If a UPI payment looks unsuccessful, check the transaction in your app and the linked bank account before deciding what to do next. The app’s status tells you how the payment is being reported; your bank statement or debit alert confirms whether money left your account. The next step depends on whether it was a transfer or a merchant payment—and whether the status is failed or pending.
Check the UPI status and your bank account
- Open the payment in your UPI app. Go to transaction history, select the payment, and note its status, amount, date and time, payee, and transaction or reference ID if shown.
- Check the linked bank account. Look at its statement or debit alerts to see whether the amount was actually debited. An app error or missing confirmation alone does not establish whether your account was charged.
- Save the details. Keep the transaction information and any debit evidence in case you need to raise a complaint. NPCI says users can check transaction status and raise a grievance through a participating bank’s UPI app. NPCI UPI FAQ.
App labels and complaint steps vary. NPCI’s UPI Help guidance describes a flow for selecting a failed transaction, reporting that the customer’s account was not credited back for a failed merchant transaction, receiving a complaint reference, and checking complaint status.

Choose the route that matches the payment
| Situation | What to check or do | Relevant timeline |
|---|---|---|
| Failed funds transfer; your account was debited, but the beneficiary was not credited | Raise the issue with your UPI app or bank and provide the transaction details. | RBI’s 2019 circular sets reversal by T+1 if the beneficiary bank cannot credit the beneficiary. NPCI advises contacting your bank if a failed debit has not been refunded within one hour. |
| Merchant payment; your account was debited, but the merchant did not receive confirmation | You can ask the merchant whether its system recorded the payment, but raise the payment complaint through the app or bank. | RBI’s 2019 circular sets reversal by T+5. |
| Pending transfer; your account was debited, but the beneficiary was not credited | Check the status and allow for settlement; do not treat a pending transfer as the same case as a failed merchant payment. | NPCI says the transfer may reach the beneficiary within 48 hours after the beneficiary bank completes settlement. |
| Suspected unauthorised or fraudulent debit | Contact your bank promptly. NPCI’s UPI Help guidance directs customers reporting a fraudulent transaction to the bank. | Report it promptly rather than waiting on the timelines for failed transactions. |
For the RBI timelines, T means the calendar date of the transaction; T+1 and T+5 refer to calendar days, not business days. The transfer rule applies where the beneficiary bank cannot credit the beneficiary. The merchant rule applies when the merchant location does not receive transaction confirmation. See the RBI failed-transaction circular.

- Use the transaction’s issue or help option in your UPI app, if available, or contact your bank’s customer support.
- Give the transaction date, amount, payee, reference ID, displayed status, and evidence of the debit. Describe whether it was a transfer or a merchant payment and what was missing: beneficiary credit or merchant confirmation.
- Keep the complaint reference and use the app or bank’s available status-check process to follow up.
- If the applicable RBI turnaround time passes without redress, RBI’s circular says customers can register a complaint with the Reserve Bank–Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2021, as amended from time to time.
NPCI’s advice to contact the bank after one hour concerns an unreversed debit marked failed; it is distinct from the RBI reversal deadlines. NPCI’s possible 48-hour wait concerns a pending transfer after beneficiary-bank settlement. Do not treat these timeframes as interchangeable.

What to expect if a reversal is late
Under the RBI’s 2019 circular, compensation is ₹100 per day for delay beyond the applicable UPI reversal deadline: beyond T+1 for the qualifying uncredited transfer, or beyond T+5 for the qualifying merchant-payment case. The timeline and compensation depend on which transaction case applies; raise the issue with your bank or payment app and retain the complaint reference. RBI circular and turnaround-time framework.
