Its interconnected routes, shortcuts, checkpoints, challenging bosses, and dark atmosphere invite the comparison, but previews describe combat that is faster, more combo-driven, and more like a character-action game than the deliberate Soulslike template.
Why Phantom Blade Zero gets compared with Soulslikes
The comparison is strongest in the world design and atmosphere. A six-hour preview by MeriStation describes interconnected areas, locked doors, shortcuts, checkpoints, a dark tone, and demanding bosses. Those are familiar Soulslike ingredients, and the outlet says the developers acknowledged Soulslike influence on the level design.

MeriStation also reports that S-GAME described the game as “30% Soulslike.” Treat that as a colorful, attributed characterization—not a measured share or a definitive genre label. The official PlayStation listing instead calls it a dark wuxia action RPG, while Steam’s “Souls-like” and “Hack and Slash” labels are user-defined tags rather than an official classification. How its combat differs from the Soulslike template
The available hands-on accounts emphasize speed, choreography, and combos over slow, stamina-managed exchanges. MeriStation reports that the preview build it played had no stamina bar, and describes a faster rhythm than a conventional Soulslike. PC Gamer’s preview likewise characterizes the combat as flowing through elaborate animations and combo transitions.

That direction fits S-GAME’s stated influences. In a 2023 developer post, the studio pointed to hack-and-slash games such as Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden, alongside the movement and energy of 1990s kung fu films. S-GAME wrote: “Combat moves in Phantom Blade Zero have to be made with handcrafted animation, because motion capturing can’t do it justice.” PlayStation Blog
Is Phantom Blade Zero like Sekiro?
There is a meaningful point of comparison: both games ask players to respond precisely to dangerous enemies, and parrying is part of Phantom Blade Zero’s combat. But PC Gamer’s hands-on preview found the parry timing more generous than Sekiro’s. MeriStation also reported a quicker pace and no stamina bar in the normal-difficulty preview build it played.

Those are preview impressions, not guarantees about every difficulty setting or the final release build. They suggest that players who enjoy learning enemy patterns may recognize something familiar, while those expecting Sekiro’s specific combat rhythm should not assume it will carry over unchanged. Which familiar action game is it closest to?
The evidence points to a blend rather than a one-to-one match. Its routes, shortcuts, checkpoints, dark setting, and bosses support the Soulslike comparison; the combat presentation and developer-cited influences lean toward fast hack-and-slash and character-action games. Calling it a wuxia action RPG with Soulslike elements captures both sides without implying that it follows every convention of either genre.

What the previews do—and do not—tell you
Details such as stamina, death penalties, parry timing, and upgrade structure come from preview builds and hands-on impressions. MeriStation’s claims about stamina and death penalties are specifically tied to the normal-difficulty build it played; PC Gamer’s parry comparison is an individual preview impression. They are useful clues about the game’s direction, but they should not be treated as confirmed rules for every difficulty or the final version.
The official feature descriptions point to a broad action toolkit. S-GAME’s August 2026 deep dive says the game has more than 30 main weapons and 25 secondary weapons called Phantom Edges. PlayStation’s feature page advertises 30+ primary weapons and 20+ Phantom Edges, so the newer S-GAME count is the more current official figure. The PlayStation page also advertises seamless combos and difficulty adjustment. PlayStation Blog PlayStation
