Test a fully charged, compatible battery in the tool, then repeat the same task with a second known-good pack. If the problem follows one battery to another compatible tool, the battery is the stronger suspect. If multiple packs perform poorly in one tool, investigate workload, operating conditions, contacts, or the tool itself.
How to isolate the battery from the tool
- Set up a fair comparison. Fully charge a pack compatible with the exact tool. Use the same task under similar conditions for each test. Note the battery’s Ah rating, approximate age, charge indication, and whether it cuts out or simply runs down faster than expected.
- Try another known-good battery in the suspect tool. If that pack works normally on the same task, the original battery becomes more suspect. If both packs behave poorly, the tool, workload, or conditions deserve closer attention.
- Test the suspect battery in another compatible tool, if available. If the symptom travels with the battery, that points toward the pack; if it stays with the original tool, that points toward the tool or its operating conditions. RYOBI Australia recommends trying another battery and testing a battery in different tools to help isolate a problem (RYOBI Australia battery guidance).
These swaps are clues, not a definitive electrical diagnosis. A single short run cannot establish that a battery is defective: task demand, capacity, temperature, and dirty contacts can produce similar symptoms.

Check whether the task is demanding more than the pack can supply
Runtime depends on the tool, task, battery capacity, and conditions; there is no universal runtime figure that diagnoses a fault. A small-capacity pack can run down quickly or cut out when used with a high-demand tool. RYOBI Support Australia describes the effect as: “Battery drains quickly or cuts out under load.” It gives low battery capacity for a high-demand tool as one possible cause (RYOBI Support Australia runtime guidance).

The Ah rating is a capacity clue, not proof that a battery is healthy. Consider a larger-capacity pack only after checking the existing pack with the swaps above and confirming that the tool accepts that battery platform. For the US 18V ONE+ system, RYOBI lists model PBP004 as 4Ah and model PBP007 as 6Ah, and says both are compatible with that system (PBP004 4Ah battery; PBP007 6Ah battery). A higher-capacity compatible battery may extend runtime for a suitable workload; it will not fix a failing tool, charger, or defective pack.

Rule out temperature-related cutouts
Heavy or continuous work can heat a battery, while cold conditions can reduce performance or lead to shutdown. A thermal cutoff can be protective rather than evidence of permanent battery failure. RYOBI Australia says its 18V batteries may cut out for thermal-overload protection and advises letting a hot battery cool for about 30 minutes (RYOBI Australia runtime guidance). That timing is Australian support guidance, not a universal threshold for every battery and tool; follow the manual for your exact model.
Inspect contacts and charging indicators
Check the battery and tool contacts
With the battery removed, look for dirt or debris on the contacts. RYOBI Australia recommends cleaning contacts with a dry cloth (RYOBI Australia runtime guidance). Do not treat cleaning as a repair for a pack that continues to fail across tools.

Read the charger’s own indicator chart
Charger lights are model-specific clues, not a universal battery-failure code. Check the instructions for the exact charger and compare its behavior with another compatible battery. RYOBI Australia’s charger guidance lists hot or cold packs, deeply discharged packs, and a defective battery or charger among possible explanations for indicator states (RYOBI Australia charger guidance). Use the charger manual’s LED chart rather than inferring a fault from a light pattern alone.
Choose the next step based on what the swaps show
If one battery is consistently the outlier
If that pack loses runtime across compatible tools while another pack works normally, check its age and the warranty terms for the country where it was purchased. In the US, RYOBI directs warranty battery replacement requests to customer service and out-of-warranty replacement purchases to The Home Depot (RYOBI US support). Other countries may use different warranty and replacement channels.

If one tool is consistently the outlier
If multiple known-good compatible batteries show the same poor performance in one tool, consult that tool’s manual for cleaning, maintenance, and permitted accessories, then seek model-specific service. There is no single internal repair procedure established for every RYOBI tool.
