Ryoku Linux can work for a beginner who wants a ready-to-use desktop and is comfortable learning some troubleshooting, but it is not the safest pick for someone who needs a mature, low-maintenance system or guaranteed help. It is an Arch-based distribution with a guided installer and a preconfigured desktop, but the project labels it a public beta and says it is maintained as a spare-time community project.
What Ryoku Linux offers beginners
Ryoku is a complete Linux distribution, not just a desktop theme: it is based on Arch Linux and includes a guided installer, a Wayland desktop using Hyprland or niri, and project-provided system tools. The project describes the software as free and open source. Its goal of getting users to a usable desktop from first boot may reduce the amount of setup compared with installing a bare Arch system, though it does not guarantee that every newcomer will find the experience simple. See the Ryoku homepage and upstream repository for current project details.
The homepage currently identifies Ryoku as a public beta. That makes it a more plausible choice for a curious beginner willing to encounter rough edges than for someone who prioritizes predictable behavior and long-term stability above all else. Beta status and release information can change; check the project’s current release notes and documentation before installing.
Check your computer before installing
Ryoku’s published requirements are for x86-64 computers that boot in UEFI mode. Secure Boot must be disabled unless you have enrolled your own keys. The project lists these specifications in its requirements table:

#1 Best Overall
- Intel Core i5-1335U Processor (12M Cache, 12 Threads, up to 4.6 GHz) - 256GB Solid State Drive - 16GB DDR4 SDRAM
- 15.6" FHD (1920x1080) Non-Touch Anti-Glare Display - Intel UHD 620 Integrated Graphics - Stereo Speakers
- 720p HD Webcam with Privacy Shutter. Integrated Microphone - Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC (2x2) 8265, Bluetooth Version 4.2
- I/O Ports: 2x USB 3.0, 1x USB 3.1 Type-C 3.1, Headphone/Mic Combo Port, 4-in-1 Card Reader, HDMI, Kensington Mini-Lock Slot
- Linux Mint (Cinnamon) 64-Bit - Keyboard with Full NumberPad - Fast Charging
| Category | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | 64-bit x86-64 dual-core CPU | Quad-core CPU or better |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM | 8 GB RAM generally; 16 GB for development toolchains |
| Graphics | Graphics hardware with working KMS and OpenGL or Vulkan support | Recent integrated or discrete GPU |
| Storage | 32 GB | 64 GB or larger SSD |
| Firmware | UEFI with Secure Boot off | UEFI with Secure Boot off |
The homepage separately describes 16 GB as comfortable, while the repository recommends 8 GB for general use and 16 GB when using development toolchains. These are different levels of guidance, not a single universal memory threshold.
Plan for the disk layout
For an alongside installation, Ryoku’s hardware documentation gives a floor of a 2 GiB boot partition and a 20 GiB root partition; swap space adds to the required capacity. If you are dual-booting with Windows, the project recommends shrinking the Windows partition from Windows itself before starting. A dirty or hibernated NTFS volume can prevent installation. Review the installation hardware documentation and back up important files before changing partitions.

Check firmware and device-specific notes
The installation documentation includes troubleshooting guidance for Intel VMD/RST storage, NVIDIA graphics, Secure Boot, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. Those notes are reasons to verify your own hardware and firmware settings in advance; they do not mean that every device in those categories will fail. If you rely on a particular wireless adapter or graphics setup, look for its relevant instructions before committing your main computer to the installation.
Installation and day-to-day maintenance
The standard beginner route is to boot the project’s signed ISO and follow its guided installer, which handles disk partitioning, installs the desktop, and reboots into Ryoku. There is also an in-place conversion route for existing Arch installations, but that is a separate path rather than the normal first-install option. The project describes both the ISO and package repository as signed and provides verification instructions; consult its FAQ for current installation guidance.

For updates, the documented ryoku update command takes a snapshot and updates from the signed repository. If an update causes problems, ryoku rollback restores the prior state. This gives users a documented recovery route, but it is not a promise that updates are automatic, trouble-free, or released on a particular schedule. Check the FAQ for current command details and usage.
Support and maturity: what to expect
Ryoku’s public-beta status means beginners should expect active development rather than assume the stability commitments associated with a long-term-support distribution. Its GitHub organization describes the project as community-first and led in spare time. It also states: “Community-first means listening and working together—not promising that every request will be included or that support is available around the clock.” The statement is published by the Ryoku project organization, not attributed to a named individual.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should choose Ryoku?
- A reasonable fit: You want a complete desktop without building an Arch system from scratch, meet the published hardware requirements, and are willing to consult documentation or troubleshoot if needed.
- A cautious fit: You are new to Linux but have a spare computer, can recover or reinstall if something goes wrong, and want to learn while trying a beta project.
- A weaker fit: This is a computer you depend on for work, you need highly predictable updates, or you expect guaranteed, around-the-clock technical support.
When comparing Ryoku with another distribution, weigh the project’s beta maturity, how much is preconfigured, your hardware and firmware compatibility, the effort involved in disk setup, its snapshot-and-rollback workflow, and the support commitment you can actually rely on. Ryoku’s published details let you assess those points on its side; they do not establish how it compares with any particular alternative.
