Choose the highest resolution the source actually offers if you want detail and your device can play it; choose a lower one when storage or playback capacity matters more. Then check the frame rate, codec, container, and audio compatibility for the player you plan to use. No single format or setting is best for every video and device.
Start with the source and the device
A download cannot contain more real picture detail than its source. A higher resolution label on an upscaled file does not restore detail that was never captured. Google’s VP9 guidance notes that larger frame sizes also require more bandwidth and processing power to decode, so the highest available resolution is not automatically the most practical choice.

Before downloading, consider where you will watch the file and what matters most: visible detail, smaller storage use, smooth motion, or reliable playback. A phone with limited storage and an older player may call for a different choice than a large screen and a device with current codec support.

Resolution: choose real detail, not just a bigger number
Resolution describes the dimensions of each video frame. Prefer the best resolution genuinely available when detail matters and your screen and player can handle it. If storage or decoding capacity is limited, a lower available resolution may be a better fit.

Bitrate: compare equivalent files
Bitrate is the amount of encoded data used per unit of time and affects file size. Its relationship to visible quality depends on resolution, frame rate, codec, and the material in the video. A bitrate number on its own does not establish that a file is good quality; compare options with similar resolution, frame rate, and content.
As a service-specific example, YouTube Help lists SDR 1080p upload recommendations of 8 Mbps for 24, 25, or 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 48, 50, or 60 fps. These are YouTube upload recommendations, not guarantees or targets for downloaded files. YouTube also publishes separate SDR and HDR upload recommendations, so check whether a video is HDR and whether your display supports it rather than comparing figures as if every signal were the same. YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings do not state a publication year on the page (accessed 2026).

Keep the source frame rate when possible
Frame rate affects how motion appears. For a download, retaining the source frame rate is usually the sensible default unless you have a specific playback or editing reason to change it. Converting frame rates can alter motion smoothness.
YouTube’s upload guidance says, “Content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded.” That is guidance for preparing uploads to YouTube, not a universal download-service rule. YouTube also recommends deinterlacing interlaced content for uploads. YouTube Help’s encoding recommendations are useful principles, but download options depend on the source and service.

Check the codec and container, not only the extension
A container packages video and audio streams; a codec encodes the video or audio inside. MP4 and WebM are containers. H.264, VP9, HEVC/H.265, and AV1 are video codecs. A filename ending in .mp4 does not by itself tell you which codec is inside or guarantee that your player supports it.
Compatibility depends on the codec-and-container combination, as well as the device’s software, version, and support for the file’s profile, resolution, or HDR mode. If a service offers several formats, check the target player’s supported media formats before choosing a newer or less common codec. Android’s official support table, for example, lists support that varies by codec, container, and platform version; it says AV1 decoding is supported from Android 10, and AV1 encoder and decoder support is mandatory beginning with Android 14. Those platform statements do not establish support on every handset or on other operating systems. Android’s supported media formats.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use this checklist when options are available
- Source detail: Does the source genuinely offer the resolution you want?
- Storage: Is the estimated file size reasonable for your available space?
- Motion: Does the offered frame rate suit the video and preserve its source motion?
- Playback: Does your device and app decode the codec at the offered resolution and, where relevant, HDR mode?
- Packaging and sound: Does the player support the container and audio stream as well as the video codec?
If your goal is preparing a video to upload to YouTube rather than downloading one, YouTube’s guidance recommends MP4, H.264 video, progressive scan, and AAC-LC or Opus audio; it also recommends placing the MP4 moov atom at the front for Fast Start. Those recommendations describe YouTube uploads, not a universal best download format. YouTube Help.
