Instagram says Search matches the words people type with text in usernames, bios, captions, hashtags and places. If your profile and captions do not clearly describe what you offer, your posts may be less relevant to a matching search. That does not make captions a ranking switch: Instagram also considers each searcher’s activity and information about potential results.
How Instagram Search works
In an explanation published on August 25, 2021, Instagram described three main groups of Search signals, in this order: the search text, the searcher’s activity, and information about potential results. Its example is a person searching for “space”: Instagram tries to match that term with relevant account and post text.

Instagram said search text is matched against usernames, bios, captions, hashtags and places. Search is also personalized. Activity can include accounts a person follows, posts they view and their past interactions. Information about possible results can include how popular they are, indicated by clicks, likes, shares and follows. Instagram’s explanation describes these signals, but does not publish a ranking formula or say how much weight each receives.

Use plain, accurate words that describe what is actually shown or offered. If a post features a particular service, product, subject or place, name it naturally in the caption. A person searching “how Instagram Search works” or “keywords and hashtags in the caption” is more likely to find a clearly described post than one whose text says little about its subject.

Instagram Head Adam Mosseri’s guidance was: “For a post to be found in Search, put keywords and hashtags in the caption, not the comments.” In other words, do not rely on placing those terms only in a comment. Instagram recommends relevant keywords and hashtags; it does not recommend stuffing captions with unrelated or repetitive phrases.
Make a local business’s location clear
If your business serves a defined area, make the relevant location clear in your bio. Instagram specifically says a relevant location in the bio can help people find an account. Keep the location accurate to the business or service area rather than adding places that do not apply.

Use these checks before publishing
- Relevance: Does the caption use words that genuinely fit the post?
- Clarity: Can a reader tell what the product, service or subject is from the caption?
- Placement: Are the relevant keywords or hashtags in the caption rather than only in comments?
- Local context: If the business serves a specific area, is that location clear in the bio?
These are practical checks based on Instagram’s published guidance, not a scoring system or a promise of better placement.
What caption keywords can—and cannot—do
Clear wording can help Instagram match a post or account to relevant search text, but it cannot guarantee that the result will rank highly, be seen, generate leads or lead to a sale. A searcher’s activity and the popularity information Instagram considers also affect what appears. The published explanation gives no performance estimate, recommended number of keywords or hashtags, or measured business outcome.

The guidance concerns Search. It does not establish that one caption tactic controls distribution in Feed, Stories or Explore. Instagram’s August 25, 2021 explanation is a primary source for what the platform said at that time, not confirmation that its system or recommendations remain unchanged in 2026: Instagram’s explanation of how Search works.
