How to Take Better Portrait Photos With an iPhone

Improve iPhone portraits by choosing better light and backgrounds, setting focus and exposure deliberately, and editing Portrait effects with restraint.

Better iPhone portraits start with three choices: put the subject in good light, focus and expose for them, and use background blur only when it helps the scene. Portrait mode can create a shallow-depth effect, but its controls and availability depend on your iPhone. Here’s a practical way to shoot, choose a look, and make careful edits.

Set up the scene before opening Portrait mode

Choose a clear subject and background

Look for a background that does not compete with the person: move away from clutter, create some space behind them, or change your shooting angle. Background blur can add separation, but it cannot fix a distracting composition. Check hair and clothing against the background so the subject remains easy to read.

Pay attention to light and expression

When a face looks dim or has harsh shadows, first try moving the subject toward softer, brighter light or changing their angle to it. Ask them to hold a comfortable expression while you make a short series of frames; then inspect the eyes and edges of hair at full size. These small adjustments can matter more than adding a stronger blur effect.

Use Portrait mode when you want background blur while composing

Portrait mode applies a depth-of-field effect intended to keep the subject sharp while blurring the foreground and background. Apple describes supported subjects as people, pets, or objects, but which subjects and controls work can vary by iPhone. Open Camera, swipe to Portrait, and wait for the camera to indicate that it is ready. If it signals that the subject is too close, too far away, or the area is too dark, adjust your position or find brighter light before taking the picture. Apple’s iPhone User Guide explains Portrait mode and its effects, while Apple’s model-support guidance covers device-specific limitations.

Pick a lighting effect for the scene

Portrait Lighting effects are creative treatments, not substitutes for suitable real-world light. Apple’s current iOS 27 guide lists these options; the set available depends on the device and software:

  • Natural: A straightforward starting point for a restrained portrait.
  • Studio: A brighter, cleaner-looking treatment.
  • Contour: More pronounced shadow and highlight.
  • Stage: A spotlight-style subject against a dark background.
  • Stage Mono: A monochrome version of the stage treatment.
  • High-Key Mono: A stylized, bright black-and-white look.

Try Natural first, then compare another effect on the same composition. If the lighting treatment distracts from the face or looks unlike the scene, choose a subtler option.

Tap to focus and adjust exposure

iPhone sets focus and exposure automatically, but you can tell it what matters in the frame. Tap the subject’s face or the area you most want sharp. If the face looks too dark or bright areas lose detail, adjust the on-screen exposure control up or down. The control’s appearance can vary by camera interface and model. Apple’s guide to camera tools for focus and exposure explains these controls.

For a sequence of frames without the camera changing its settings, touch and hold the focus area until AE/AF Lock appears. Re-tap or change the framing when you want the camera to resume adjusting automatically. Locking is useful when the subject and camera position stay consistent; it may be less suitable if your subject moves into different light.

Choose between Portrait mode and Photo mode with depth capture

Portrait mode applies the portrait treatment as you compose. On some supported iPhones, regular Photo mode can also capture depth information: when a Depth control appears, you can take the photo in Photo mode and apply a Portrait effect later in Photos. This is not available on every iPhone, so use Portrait mode if you do not see the control and want the portrait effect during capture. Apple’s Portrait guide describes the supported workflow.

Edit a portrait in Photos without overdoing it

Open an eligible portrait in Photos and tap Edit. On supported images, you can change the blur amount and Portrait Lighting effect. On iPhone 13 or later, Apple supports changing the focus point for eligible portraits. The options shown depend on the phone and the photo. Apple’s Photos editing guide outlines these controls.

Make one change at a time and check whether the face still looks natural. Too much blur can make hair, glasses, or the outline of a shoulder look unnatural; a dramatic lighting effect can also pull attention from the expression. If an edit makes the image worse, use Revert to return to the original.

Handle low light with more light or a steadier phone

Night mode is available only on supported models. When it activates, keep the iPhone still throughout the capture; movement can soften detail. If practical, move to a brighter place or add light before relying on a longer low-light capture. Apple’s Night mode guide advises holding the phone steady and notes that a tripod can capture even more detail. A phone tripod or compatible mount is optional; it can reduce camera movement, but it cannot guarantee the right focus, light direction, or expression.

Check your iPhone’s feature support

Portrait mode, Portrait Lighting, depth capture in Photo mode, focus-point editing, and Night mode are not universal iPhone features. Apple’s support pages list model-specific requirements. For example, Apple says the rear camera on iPhone XR, iPhone SE (2nd generation) and later, and iPhone 16e must detect a person’s face for Portrait mode. Confirm the instructions for your model and software before relying on a particular control; the available options can differ by device and iOS version.
