Samsung describes these steps as ways to address likely causes. It does not publish a measured speed gain for any of them, so treat them as a sequence of things to test, not guaranteed fixes. Work through them in order and stop when the phone responds normally.
What usually causes a slow or freezing Galaxy
Samsung’s support guidance on slow or unresponsive devices lists several common possibilities. Each one is a candidate, not a diagnosis of your particular phone:

- Storage that is close to full
- Apps running in the background
- Outdated software
- Insufficient available memory
- Temporary system errors
- A third-party app installed shortly before the problem began, especially if you now see unwanted ads
Samsung’s US support page on slowdowns after installing third-party apps covers that last case directly. Its wording on background activity is plain: “Apps running in the background may affect device performance and cause slowdowns.” (Samsung Canada Support, “Basic steps to improve your Samsung Galaxy device performance,” updated August 27, 2026.)

Check your menus before you start
Settings names, screens and diagnostic options differ by Galaxy model, software version, app version and country. Samsung’s Device care guidance notes that older devices may label the feature “Battery and device care” or “Device maintenance.” If a path below does not match your screen, open Settings and search for the function name, such as “Device care,” “Storage” or “Diagnostics.” Device care diagnostics are available on Galaxy devices running Android 12 or later. To check your version, look in Settings under About phone.

Work through the built-in checks in order
Step 1: Check storage
- Open Settings > Device care > Storage.
- Review what is using space.
- Delete only files or apps you no longer need.
Samsung’s guidance asks you to review items and remove unnecessary ones, not to wipe every cached or downloaded item. Deleted files and uninstalled apps cannot be restored from the phone itself, so back up photos or documents you want to keep first. Samsung does not set a universal amount of free space that a phone needs, so judge the result by how the phone behaves after the cleanup.
Step 2: Manage background activity
- Open Settings > Device care > Memory and tap Clean now to stop selected unused background apps.
- Alternatively, open the recent apps view and close apps you are not using.
- Use the phone normally for a while and see whether the lag returns.
Closing an app can interrupt its background work. Messaging, sync or alarm features may stop until you reopen the app, so close apps you can afford to pause. Memory cleaning does not permanently fix every slowdown. If the phone slows again after a few hours or days, the cause is likely one of the other items on this list.

Step 3: Update software and restart
- Open Settings > Software update and tap Download and install if an update is available.
- Follow the prompts on screen and keep the phone charged while it installs.
- If the phone is still sluggish afterwards, restart it. Samsung says a restart can close running apps and refresh the system after temporary software issues.
Some devices offer an automatic restart under Device care or Auto optimisation. Whether that option appears depends on your model and software. If you do not see it, a manual restart still achieves the same basic result.

- If the slowdown or unwanted ads started after you installed an app, uninstall any app you do not recognise or no longer trust.
- Open Settings > Device care and run a scan for threats.
- Restart the phone and check whether the behaviour has stopped.
Samsung’s guidance uses Device care for the scan. You do not need to install a separate cleanup or optimiser app.

When the problem continues: run diagnostics
If the phone still freezes or stays slow after the four checks above, run a diagnostic test. Samsung offers two routes, and each one reports different information.
Samsung Members phone diagnostics
Open the Samsung Members app and look for the phone diagnostics option. Test names and results vary by model and app version. Use the result as a guide to what to report, not as a final verdict.

Device care diagnostics
- Open Settings > Device care > Diagnostics.
- Run the available tests.
- Note any component the test flags before contacting support.
This option requires Galaxy devices running Android 12 or later. On older software, use Samsung Members or search Settings for the diagnostic function.

When to contact Samsung support
Contact Samsung Support for your exact model and region if the diagnostics flag a component, or if the slowdown continues after all the checks above. Samsung’s pages do not set a repair threshold, and they do not name a replacement part for any given symptom. Avoid assuming that one specific part has failed based only on a slow phone.
