Two are do-it-yourself hardware concepts built on ESPHome, one is a software path that reads vehicle data through an OBD-II adapter and a phone, and one is an interface that puts selected Home Assistant controls on a car’s screen through Android Auto or Android Automotive. Treat each as a project for a parked car, not a finished automotive accessory.
Comparing the four options at a glance
| Option | What it gives you | Hardware or prerequisites | Setup effort | Still unverified for your car |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ESPHome microcontroller as a sensor or switch | Custom readings or controls exposed to Home Assistant | A supported microcontroller (ESPHome’s site lists ESP32 development boards among its options) plus your own sensors or relays | High: choose the board, wire it, and write the configuration | Automotive power, heat, vibration, and suitability of the board for the cabin |
| ESPHome GPS module | Latitude and longitude, plus speed, course, and altitude where the module supplies them | An NMEA-compatible GPS module and a supported ESPHome board | High: DIY wiring and configuration | GPS accuracy for your specific module and mounting method |
| OBD-II adapter with phone-based Home Assistant integration | Vehicle data such as speed, fuel, temperatures, battery voltage, diagnostics, and tire-pressure data, plus phone GPS | A Bluetooth or Wi-Fi ELM327 OBD-II adapter, a compatible phone, and the Car 2 Home app | Moderate: pair the adapter and set up the app and integration | Which signals your vehicle reports, and whether your specific adapter works |
| Home Assistant in-car interface | Controls and status for selected entities on Android Auto or Android Automotive | A compatible phone or vehicle running the Home Assistant Companion app | Low to moderate: enable the feature and choose entities | Which entities your particular car or head unit displays |
Can I connect my car to Home Assistant?
Yes, but “connect” means something different for each option. The four reach different layers: custom hardware sensing (option 1), location data (option 2), the car’s own diagnostic data (option 3), and an in-car control surface (option 4). Most readers need only one of these. Combining them is possible, but it multiplies wiring, power, and networking problems, so start with the single layer that matches your goal.

The four options
1. ESPHome microcontroller as a custom sensor or switch
ESPHome builds firmware from a YAML configuration that describes a microcontroller and the hardware attached to it. Its documentation says the platform supports configurable sensors, switches, displays, and related peripherals, and that Home Assistant integrates with them through ESPHome’s native API. The project’s Getting Started documentation puts it this way: “ESPHome turns common microcontrollers into smart home devices without writing any C++.”
In a car, this makes the microcontroller the basis for a custom reading or control, such as a cabin temperature probe or an indicator light you switch from Home Assistant. You choose the board, select the sensors, and wire everything yourself. A development board is a bench component, not a car-grade unit, so use this route for non-critical monitoring or experiments and never as a safety system.

2. ESPHome GPS module
ESPHome’s GPS component works with modules that use NMEA, a standardized GPS data protocol. The documentation covers latitude and longitude and also supports speed, course, and altitude sensors. That makes it a reasonable project for logging a drive or feeding a custom dashboard, provided the module has a suitable power source and network connection.
It is a component you assemble, not a finished tracker. The documentation does not establish accuracy for any particular module, and it says nothing about mounting in a vehicle. Do not treat it as an anti-theft or recovery device.

3. OBD-II adapter with a phone-based Home Assistant integration
The Car 2 Home integration repository describes a mobile app that reads a vehicle’s OBD-II port through a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi ELM327 adapter, combines that stream with phone GPS and related information, and sends the data to Home Assistant. The project lists sensors for speed, fuel, temperatures, battery voltage, diagnostics, and tire-pressure data. These are the project’s own claims. No independent test or per-model compatibility list accompanies them, and the repository does not guarantee that every car reports every value.

4. Home Assistant in-car interface on Android Auto or Android Automotive
The Home Assistant Companion documentation describes access to selected entities through Android Auto and Android Automotive OS. Actionable domains include lights, switches, scripts, fans, covers, and locks, and sensor entities can also be displayed. The vehicle limits how many entities it shows, so choose a short list in advance.
This is software rather than a device to buy, and it depends on a compatible phone or vehicle. Set it up while parked, and keep it to simple controls and readouts.

Can ESPHome track a car’s location?
It can supply coordinates from a GPS module, but how Home Assistant interprets that position matters. Home Assistant device trackers fall into two broad kinds. Position trackers report coordinates when exact location is available, and those coordinates can drive zone automations. Connection trackers instead indicate that a phone or device is connected to a Wi-Fi network or Bluetooth, which reflects presence rather than a continuous location on the road. A Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection tracker is therefore not the same as GPS tracking, and only a position source gives you coordinates for zone-based automations.
What OBD-II adapter works with Home Assistant?
No specific adapter model or vehicle list is confirmed for this integration. The documented path is a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi ELM327 adapter, so start with that category and verify four things before buying:
Quick Recap
Best Value
- High-Speed Charging: Connect to the USB-C port to charge an iPhone 14 Pro to 50% in just 25 minutes, or a Samsung S23 in just 27 minutes.
- Charge 2 Devices at Once: The USB-C port offers 30W max charging while the USB-A port delivers up to 22.5W, so you can charge 2 devices simultaneously and at high speed.
- Wide Compatibility: From iPhone to Samsung to USB-C tablets and more, Anker's signature PowerIQ 3.0 technology provides flawless compatibility with virtually any mobile device.
- ActiveShield 2.0: Anker's proprietary technology enhances protection by intelligently monitoring temperature and adjusting power output to safeguard your connected devices.
- What You Get: Anker 323 Car Charger (52.5W), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Vehicle: the car needs a standard OBD-II port and must expose the signals you want. Some values will be missing on some models.
- Phone: confirm the app’s supported operating systems, and make sure your phone’s Bluetooth or Wi-Fi setup matches the adapter type you choose.
- Adapter protocol: confirm the adapter is ELM327-compatible and works with the app’s connection mode.
- Power behavior: check whether the adapter draws power whenever the port is live and whether it stays connected when the engine is off.
Choosing by goal
- Cabin sensor or custom indicator: start with option 1 on a development board for bench work. Move to hardware suited to the vehicle only after you have verified it.
- Route logging or a custom dashboard: option 2 provides coordinates and speed, but expect DIY configuration.
- Engine or battery data in Home Assistant: option 3 is the most direct path, provided your car and phone are compatible.
- Simple dashboard buttons on the car’s screen: option 4 needs the least hardware, but only if your phone or car supports Android Auto or Android Automotive.
Limits to respect before you install anything
- The ESPHome, Home Assistant, and Car 2 Home documentation describes software behavior. None of it certifies the hardware for automotive power, heat, vibration, crash safety, or permanent installation.
- Development boards, GPS modules, and generic OBD-II adapters should not be assumed automotive-rated, universally compatible, or safe to wire directly into a car’s electrical system.
- Keep phone-based and in-car features to parked setup, and never let a dashboard draw your attention while the car is moving.
