The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time still offers a compelling journey; its original presentation, however, shows its late-1990s age. If early 3D visuals and design feel like a barrier, choose a more modernized version rather than forcing yourself through the N64 release.
What makes Ocarina of Time worth trying?
Link’s quest takes him across Hyrule and through time to confront Ganondorf. Nintendo describes combat, items, bosses, and puzzles as central to the adventure, while the ocarina is more than a musical instrument: learned songs can open paths and change the time of day. Nintendo’s description of the N64 game and its Switch 2 remake page outline those elements.

The enduring appeal is the way exploration, dungeons, atmosphere, and music work together. In its retrospective review, Nintendo Life praised those qualities and judged the game enjoyable today, while noting that its visuals can feel dated. That is a critic’s assessment, not a guarantee that every new player will connect with it.
What might feel dated to a first-time player?
The N64 version has jagged polygons, rough textures, and lighting that does not match modern expectations, according to Nintendo Life’s review. Its age is visible, even if the adventure remains engaging. The practical question is whether you can enjoy a classic 3D game on its own terms, not whether it looks like a recent release.
#1 Best Overall
- This is the world edition. It has different packaging but is fully authentic and works on US region 3DS systems.
- The Legend of Zelda veterans can look forward to the Master Quest - a second quest with revamped puzzles and redesigned dungeons.
- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D is a masterful improvement on one of the landmark releases in video game history.
- “E10+”, w/Animated Blood, Fantasy Violence, Suggestive Themes
There is no need to play an earlier Zelda game first based on the official descriptions available here. The premise and core mechanics are presented as an adventure centered on Link’s journey through Hyrule and time.
Which version should you choose?
| Version | Best fit | Access and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| N64 version through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack | You already have the membership and want to play before the remake arrives. | Nintendo says N64 Classics access requires an active Expansion Pack membership, and it has no plans to sell the classic games separately. Continued access depends on keeping the membership active. See Nintendo’s Classics information and Nintendo Australia’s N64 Classics page. |
| Switch 2 remake | You prefer modernized presentation and controls and are willing to wait. | Nintendo lists a November 5, 2026 release and announces overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, orchestral music, enhanced controls, and modern camera movement. These are announced features, not independently verified gameplay impressions. The US listing specifies a physical edition and handheld, TV, and tabletop play. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 listing. |
| Ocarina of Time 3D for Nintendo 3DS | You own or can access a Nintendo 3DS-family system and its version. | Nintendo describes refined gameplay, overhauled 3D visuals, a touch-screen inventory, and motion controls. The official page identifies it as a 3DS-family release; current retail availability is not established here. See Nintendo’s game page. |
In short, choose by how much you value upgraded presentation, what hardware and membership you already have, and whether you want to play now or wait. The Switch 2 features above are Nintendo’s announcements; they should not be mistaken for hands-on impressions.

As of October 7, 2026, Nintendo’s US listing gives the Switch 2 remake a November 5, 2026 release date.
