Restart if Android asks. The available controls vary by device, and the Android 16 app-check page shows which apps queried Device protection—not a live checklist of every protection.
Turn on Device protection
- Set a screen lock. Use a PIN, pattern, or password if you do not already have one. Google requires a screen lock before you can enable Advanced Protection. Google’s Android Help explains the requirement.
- Open Advanced Protection. The usual route is Settings > Security & Privacy > Other settings > Advanced Protection. On some devices, use Settings > Google > All services > Personal and device safety > Advanced Protection. Menu names can differ by manufacturer and Android build. Google’s setup instructions document the routes.
- Switch on Device protection. This is the phone-level control. Do not confuse it with the separate Account protection enrollment described below.
- Choose whether to enable Intrusion Logging. It is optional. If you enable it, select the Google Account for encrypted log backups; understand the privacy and retention details before opting in.
- Tap Turn on and restart if prompted. Some protections require a reboot. If you defer it, return to Advanced Protection and select Restart now.
What Device protection covers
Device protection acts as a control point for several app, device-safety, and web protections. While it is enabled, it can prevent users or malicious apps from turning off covered settings individually. The features below are Google’s documented categories; availability and implementation depend on the device, supported software, and, in some cases, region.

Apps
- Google Play Protect scans apps and devices and cannot be turned off while Device protection is enabled.
- Installation and updates for apps from unknown sources can be blocked.
- Memory Tagging Extension applies to supported apps and may affect performance.
- Accessibility services are restricted to verified tools.
Device safety
- Google lists Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, Failed Authentication Lock, and a restriction on Watch Unlock.
- Inactivity Reboot restarts the phone if it remains locked for 72 hours. This is Google’s stated feature threshold, not a guarantee that every device supports the feature.
- USB Protection is documented for Pixel 6 and later; see the limitations below.
- Automatic Call Screen is listed for supported regions.
Web and browser
- Android Safe Browsing and HTTPS enforcement in Chrome when possible.
- Chrome’s JavaScript optimizer and WebGPU are disabled under the documented protection set.
Check which apps queried Device protection
On Android 16, open Settings > Security & Privacy > Advanced Protection, scroll to the bottom, and select Apps that checked for Device protection. This page lists apps that can check the Device protection status. It does not report the on/off state of each underlying safeguard, so it should not be treated as a comprehensive security dashboard. Google’s Android Help describes this Android 16 entry.

For a practical check, confirm that the Device protection control is on and that you have completed any requested restart. A restart prompt can mean some protections have not taken effect yet. Feature availability varies, so a single toggle does not establish that every listed protection is operating on every phone. If you remove the screen lock after enabling the mode, Google says Advanced Protection remains active, but some protections might not work optimally and a warning appears.

Device protection and Google Account Advanced Protection are different
| Option | What it protects | How it is enabled | What changes for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Device protection | Phone-level app, device-safety, and web controls | Turn on the Device protection toggle in Android Settings | Covered device settings may be prevented from being disabled individually |
| Google Account Advanced Protection | Google Account sign-in and access to sensitive account data | Enroll separately through the Account protection option | Sign-in on a new device requires a passkey or security key; some third-party app access is restricted, and account recovery has additional steps |
Account enrollment can use passkeys or security keys. A compatible security key is optional for that account program; it is not required to switch on Device protection. Google describes the account program’s requirements and effects in its Advanced Protection Program Help.
Decide whether Intrusion Logging is right for you
Intrusion Logging is an optional investigation feature. It can record app activity and installations, network events such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth activity, DNS lookups and IP addresses, USB file transfers, system certificate changes, and device lock and unlock events. Google says logs stored on its servers are protected with device-generated end-to-end encryption; your account password and screen-lock credentials protect the encryption keys. Google’s Intrusion Logging Help describes what is recorded and how it is protected.

- You can download and decrypt logs. After decryption, securing the files is your responsibility.
- System-level logging does not exclude Chrome Incognito network events. Someone with access to a log may infer sites visited, though not the specific pages.
USB Protection: supported devices and behavior
Google documents USB Protection for Pixel 6 and later. When enabled, it blocks new USB data connections while the screen is locked, but charging continues. A data connection established while the phone was unlocked may remain active after you lock it, and behavior can differ with manufacturer implementation. See Google’s USB Protection instructions for the Pixel-specific details.
