Self-hosted distributed object storage is worth evaluating when your application uses an object API, you have a concrete reason to control the infrastructure or data location, and your team can operate the system throughout its life. Ceph RGW may fit organizations that want object storage alongside Ceph block or file storage; MinIO’s current AIStor documentation describes a multi-host object-storage deployment. Neither is automatically cheaper, faster, or easier than managed storage: the right choice depends on your workload, service targets, operating skills, and full lifecycle costs.
What does your application need from object storage?
Start with the application’s access pattern, not the storage platform. Object storage fits software that reads and writes objects through an object API. It is not automatically the right backend for every filesystem or database workload. Ceph documents RGW as an object gateway with S3- and Swift-compatible interfaces; check that the API behavior your application relies on is supported before committing to a design (Ceph documentation overview).
Record the workload you need to serve, including:
- Typical and maximum object sizes, and whether traffic is dominated by small objects or large sequential objects.
- Read/write mix, request rate, concurrency, peak throughput, and latency targets.
- Expected growth and how much usable capacity you need after protection overhead.
- Application compatibility requirements, including the object API features and client behavior in use.
Small-object-heavy workloads can behave differently from large-object workloads, so a generic capacity estimate or performance claim is not a substitute for tests using representative data and traffic.
When is self-hosting a sensible choice?
Self-hosting can make sense when control over hardware, data location, isolation, or integration is important enough to justify taking responsibility for the storage service. That requirement is a reason to assess self-hosting, not proof that it will cost less or be easier to run.

Before selecting a design, specify what the service must survive: drive, host, rack, network, and site failures; availability goals; and recovery time and recovery point objectives. Treat local availability and off-site disaster recovery as separate requirements. A cluster that continues through a local component failure does not, by itself, establish that you can recover after losing a site.
Also assign owners for the operational work: monitoring and alert response, capacity planning, failed-drive replacement, upgrades, security and access controls, backups or replication, and incident response. Ceph’s project documentation covers monitoring health, managing OSDs, upgrades, tuning, and disaster recovery as ongoing operations—not one-time installation tasks (Ceph documentation overview).

How do Ceph RGW, MinIO, and managed storage differ?
| Option | What the documentation indicates | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Ceph with RGW | Ceph provides object, block, and file interfaces; RGW offers S3- and Swift-compatible object access (Ceph documentation overview). | Potentially relevant if you already operate Ceph or want a shared platform for multiple storage types. Its breadth also creates more design and operational responsibilities. |
| MinIO / AIStor | Current AIStor documentation describes production distributed deployment across at least four hosts with homogeneous storage and compute resources. It prefers locally attached storage and describes clients connecting through a load balancer or equivalent network control plane (AIStor core concepts). | Assess the documented topology against your workload and deployment needs. Verify the relevant edition, lifecycle, license, and supported guidance for the implementation you plan to use. |
| Managed object storage | A provider operates the storage infrastructure and takes on hardware procurement and much of the cluster maintenance. | Compare the service’s data location, API and application compatibility, service objectives, support, portability, and expected bill with the cost and staffing of operating your own cluster. |
There is no workload-independent basis here for claiming that one option is universally faster, cheaper, or more reliable. Compare them using the same application requirements and representative tests.
What infrastructure and redundancy does self-hosting involve?
Ceph: plan beyond the minimum components
Ceph’s official FAQ describes the project as designed for commodity hardware and gives planning guidance: a default OSD memory target of 4 GiB per OSD, separate drives for the operating system and OSD data, and at least 10 Gb/s networking between hosts. For production quorum and high availability, it recommends at least three monitors and at least two managers; it also recommends at least three OSDs, or as many OSDs as object copies (Ceph FAQ). These are project recommendations, not a complete bill of materials or a sufficient production design for every workload or release.

Ceph: capacity efficiency has trade-offs
Ceph pools use replication by default. In the Ceph Squid guide’s example, a 4+2 erasure-coding profile uses 1.5 GiB of underlying storage per 1 GiB of user data, while default three-copy replication uses 3.0 GiB per 1 GiB of user data. The lower capacity overhead is not a free performance gain: erasure coding has performance trade-offs, especially with HDDs and during recovery or backfill (Ceph Squid erasure-coding guide).
Choose a protection profile based on failure assumptions and workload, not the capacity ratio alone. The Ceph guide says most erasure-coded deployments need at least k+m CRUSH failure domains and notes that RGW workloads with many small objects need careful planning (Ceph Squid erasure-coding guide).

For a managed service, estimate the bill using the same expected capacity and workload, and evaluate its service objectives, data location, compatibility, support, and portability. No universal price or workload benchmark establishes which approach costs less; the result depends on your design, usage, requirements, and operational capacity.
What should you decide before choosing a platform?
- Define the workload. Measure object sizes, request patterns, concurrency, throughput, latency needs, and growth.
- Set control and service requirements. Document data-location, isolation, retention, availability, recovery-time, and recovery-point needs.
- Map failure domains and recovery. Decide which component and site failures must be tolerated, and how an off-site copy will be restored.
- Confirm operational ownership. Name the people responsible for alerts, capacity, hardware replacement, upgrades, access controls, and incident response.
- Model cost and test candidates. Compare full lifecycle costs and run representative workload tests against the service objectives you set.
If the application requires object access and the organization has a compelling control requirement plus a team prepared to run the service, evaluate self-hosting. If the main goal is to avoid operating storage infrastructure and a managed service meets the application’s requirements, use managed storage as the baseline. Choose Ceph RGW or MinIO only after matching its deployment model, recovery design, and operational demands to your situation.
