Is Samsung Notes Backed Up? What Sync and Restore Actually Protect

Samsung Notes saves notes locally and can sync them through Samsung Cloud when enabled. Learn what sync protects, how to export a separate copy, and what restore can—and cannot—guarantee.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Samsung Notes saves notes in the app automatically, but that does not mean every note is also stored in a separate, recoverable cloud archive. Samsung Cloud can sync notes across devices when enabled and signed in to the same Samsung account; synced edits and deletions carry across devices. For an extra copy, export individual notes to files such as PDF or Word.

What “backed up” means for Samsung Notes

There are three different protections to distinguish:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Automatic in-app saving: Notes are saved in Samsung Notes on the device.
  • Samsung Cloud sync: When enabled, notes are matched across supported devices signed in to the same Samsung account. This is useful for access across devices, but it mirrors changes rather than keeping an independent history.
  • Device backup or exported file: Samsung Cloud offers device backup and restore controls, while Samsung Notes lets you save individual notes as files. Device-backup categories vary, so check what your phone actually lists; do not assume every Notes item is included.

Samsung’s sync guidance explains that changes to a synced note are reflected on other devices. For a separate copy you can keep outside the synced Notes view, export the note as a file.

How to check or turn on Samsung Cloud sync

  1. Open Samsung Notes on your phone or tablet.
  2. Tap the three-line Menu, then open Settings.
  3. Select Sync with Samsung Cloud, grant any requested permissions, and turn on the sync switch.
  4. Choose whether syncing may use Wi-Fi only or Wi-Fi and mobile data, if that choice is shown.
  5. Confirm that the device is signed in to the Samsung account you use on your other devices. To start a sync immediately, use Sync Now if available.

Samsung’s Notes instructions and Samsung Cloud sync guidance describe these controls. Menu names and paths can differ by device, software version, and country; if the route is different, look in Samsung Notes settings and your device’s Samsung Cloud settings.

Sync, device backup, and file export compared

Method Best for What happens to edits and deletions? How you retrieve notes
Samsung Cloud sync Keeping notes available in Samsung Notes on supported devices Changes and deletions are mirrored to other synced devices on the account. Open Samsung Notes on a compatible device signed in to the account.
Samsung Cloud device backup and restore Restoring device data during setup or from backup settings Whether Notes data is included depends on the categories available for the device and service. Use restore during device setup or through the backup and restore controls.
Manual note export Keeping a separate copy of an individual note The exported file does not automatically update when the note changes; Samsung’s cited instructions do not describe version history. Open the saved file in a compatible app or location.

How to export a note as a separate file

  1. Open the note in Samsung Notes.
  2. Tap More options (the three vertical dots).
  3. Choose Save as file.
  4. Select an available format: PDF, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, image, or text, then complete the save flow.

Samsung also lists sharing as an option for Samsung Notes files and common formats. These are per-note export or sharing choices; Samsung’s instructions do not promise that every format retains every Notes feature. Its Notes guide also says imported PDFs can be annotated, but cannot be edited as ordinary note text.

Can you restore or download synced Notes from the web?

Samsung says individual synced files cannot be downloaded from the Samsung Cloud web portal. To access synced Notes data, use Samsung Notes on a compatible phone or tablet. Device restore is a separate process: Samsung places backup and restore controls under Settings > Accounts and backup, with labels and availability varying by device, carrier, and country. You can also restore during new-device setup. See Samsung’s backup and restore instructions.

Samsung Canada’s Cloud access page says data unused for more than 12 months may be deleted after advance notice, and that deleted data cannot be recovered. That is guidance from Samsung Canada; check current notices and local terms rather than treating it as a universal retention policy.

What if a note was deleted or changed?

If the note was synced, a deletion or edit on one device can propagate to the other devices using that Samsung account. Sync is therefore not a reliable historical-version archive. If you already exported a separate copy before the change, use that file; otherwise, check the available restore categories on your device and any relevant Samsung account notices. Samsung’s published guidance does not establish that every note can be recovered after a synced deletion.

Is Samsung Notes still syncing with OneNote?

Samsung Support US currently says that syncing Samsung Notes with Microsoft OneNote is no longer available, and specifically notes it is unavailable on One UI 9. Older Samsung how-to pages may still describe OneNote folders or an Outlook feed, but they should not be taken as confirmation that the feature remains available. Samsung recommends Samsung Cloud instead. See the current US troubleshooting page.

One important Galaxy AI PDF exception

Samsung’s US Notes guidance says PDF overlay translations created with Galaxy AI cannot be saved in their original translated state and do not support sync, sharing, or backup/restore in that translated state. This exception is specific to those translated overlays; it is not a general restriction on ordinary notes or PDFs.

Quick checklist

  • Verify Samsung Cloud sync is enabled in Samsung Notes and that the correct Samsung account is signed in.
  • Export especially important notes as separate files if you want a copy that does not simply mirror synced changes.
  • Before relying on device restore, inspect the backup categories shown on your own device.
  • Use a compatible device and Samsung Notes to access synced notes; the Cloud web portal does not provide individual synced-note downloads.
