Is Razer Synapse Spyware? What Razer’s Disclosures Actually Show

Razer Synapse collects documented usage and device data and can receive broad support logs, but the evidence reviewed does not establish covert spyware behavior in Synapse 4.

Based on the evidence currently available, Razer Synapse cannot be labeled spyware as a settled fact, and it cannot be called harmless either. Razer documents that Synapse and its linked accounts collect usage and device information, that some features depend on the cloud, and that support-log submissions can carry system and application data. Those disclosed practices deserve privacy scrutiny. Nothing reviewed shows that current Synapse 4 secretly records general keystrokes or transmits data Razer has not disclosed, and no independent technical audit or reproducible network test of the current version was found.

What “spyware” means in this question

Spyware is not a single technical category with an official test. The most useful working definition comes from the Android Open Source Project’s privacy guidance, last updated 2026-09-30 UTC:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

“Spyware is defined as software that aims to gather information about a user or device without their knowledge, that might send user information to another entity without consent.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That is a general Android guideline, not a ruling on Razer. Applied to Synapse, the question has two parts: does the software gather information in ways users are not told about, and does it send information elsewhere without consent? Disclosed collection speaks only to the first part. The second requires evidence of what actually leaves the machine. The same guidance lists undisclosed transmission of sensitive material such as web history, passwords or OAuth tokens among behaviors that may meet its spyware examples. The sources reviewed do not show Synapse doing that.

What Razer discloses, category by category

The table separates Razer’s documented practices from the conclusions they do not support. Two caveats apply to every row. Razer’s customer privacy policy is a company-wide document, not a Synapse data map. The Singapore software terms were captured roughly a year or more before this article was prepared and are regional, so check the version that matches your installed software and your location.

Practice What Razer’s documents say What they do not establish
Razer account and product usage Razer’s Customer Privacy Policy says it may collect information about activity while using its hardware or software and while logged into a Razer ID account. Device information listed includes operating system, software applications, IP address, geolocation and security status. Stated purposes include product development, service operation, understanding usage patterns and relevant marketing. A Synapse-specific telemetry inventory, or proof of what is sent during any given session.
Synapse online configuration Razer’s Singapore software terms say that in online mode Synapse collects warranty registration details, device type and serial number, operating system, configuration profiles (keybinds, Chroma lighting, macros, power and device performance settings), installed games, and Synapse app-usage information. Independent confirmation of what every current build sends, or how that data is used beyond the terms.
Synapse offline mode The same terms say that while the user stays offline, Synapse stores the listed data locally and does not upload it to Razer’s cloud. That nothing was synced before the machine went offline, or that other Razer services stop communicating.
Synapse 2.0 keystroke statistics The same terms describe an optional mouse-usage statistics feature that collects keystrokes, mouse clicks, wheel rotations and pointer distance, and say it can be switched on or off in Synapse. That Synapse 4 records general typing. The statement concerns Synapse 2.0.
Support log bundles Razer’s Synapse Log Collector terms describe system and application data, state and event logs, error and debugging information, and pseudonymized identifiers such as Razer ID or session ID. That any particular archive contains only these items, or that the security measures described are effective.

Razer’s policy does disclose collecting activity while the software is in use, which is why a claim of app-level monitoring is plausible on its face. Disclosed collection is still not the same as the granular, covert monitoring that the spyware definition describes.

Offline use and what it does not protect

Offline behavior is the most practical question for a privacy-minded user, and the answer is conditional. The Singapore terms describe local-only storage while offline, as noted above. A Razer Support FAQ for Synapse 4, which can be found at this support page, appears in search results as saying the software can work without an internet connection after a previous Razer ID login. That page could not be opened directly when this article was prepared, so treat the statement as a search-result summary rather than verified guidance.

  • The offline description ties the behavior to a prior login. It does not describe a fresh installation, and it should not be read as covering one.
  • Cloud synchronization and account services may not work offline, so some features will be unavailable.
  • Blocking network access is not a tested or documented way to stop all data handling. The sources do not show that it preserves every Synapse feature, so do not treat it as a privacy control without testing it yourself.

Support logs: what goes in them and how to submit one

Support logs are the clearest case where a user hands over data on purpose, and the category most likely to contain material beyond the technical issue. Razer’s Log Collector terms, last modified 2025-06-24, set the rules:

  1. Confirm the request. Razer’s terms say submission is for a requested support purpose and that you can refuse. Razer adds that declining may limit its ability to assess or resolve the problem.
  2. Inspect the archive before uploading it, if your setup lets you. The documented categories are system and application data, state and event logs, error and debugging information, and pseudonymized identifiers such as Razer ID or session ID.
  3. Remove or redact anything unrelated to the fault. Razer’s instruction reads: “When uploading log files, please ensure you remove or redact any personal data not relevant to the technical issue.” [Razer Synapse Log Collector terms]
  4. Know the retention period. Razer says received files are kept for no longer than six months after the ticket is closed, subject to legal exceptions, and that access is limited to authorized support personnel. These are policy statements. They do not verify a specific archive or the security measures behind it.

The December 2025 Reddit allegations

A post in r/privacy dated December 7, 2025, available here, alleges that Razer tracks app interactions at very fine granularity and that a support-log archive exposed app activity, authentication tokens and a system inventory. It is one user’s account. No independent reproduction of it was found.

Parts of the post overlap with Razer’s documents. The log terms do say bundles can include system, application and event data, and they do ask users to strip personal information. But authentication tokens are not among the log categories Razer lists, so that claim goes beyond the disclosed terms rather than matching them. Nothing in the documents confirms the fine-grained monitoring alleged either.

What would change the verdict

  • An independent network analysis or audit of a current Synapse 4 build, showing what is sent, where it goes, and under which settings.
  • A Razer statement that specifically inventories Synapse 4 telemetry, including whether keystrokes are involved in any feature and which optional features are enabled by default.
  • Reproducible evidence about the contents of a support archive, from a source other than the original post.

If you use Synapse now

  • Check whether your version offers the optional statistics switch described in the Synapse 2.0 terms, and confirm the setting exists and what it controls before assuming it is off.
  • Treat cloud-linked features and Razer ID sign-in as data-sharing choices. Use them only where the convenience justifies what the disclosures describe.
