Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A 2.4 GHz-only device can join a Wi-Fi network even if your phone uses 5 GHz—provided your router broadcasts 2.4 GHz and the device’s setup app allows the phone and device to use different bands. Check the device’s requirements, start pairing in its official app, and move the phone to 2.4 GHz only if the app specifically requires it.
Before you start: check the device and router
- Check the device requirements. Confirm that the device supports 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, and note any required security mode or pairing method. Use the manual or support page for your exact model; requirements vary.
- Confirm the router broadcasts 2.4 GHz. In its settings, look for a 2.4 GHz radio, Wi-Fi band, Smart Connect, band steering, or an IoT network. Menu names and controls vary by router. A single network name (SSID) does not mean 2.4 GHz is unavailable: routers can use one name for multiple bands and steer devices to different ones. Google describes this behavior for Nest Wifi, Nest Wifi Pro, and Google Wifi (Google Nest Wi-Fi band information).
- Have the correct Wi-Fi password ready. Avoid guest networks or networks with a sign-in page for initial setup; some devices cannot complete pairing on them.
Connect the device
- Put the device in pairing mode. Follow its maker’s instructions and keep it powered on. Place it near the router during setup.
- Open the device maker’s official app and follow its setup flow. Start with your usual Wi-Fi network and enter its password carefully.
- Use 2.4 GHz on the phone only if the app requires it. If your router exposes separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names, join the 2.4 GHz one temporarily. Otherwise, use the router’s documented setup control if it has one. Some mesh systems choose the phone’s band automatically; Google suggests moving farther from the router as a possible way to prompt a phone to use 2.4 GHz when manual selection is unavailable (Google Nest Wi-Fi band information). Restore temporary router changes afterward.
- Grant the app the access it needs. Turn on Bluetooth if the setup flow uses it. On iPhone or iPad, allow the app to access the local network if prompted. Make sure the phone is connected to the intended Wi-Fi network. Google’s setup guidance covers these app and network checks (Google device setup troubleshooting).
Troubleshoot based on what happens
The device cannot see the Wi-Fi network
- Check that the router’s 2.4 GHz band is enabled.
- If the network name is hidden, enter it manually if the device’s app offers that option.
- Move the device closer to the router and check its model-specific network requirements.
The app says the phone must use 2.4 GHz
Connect the phone to a separate 2.4 GHz network name if available, or use the router’s supported temporary setup mode. A shared network name can still broadcast 2.4 GHz, but some setup flows may require the phone itself to join that band. Google notes this can be necessary for some smart-home devices (Google Nest Wi-Fi band information).

The app finds the device but setup will not finish
- Recheck the Wi-Fi name and password, device power, and pairing mode.
- Confirm Bluetooth and local-network permissions if the app uses them, and check that the phone is on the intended network.
- Restart the app, device, or router only as directed by the device maker’s support instructions. Google lists power, app, and network checks among its setup troubleshooting steps (Google device setup troubleshooting).
Setup finishes, but the app cannot find or control the device
Check whether the device or phone is on a guest network, and review the router’s client or access-point isolation settings. These can prevent devices on Wi-Fi from communicating with one another. Google identifies client isolation and guest mode as possible setup or communication blockers (Google Wi-Fi network requirements; Google guest network information).
The connection works near the router but not in the device’s final location
Treat this as a coverage problem, not a band-selection problem. Try moving the router or device closer first. If you cannot reduce the distance and the signal remains weak, an extender may help; it will not correct a password error, unsupported security mode, app permissions, or client isolation. Google recommends trying a closer router or device position before considering an extender (Google Wi-Fi coverage guidance).
#1 Best Overall
- Wifi 6 High-speed Transmission: The WiFi adapter supports the new generation of WiFi6 technology with transmission speeds of up to 600 Mbps on 5 GHz + 287 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, enabling lightning-fast transmission of video at ultra-high speed and low latency
- Dual-band Connection: The AX900 USB WiFi adapter under the AX standard, the 5G band rate can reach 600Mbps, and the 2.4G band can reach 286Mbps. Note: Use WiFi 6 Router to achieve AX900 speed
- Built-in Drivers for Windows 10/11: The WiFi Adapter for Desktop PC just supports Windows 10/11 which CPU architecture is X86/X64, supports CD-free installation, no need to download drivers, saving time and worry. Please note this Adapter doesn't support MacOS/Linux/Win 8, 8.1, 7, XP
- Receive & Transmit Two in One: A desktop computer can connect to the WiFi wireless Internet by connecting it to a wireless network card. A networked computer can connect to the network card to transmit WiFi and share it with other devices
- Stay Safe Online: The wifi dongle supports WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK, WPA/WPA2 mixed encryption modes. Note: Make sure that the distance between the adapter and router should be within 30ft
Change security settings only for a documented compatibility issue
Do not turn off Wi-Fi security or make a broad router change just because pairing failed. Follow the device maker’s requirements for your model. For compatible older devices, Apple documents WPA2/WPA3 Transitional as a way to support WPA2 Personal (AES) clients alongside WPA3-capable ones (Apple recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points). TP-Link’s Deco guidance describes a WPA2-PSK-only setting for its particular IoT compatibility case; that is not a universal recommendation for other routers or devices (TP-Link Deco IoT network guidance).
