A match means the information appears in the service’s available breach data; it does not, by itself, mean someone currently controls your account. If a password is flagged, change it everywhere you reused it and turn on two-factor authentication where available.
Check whether your email address appears in breach data
- Open Have I Been Pwned.
- Enter your email address in the breach search and review any listed breaches and exposed data categories.
The result tells you whether the address appears in breach records available to the service. It does not reveal the password associated with an address, or establish that anyone has accessed your account. Have I Been Pwned notes that sensitive or retired breaches may not appear in ordinary on-demand searches, so a clean result is not proof that your address was never exposed.

Check whether a password has appeared in known breach data
Use Have I Been Pwned’s Pwned Passwords to check an individual password. This is a separate check from the email-address search: Have I Been Pwned says its email results do not include corresponding passwords. It cannot tell you which password was paired with your address in a particular breach.

If you are checking a password you still use, treat a match as a reason to replace it. Avoid entering a current password into a service you do not trust; using the password check in your password manager, where supported, is another option.

Check passwords saved in Google Password Manager
If you use Google Password Manager, run Password Checkup to review saved passwords for exposure, weakness, and reuse. Google also provides password warnings in Chrome. If you receive a warning, go directly to Password Checkup to confirm it and change unsafe passwords rather than relying on the warning alone.
Google says Chrome encrypts saved credentials before comparing them with breach data, but its checked breach list may be incomplete. A clean check is therefore not a guarantee that every saved password is safe.

- Requires 3 "AAA" batteries (included)
- Unit auto-locks for 30 minutes after 5 consecutive incorrect PINs
What a result can—and cannot—tell you
- Email-address match: The address appears in breach data the service can show. It does not show that the account is presently compromised.
- Password match: The password appears in known breached-password data. It does not identify which account or email address used it.
- No match: The information was not found in the data available to that particular service. Neither result proves that no exposure has occurred.
Look for separate signs of account access, such as unfamiliar activity or changes to account settings. A breach listing alone is not evidence of current control by someone else.

- Change it on the affected service. Use that service’s official site or app, not a link in an unexpected message.
- Replace it anywhere else you reused it. Each account should have its own password. Google Account Help likewise recommends a unique password for every account.
- Use a password manager if useful. It can generate and store a different strong password for each account.
- Enable two-factor authentication. Turn it on wherever the service offers it. A physical security key is one optional sign-in method, not a requirement for checking exposure.
If you suspect someone has accessed an account
Change the password, sign out other devices if the service allows it, and review recent activity and recovery information. Check that recovery email addresses and phone numbers are yours, and inspect email forwarding rules for changes you did not make.

Prioritize your email account if it may be compromised: password-reset links for other services often arrive there. The FTC advises protecting email with a strong password and two-factor authentication. Once the mailbox is secure, use it to reset passwords on other affected accounts.
