Protein soda can be a convenient way to add protein without the sugar found in many soft drinks, but it is not automatically a healthy drink. The useful question is whether a specific can fits your caffeine tolerance, dairy needs, sweetener preferences and overall diet. Barebells Protein Soda illustrates the trade-off clearly: it combines clear whey protein and zero sugar with a substantial caffeine dose, sucralose and a milk allergen.
What protein soda is
Protein soda is a carbonated, usually clear beverage that adds protein to a soft-drink-style format. Instead of the opaque appearance associated with milk-based shakes, these drinks generally use clear whey protein isolate, which can dissolve into a transparent liquid. The result is designed to taste and drink more like flavored soda than a traditional protein shake.

Barebells describes its drink as “a clear, carbonated drink that provides bold and delicious flavors together with the essential macronutrient protein, and functional ingredients caffeine and B Vitamins.” The product range includes cola and fruit-style flavors. Arla Foods Ingredients has separately described a protein-soda formulation using its Lacprodan BLG-100 whey protein that delivers protein with zero sugar and is positioned for sports nutrition and use around physical activity. That concept description is not a guarantee that every product in the category has the same recipe.
Why clear whey is used
Clear whey isolate is filtered to remove much of the fat and lactose associated with ordinary whey concentrates. It can therefore produce a lighter drink with little sediment, although the finished beverage still comes from milk and should not be treated as dairy-free. Processing also does not make all clear-whey products nutritionally identical: flavorings, acids, sweeteners, caffeine and vitamins vary by brand and flavor.

What is in Barebells Protein Soda?
The current Barebells nutrition information provides a useful worked example. The values below are for a 355 ml can; check the package you actually buy because recipes and labels can change.
| Label item | Amount or description | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Protein | 10 g per 355 ml serving | A convenient protein contribution, but not a complete meal or a substitute for all protein sources. |
| Total sugar | 0 g | Useful when replacing a sugar-sweetened soft drink. |
| Added sugar | 0 g | No added sugar is listed for the serving. |
| Calories | 50 | Lower energy density than many conventional soft drinks or shakes. |
| Total carbohydrate | 1 g | Most of the drink is not supplied as digestible carbohydrate. |
| Caffeine | 200 mg per can | The main reason a low-sugar can may still be unsuitable for some people. |
| Sweetener | Sucralose | A high-intensity sweetener used instead of sugar. |
| Protein source and allergen | Whey protein isolate; contains milk | Not appropriate for people with a milk allergy. |
| Lactose statement | Below 0.01%, according to Barebells | Relevant to lactose-sensitive consumers, but not the same as being dairy-free. |
| Other listed components | Carbonated water, acids, natural and/or artificial flavors depending on flavor, preservatives, colors and B vitamins | Flavor panels should be checked individually. |
Is zero sugar enough to make protein soda healthy?
Zero sugar is a meaningful advantage for someone trying to reduce liquid sugar. Removing sugar can also keep the calorie contribution modest while retaining a sweet taste. The protein adds nutritional value that an ordinary diet soda does not provide.
Those positives do not settle the health question by themselves. The 2024 Federal Register discussion of the United States Food and Drug Administration’s “healthy” labeling framework makes an important distinction: a beverage can be low in sugar or calories without automatically being equivalent to foods that contribute a broad range of required nutrients. Protein soda is still a formulated drink, not a replacement for meals built around minimally processed foods.

Caffeine is the biggest health trade-off
A full Barebells can contains 200 mg of caffeine. That is a substantial amount for one beverage, even though the drink has no sugar. Caffeine can be useful for alertness or exercise routines, but sensitivity varies widely. A person who feels jittery, develops a racing heartbeat, has trouble sleeping or gets headaches after caffeine should treat the can as a stimulant product rather than as ordinary flavored water.
Who should be especially cautious
Barebells advises a maximum of two cans per day and specifically cautions children, pregnant or breastfeeding women and people who are sensitive to caffeine. Those groups should follow advice from a qualified health professional and the current package rather than assuming that a zero-sugar label makes the drink suitable.
Anyone combining the soda with coffee, tea, energy drinks, pre-workout products or caffeine-containing medicines should count the total caffeine from all sources. The can’s protein and calorie information does not reveal that combined exposure. If sleep quality matters, remember that caffeine consumed later in the day can remain relevant even when the beverage itself feels light and refreshing.

- Read the caffeine amount per can, not only the serving size printed in small type.
- List other caffeine consumed that day before deciding whether another can fits your routine.
- Start with less than a full can if you do not know your tolerance, and stop if you experience unpleasant symptoms.
- Do not use the company’s two-can suggestion as a personal target; it is a stated product limit, not individualized medical advice.
What sweetener does protein soda use?
Sucralose appears in the Barebells ingredient list. It is a high-intensity sweetener, so the drink can taste sweet without supplying the sugar that would be needed in a conventional soda. People differ in whether they like the flavor and whether they prefer to avoid non-sugar sweeteners.

The presence of sucralose does not make the product equivalent to a sugar-sweetened drink, but it also means the beverage is not simply carbonated water with protein. If your priority is avoiding all high-intensity sweeteners, this formula does not meet that requirement. Check the ingredient panel for each flavor because natural or artificial flavor systems, colors and preservatives can differ.
Ingredient lists should be read alongside the Nutrition Facts panel. “Zero sugar” describes the quantified sugar content; it does not describe the sweetener type, caffeine level, allergen status or degree of processing.
Is protein soda safe for people avoiding dairy or lactose?
No protein soda made with whey isolate should be assumed dairy-free. Barebells identifies milk as an allergen because the protein comes from whey. A milk allergy is an immune reaction and is different from lactose intolerance; a very low lactose statement does not remove the milk-allergen concern.
Barebells states that lactose is present below 0.01% and describes the drink as gluten-free. That information may make the product more manageable for some people with lactose sensitivity, but tolerance is individual and the current can remains the final authority. People with a diagnosed milk allergy should avoid it unless their clinician has specifically advised otherwise.

How to compare protein sodas
When comparing two cans, do not rank them by protein alone. Use the same serving basis and record the following items:
| Comparison axis | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Protein | How many grams are supplied per can, and is the amount meaningful for your intended snack or recovery use? |
| Calories and carbohydrate | What does the drink contribute beyond protein? |
| Total and added sugar | Is the zero-sugar claim supported by the Nutrition Facts panel? |
| Caffeine | How many milligrams are in the entire can, and does the product suit your sensitivity? |
| Sweetener | Does the formula use sucralose or another sweetener you choose to avoid? |
| Sodium | How much sodium is present, particularly if you are comparing several servings? |
| Allergens | Does it contain milk, soy or another ingredient you must avoid? |
| Serving size | Are the printed values for the whole can or only part of it? |
| Intended use | Is it designed as a caffeinated soft drink, a protein snack, or a sports-nutrition product? |
Caffeine should be the first filter for caffeine-sensitive shoppers, while whey and the milk declaration are decisive for anyone avoiding dairy. A product with more protein is not automatically the better choice if it also brings an unwanted stimulant or allergen.
A step-by-step label check
- Confirm the can size. Write down the milliliters or fluid ounces so you do not compare a single serving with a multi-serving bottle.
- Read protein, calories and carbohydrate. Decide whether the protein amount justifies choosing this drink over food or a non-caffeinated protein option.
- Check both sugar lines. Look for total sugar and added sugar rather than relying on front-of-can wording.
- Find caffeine. If it is not printed clearly, treat the product as unsuitable until the manufacturer provides a current figure.
- Scan ingredients for sweeteners. Note sucralose and any other high-intensity sweetener that conflicts with your preferences.
- Read allergen and dietary statements. Whey means milk; a low-lactose statement does not mean dairy-free.
- Verify the exact flavor. Natural or artificial flavors, colors, preservatives and nutrient additions may change between varieties.
- Recheck the package periodically. Manufacturers can reformulate, alter serving sizes or update caffeine and allergen statements.
Who may find protein soda useful?
- Adults who want a portable protein serving and prefer a clear, carbonated drink to a thick shake.
- People replacing a sugary soft drink who are comfortable with caffeine and sucralose.
- Active consumers who want a convenient beverage around exercise, provided the caffeine dose fits their routine and their overall diet supplies adequate nutrients.
- People who can consume milk proteins and have checked the current flavor’s allergen statement.
Who should choose another option?
- Anyone with a milk allergy or a strict dairy-free diet.
- People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, underage or highly caffeine-sensitive unless a qualified professional has confirmed that the product is appropriate.
- Those avoiding sucralose or preferring drinks made without high-intensity sweeteners.
- Anyone seeking a non-stimulant protein source, especially late in the day or when caffeine from other sources is already high.
- People expecting a complete meal, broad micronutrient coverage or a treatment for a health condition from one can.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Confusing “zero sugar” with “zero downside”
The absence of sugar addresses one issue only. Caffeine, sweetener choice and milk content still require separate checks.

Assuming clear means dairy-free
Clarity refers to appearance. Whey remains a milk-derived protein, so read the allergen declaration even when the beverage looks like soda.

Comparing cans without matching serving sizes
A label can appear lower in caffeine or calories simply because its stated serving is smaller than the package. Convert comparisons to the amount you will actually drink.
Using the product as a nutritional shortcut
Protein soda supplies a defined protein amount, but it does not replace the fiber, vitamins, minerals and food variety found in a balanced diet. Use it as one beverage choice, not as the foundation of your diet.
Trusting an old review or product photo

Protein soda is best understood as a low-sugar, caffeinated protein beverage rather than a universally healthy soft drink. Barebells’ current example offers a modest protein serving with no sugar, but the same can also delivers 200 mg of caffeine, uses sucralose and contains milk-derived whey. It can fit an adult’s routine when those characteristics are wanted and tolerated. It is a poor fit when you need dairy-free nutrition, avoid high-intensity sweeteners, must limit caffeine or expect a complete food from a beverage. The label-and-context test is more reliable than the word “protein” on the front of the can.
