Is PhantomJS Still Maintained—and Is It Safe to Use?

PhantomJS is no longer maintained, so it is a poor choice for new browser automation. Here is what its archived status means, what the cited CVE actually covers, and how to assess a migration.

No. PhantomJS is no longer maintained: its official project page says development is suspended, and its GitHub repository has been archived and made read-only. That makes it a risky choice for new work, particularly when automation handles untrusted websites or runs near sensitive credentials. The sources available do not establish a specific vulnerability in the official PhantomJS project, so the security concern is the absence of expected future fixes—not proof of a particular exploit.

What PhantomJS is, and what its status means

PhantomJS is a JavaScript-scriptable headless browser built on QtWebKit. It was used for browser automation, screenshots, headless website testing, and network monitoring. Its project documentation says development is suspended until further notice. GitHub marks the official repository archived and read-only since May 30, 2023; the repository identifies version 2.1 as its latest stable release.

Archived and read-only means you should not expect the official project to receive ongoing maintenance or security fixes. Do not assume development has resumed without checking the project’s current status.

Is PhantomJS safe to use?

For a new project, generally avoid it. An unmaintained browser engine is a poor fit for general-purpose browsing or automation that processes untrusted web content. The risk is more serious if the process can access valuable credentials, internal systems, or sensitive data: a browser handling hostile content in that environment can expose more than the test itself.

This is a risk judgment based on suspended maintenance, not a claim that the official PhantomJS project has a confirmed exploit. The security sources reviewed do not establish a specific vulnerability in the official ariya/phantomjs codebase.

Keep CVE-2016-10661 in the right context

NIST’s CVE-2016-10661 record concerns phantomjs-cheniu, a distinct package. It describes that package downloading binary resources over HTTP, which could allow a man-in-the-middle attacker to interfere with the download and potentially achieve remote code execution. That record is evidence about the named package and its installer behavior; it is not evidence that the official ariya/phantomjs browser project has that vulnerability.

If you must keep a legacy PhantomJS job running

Treat it as legacy software while you plan a migration. Risk-management measures include isolating the execution environment, limiting its network access and access to credentials, and allowing only trusted inputs. These are prudent containment steps, not controls specifically prescribed by PhantomJS maintainers.

What to use instead for browser tests

Headless Chrome is a reasonable candidate to evaluate for browser-test migration. Chrome’s official documentation describes headless Chrome as similar to PhantomJS for automated testing, while distinguishing PhantomJS’s older WebKit engine from Chrome’s Blink engine. It documents Chrome use with Selenium, WebDriver, and ChromeDriver.

That does not make Chrome a guaranteed drop-in replacement. Before choosing a replacement, check:

  • Maintenance and security updates: Confirm that the browser and its automation stack are actively supported.
  • Rendering compatibility: Check that the rendering engine matches the sites and browser behavior your tests need to cover.
  • Test integration: Verify that the replacement works with your test runner and CI setup.
  • Migration effort: Inspect how much of your suite depends on PhantomJS-specific APIs or behavior. Effort varies by codebase; there is no universal estimate.

PhantomJS’s own test guide describes it as a browser runner, not a test framework. If your tests use an external framework or runner, assess that integration separately from the browser change.

For screenshot-only work: ScreenshotNeo

If the task is taking website screenshots rather than running a browser test suite, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first. It is a screenshot API and MCP server, not a drop-in replacement for PhantomJS test automation. A GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; its response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Cookie-consent handling and removal of known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are available for cleaner captures, and can be turned off.

For example, this cURL request captures a page as WebP. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response behavior:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo also offers an MCP server with tools for taking screenshots, getting page information, and capturing PDFs. Its free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. The stated plans include all features.
