The project says it has no account or telemetry and stores settings locally, but it documents some network activity. OpenLogi is open source, yet its maintainers describe it as actively developed and not yet stable; the available information does not establish that it has passed an independent security audit.
What OpenLogi needs access to
OpenLogi is an open-source alternative to Logitech Options+ for supported Logitech devices. Its background agent handles device discovery and changes settings through Logitech’s HID++ protocol. The project lists wired connections, Bluetooth, Logi Bolt, and Unifying receivers as connection types, but what you can customize depends on the specific device and the features it exposes. See the OpenLogi repository and its architecture documentation for the project’s description of its device support and design.

Device communication
To inspect or change a mouse’s settings, the agent must be able to communicate with the device. This is distinct from button remapping: device access lets OpenLogi work with the mouse’s supported features, while remapping also requires intercepting and generating input events.

Input capture and event generation
When you remap a button, the app needs to detect the original mouse action and generate the assigned action. The architecture documentation identifies macOS CGEventTap, Linux evdev/uinput, and Windows low-level mouse hooks in its implementation map. That is why remapping involves operating-system input access, not just changing a local configuration entry. Exact permission prompts can vary by operating system and version; the project materials cited here do not provide a complete, current list for macOS or Windows.

- Your hand can relax in comfort hour after hour with this ergonomically designed mouse. Its contoured shape with soft rubber grips, gently curved sides and broad palm area give you the support you need for effortless control all day long.
- You’ve got the control to do more, faster. Flipping through photo albums and Web pages is a breeze, especially for right-handers—with three standard buttons plus Back/Forward buttons that you can also program to switch applications, go full screen and more. And side-to-side scrolling plus zoom gives you the power to scroll horizontally and vertically through your music library, maps and Facebook feeds, and zoom in and out of photos and budget spreadsheets with a click.* * Requires Logitech SetPoint software (Windows) or Logitech Control Center software (Mac OS X)
- Two years of battery life practically eliminates the need to replace batteries. ** The On/Off switch helps conserve power, smart sleep mode extends battery life and an indicator light eliminates surprises. ** Battery life may vary based on user and computing conditions.
- The tiny Logitech Unifying receiver stays in your laptop. There’s no need to unplug it when you move around, so there’s less worry of it being lost. And you can easily add compatible wireless mice and keyboards to the same wireless receiver.
Linux device-node access
OpenLogi says its Linux packages install udev rules that grant the user access to /dev/hidraw*, /dev/uinput, and the Logitech mouse’s /dev/input/event* node. According to the project, this allows the app to work without running it as root. Those rules grant access to input-related device nodes, so review the package and installation instructions for your distribution rather than bypassing them by launching the app with elevated privileges.
Camera permissions are for a different feature
The architecture guide describes a permissions component that reports permission status and links to System Settings; it also notes camera permission APIs in the camera component. Camera access relates to OpenLogi’s webcam features, not the mouse-customization functions described here.

- Compact Mouse: With a comfortable and contoured shape, this Logitech ambidextrous wireless mouse feels great in either right or left hand and is far superior to a touchpad
- Durable and Reliable: This USB wireless mouse features a line-by-line scroll wheel, up to 1 year of battery life (2) thanks to a smart sleep mode function, and comes with the included AA battery
- Universal Compatibility: Your Logitech mouse works with your Windows PC, Mac, or laptop, so no matter what type of computer you own today or buy tomorrow your mouse will be compatible
- Plug and Play Simplicity: Just plug in the tiny nano USB receiver and start working in seconds with a strong, reliable connection to your wireless computer mouse up to 33 feet / 10 m (5)
- Better than touchpad: Get more done by adding M185 to your laptop; according to a recent study, laptop users who chose this mouse over a touchpad were 50% more productive (3) and worked 30% faster (4)
What the project says about privacy and network activity
OpenLogi’s maintainers say the app does not require an account and does not use telemetry. The architecture documentation describes local TOML configuration rather than a cloud account. Those are project statements, not independently measured findings. The configuration documentation’s search extract says the app makes one HEAD request to GitHub’s latest-release endpoint at launch to check for a newer version, without downloading the update. The project also describes fetching device images as network activity. The configuration details come from an official documentation search extract, so treat the exact implementation description as less certain than information directly available in the repository.
In practical terms, “no telemetry” should not be read as “never makes a network request.” The project documents update-check and device-image activity, while saying it does not use telemetry. The cited materials do not independently verify the app’s network behavior.

How safe is OpenLogi?
There is not enough evidence to label OpenLogi unconditionally safe or unsafe. The repository is public, and the code is licensed under MIT or Apache 2.0, so it can be inspected. Public source availability does not by itself prove that a downloaded binary corresponds to that source, rule out vulnerabilities, or substitute for a security audit. No independent audit is established by the project materials cited here.
The maintainers explicitly warn: “OpenLogi is under active development and not yet stable — features and config may still change.” That matters if you depend on consistent behavior or are uncomfortable granting input and device access to software that is still changing. The project describes signed and notarized macOS disk-image downloads, signed Windows installers or archives, and Linux package signature and checksum verification. These measures can help you verify an installation, but they are not an independent security review. Follow the installation and verification instructions in the official repository.

- Click more. Scroll more. Do more. Logitech Marathon Mouse M705 uses far less power than comparable wireless mice from other companies. That means you can go up to three full years between battery changes.*
- Hyper-fast scrolling lets you fly through long documents and Web pages with a single spin of a nearly frictionless metal scroll wheel.
- The sculpted, right-hand shape guides your hand to a naturally comfortable position and places customizable control within your reach. Two thumb buttons lets you move quickly between Web pages.**
- The tiny Logitech Unifying receiver stays in your laptop. There's no need to unplug it when you move around, so there's less worry of it being broken or lost. And you can easily add compatible wireless mice and keyboards to the same wireless receiver.
- Laser grade tracking delivers smooth, responsive, precise cursor control on surfaces that cause problems for standard optical mice, such as polished or wood-grain tables.***
Check compatibility before granting access
Logitech branding alone does not guarantee support. Before installing, check the current project documentation for your exact mouse model and the particular feature you want—such as button remapping—because device capabilities and feature support vary. The project’s listed connection types do not mean every mouse using those connections supports every customization.
