To format an SSD in Windows 10, open Disk Management, right-click the correct volume, choose Format, review the settings, and confirm. This applies to a secondary or external SSD volume. Windows cannot format a partition that is in use, including the partition that contains Windows, so the system drive is not something you format from inside the running system.
Formatting a volume destroys the data on its partition. Microsoft’s Support guidance for Disk Management puts it directly: “Formatting a volume will destroy any data on the partition.” Copy anything you need somewhere else before you start, and confirm which disk and volume you are about to format. Microsoft’s Disk Management guidance applies to both Windows 10 and Windows 11, and it describes the tool the same way in each.

Before you start
- Copy files you want to keep to another drive or cloud storage. An external SSD or other drive can serve as that backup destination, but no particular product is required.
- Identify the target SSD by its capacity and volume label. Two drives of the same size are common, and selecting the wrong one is the most costly mistake in this process.
- Decide what the drive is for. If it is a secondary or external SSD, the steps below apply. If you are reinstalling Windows on the system drive, read the clean installation section first, because the workflow is different.
Format an existing SSD volume
These steps cover a volume that already has a partition and is not the active Windows partition.

diskmgmt.msc, and select OK. - In the disk and volume listing, find the SSD by its capacity and label. Make sure you are not selecting a different disk or a partition that holds files you need.
- Right-click the intended volume and select Format.
- Enter a volume label and choose a file system. For a typical Windows computer SSD, NTFS is the usual choice. The comparison below explains when another file system fits better.
- Decide between a quick format and a normal format. The table below shows the difference.
- Review the settings for the selected volume, then confirm the format.
- Wait until the volume shows a healthy status. It is then ready to use.
Quick format or normal format
Quick format and normal format differ in how thoroughly the volume is handled, and Microsoft describes them that way in its Disk Management guidance.

| Option | What Microsoft describes | Speed | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quick format | Creates a new file table but does not fully overwrite or erase the volume | Faster | You need a usable volume promptly and do not need a full erase |
| Normal format | Fully erases existing data on the volume | Takes longer | You want the volume fully erased as part of the format |
Do not treat a quick format as a way to securely erase data from an SSD.
Set up a new SSD or unallocated space
A new SSD may not show a usable volume yet. Its space may appear as unallocated, or Windows may ask you to initialize the disk first. Not every SSD arrives in the same state, and the right partition style depends on the hardware, so check what Disk Management shows before acting.

Initialize the disk
If Windows asks to initialize the disk, select the intended disk and choose a partition style. Microsoft’s guidance on the two options is summarized below.
Recommended Free Tools
| Partition style | Microsoft’s guidance |
|---|---|
| GPT | Recommended for modern UEFI systems, for large drives, and when more than four partitions are needed |
| MBR | For older hardware or operating systems without UEFI support |
Create a New Simple Volume
- In Disk Management, right-click the unallocated space on the intended SSD.
- Select New Simple Volume.
- Follow the wizard to set the volume size and drive letter.
- Complete the formatting step in the wizard, then confirm the new volume appears as healthy in Disk Management.
Choose a file system
Microsoft’s examples associate the file systems with different kinds of media, which makes the choice mostly a matter of where the drive will be used.

- ENCLOSURE ONLY, SSD NOT INCLUDED: This is the case you put your own M.2 SSD into, not a drive with storage inside. 100% tool-free, so the SSD installs and comes out in seconds with no screwdriver.
- FITS M.2 NVMe AND SATA: Works with both M.2 PCIe NVMe and M.2 SATA SSDs in 2242, 2260 and 2280 lengths. Bare drives only, no room for a drive with a pre-installed heatsink. It does NOT take 2.5in SATA drives or mSATA.
- 10GBPS USB 3.2 TYPE-C: Up to 10Gbps, and up to 1000MB/s in real transfers. Backward compatible with USB 3.1 and USB 3.0 at their own speed limits. Bus powered, no drivers and no external power supply.
- SLIM ALUMINUM BUILD: Ultra-slim aluminum case with an ABS frame, with a thermal pad to move heat off the drive. Light enough to live in a laptop bag, solid enough to survive it.
- IN THE BOX: Enclosure, 8in Type-C to Type-C cable and user manual. Works with Windows 7 or later, macOS 10.5 or later and Linux. Register on the manufacturer's website for extended warranty service.
| File system | Microsoft’s examples | Practical choice |
|---|---|---|
| NTFS | Computer disks, including HDDs and SSDs | The practical default for a Windows computer SSD |
| FAT or exFAT | SD cards, flash drives, and USB drives | Consider this only if the drive must move between devices that cannot read NTFS, and check compatibility first |
Clean installation is a different job
Formatting a secondary volume inside a running Windows session is not the same as wiping the drive during a reinstall. Microsoft says installation media is typically created on a USB drive or DVD, recommends backing up files first, and describes a clean installation as removing personal files, apps, settings, and manufacturer customizations.
During setup, follow the instructions for the intended target disk and verify the disk identity before deleting any partition. Deleting partitions on the wrong disk at that stage is a common and avoidable loss.

- Portable and Durable Aluminum Build: Reinforced ABS frame with an aluminum alloy top keeps your SSD protected and cool. Slim, lightweight, and perfect for creators, gamers, and anyone needing fast portable storage.
Troubleshooting
- The Format option is unavailable or the format fails. The volume is probably in use. Close programs that may be using it and try again. If the volume contains the Windows installation, stop here, because Windows will not format it from inside the running system.
- The SSD does not appear as a usable volume. Check whether Disk Management shows it as uninitialized or as unallocated space, and follow the new-drive section above.
- You formatted the wrong volume. Stop writing new data to that drive right away. Recovery is not guaranteed; see the next section.
Recovering files after a format
Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery documentation lists recovery after formatting as an NTFS scenario and recommends Extensive mode for it. This is a recovery option, not a promise that formatted files can be restored. The sooner you stop writing to the affected drive, the better your chances, so the first step is to avoid saving anything to it.
Formatting and SSD maintenance are separate
Microsoft describes Windows optimization as trimming SSDs and defragmenting hard drives. Formatting is a different task, and the steps in this guide do not require an SSD-specific format procedure. Use the Windows optimization tool for routine upkeep after the volume is set up.

Windows 10 support context
Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Support included free software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes through Windows Update. The Disk Management workflow above is unchanged by that date, but a PC still running Windows 10 without support should be kept current on security in other ways.
