Short answer: if you already own a Nintendo Switch 2, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Nintendo Switch 2 looks like an easy recommendation for fans who want the most modern version of the classic. If you would buy the console only for this game, wait unless you can also justify the wider Switch 2 library: Nintendo lists the remake at a regular price of $84.99, and the hardware cost is additional.

The remake is exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2 and launches November 5, 2026. Nintendo says it was built from the ground up with overhauled visuals, voiced and expanded scenes, orchestral music, enhanced controls and new activities. A two-hour pre-release preview also reports a free camera, on-demand jumping, smoother item switching and a livelier Castle Town, while stressing that the original adventure remains highly recognizable.

The essential buying facts

Question Answer
What is it? A ground-up Nintendo Switch 2 remake of the Nintendo 64 classic The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
When does it launch? November 5, 2026.
Which hardware runs it? Nintendo Switch 2 only. Nintendo does not list it for the original Nintendo Switch.
How much is the software? Nintendo lists a regular price of $84.99 in 2026. Regional pricing, taxes and retailer discounts can differ.
What play modes are supported? Handheld, TV and tabletop modes.
Is it multiplayer? No. Nintendo lists single-player play on one system.
Are cloud saves supported? Yes, Nintendo lists Nintendo Switch Online save-data cloud support.

Those facts produce two very different decisions. For a Switch 2 owner, the purchase is primarily an $84.99 software choice. For someone without the console, it is a hardware-and-software decision, and Nintendo has not provided a console price in the information available here. Do not treat the game’s price as the total cost of entry.

Do you need a Switch 2 to play the remake?

Yes. Nintendo describes this edition as exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2. The original Switch, Nintendo 64 hardware and earlier releases are separate ways to play the classic, not platforms for this remake. If you do not own the new console, buying the game first will not give you a playable version on older hardware.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That exclusivity matters to the value calculation. It lets Nintendo target the remake’s new camera, microphone and presentation features to one hardware specification, but it also means a fan cannot buy the software cheaply and upgrade consoles later. Anyone purchasing a Switch 2 mainly for this title should decide whether the console will have enough additional value between launch and the rest of their ownership period.

What Nintendo is changing

A new presentation rather than a simple resolution upgrade

Nintendo says the game is “built from the ground up for the Nintendo Switch 2 system.” Its overview promises completely overhauled visuals, fully voiced cutscenes with expanded dialogue and full symphonic orchestral music. This is a remake with a new presentation layer, not merely the Nintendo 64 game rendered at a higher resolution.

The official material does not provide a final resolution target, frame-rate specification, download size or performance test. Do not assume a particular frame rate, image mode or storage requirement until Nintendo publishes those details for your region and edition.

Contemporary movement and camera control

The most consequential practical change reported in the early hands-on preview is that the locked camera has been removed. You can move the camera freely, which should make navigation and combat feel closer to a modern third-person adventure than to a 1998-era fixed-camera design. The preview also reports that Link can jump on command.

Those additions can change how familiar spaces feel. Players who remember carefully positioning Link around fixed viewpoints may find the remake more immediately readable; purists may need time to adjust to a camera that no longer frames every encounter in the original way. The preview characterizes the changes as additive and says the remake remains exceptionally faithful, but it is still an early, two-hour impression rather than a final technical review.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Gyro aiming and smoother item handling

The preview reports gyro controls for the Slingshot and Hero’s Bow, along with smoother item switching. Gyro aiming is optional in the sense that it is an input method rather than a requirement stated by Nintendo, so players who prefer sticks should not assume they must use motion controls. Nintendo has not published a complete control-remapping list, so check the final in-game options before buying accessories specifically for a preferred layout.

The ocarina can listen to you

Nintendo says the Switch 2 microphone can hear a melody that you hum or play on an actual instrument. When it recognizes a melody Link has learned, the in-game ocarina responds. This is a notable use of the console’s hardware: it turns songs from menu-selected commands into something you can perform aloud or acoustically.

Recognition conditions, supported languages, background-noise tolerance and whether every song works equally well have not been specified. Treat the microphone feature as an optional interaction, not as a reason to expect voice communication or a replacement for conventional controls.

A new place to revisit enemies

The Hall of Fallen Heroes provides monster information and rematches. Nintendo has not stated the full roster, reward structure, difficulty scaling or whether every defeated enemy appears there. It is nevertheless a meaningful addition for players who want post-adventure challenges or a way to study enemies after their first encounter.

How faithful is it to the Nintendo 64 game?

The core Hyrule layout and story remain recognizable, according to the early preview, while presentation, movement and side activities expand around them. That makes the remake a poor fit only if your goal is exact historical reproduction of the Nintendo 64 audiovisual experience. It is a stronger fit if you want the same foundational adventure with modern navigation and a more elaborate audiovisual treatment.

Faithfulness does not mean every tiny behavior is preserved. The preview notes at least one change: running up the Castle Town drawbridge chains for a hidden rupee is cut. That example illustrates the right expectation. Familiar landmarks and story beats can coexist with altered routes, removed tricks and new interactions. A pre-release preview cannot establish the final list of changes, so collectors of obscure glitches or speed-running techniques should wait for post-launch documentation.

Who should buy it?

Your situation Recommendation Why
You already own Switch 2 and love Zelda Buy at launch if $84.99 fits your budget. You get the remake’s exclusive presentation and control changes without paying for new hardware.
You own Switch 2 but have never played Ocarina of Time Buy if you want a major single-player adventure and modern controls. The remake is designed as a new entry point, but its final difficulty, length and performance have not been published.
You would buy Switch 2 only for this game Wait unless the complete hardware-plus-software cost is comfortable. The game is a hardware driver, but one $84.99 title cannot by itself establish the value of an otherwise unused console.
You want an exact N64 preservation Keep or seek the original version instead. The remake changes camera behavior, movement, presentation and at least some small environmental interactions.
You want several Switch 2 exclusives A Switch 2 purchase is easier to justify. Ocarina of Time then becomes one part of a broader library rather than the sole reason to own the platform.

What the $84.99 price does—and does not—tell you

Nintendo lists “Regular Price: $84.99” for the game in 2026. The listing does not establish a permanent worldwide price, a launch discount, a retailer promotion or the price of a Switch 2 console. Taxes, currency conversion, regional eShop pricing and physical-retail offers can change the amount you actually pay.

Use this calculation before ordering:

  1. Start with the current price of the Nintendo Switch 2 model you intend to buy.
  2. Add $84.99 for the software if you are using Nintendo’s listed regular price.
  3. Add any storage, accessories, tax, delivery cost or Nintendo Switch Online subscription you actually need.
  4. Compare that total with the number of other Switch 2 games you expect to play over the next year.

A Switch 2 Pro Controller is optional. The remake’s free camera, jumping and gyro aiming may make a full-size controller attractive for some players, but Nintendo does not identify one as required.

Handheld, TV and tabletop use

Nintendo lists all three Switch 2 modes: handheld, TV and tabletop. You can therefore choose between portable play, a television session and a propped-up system with detached controllers. The game is single-player on one system, so these modes change where you play rather than adding local co-op.

Nintendo also lists Nintendo Switch Online save-data cloud support. Cloud saves are useful for protecting progress or moving between systems, but the listing does not say that an active internet connection is required during ordinary play. The cloud feature itself depends on the Nintendo Switch Online service and a connection when data is uploaded or restored. If you need guaranteed travel play, verify the final packaging and system requirements for your region, especially for a digital purchase.

Physical or digital: which edition makes more sense?

Nintendo lists a physical edition, while digital availability is the convenient alternative through the Switch 2 storefront. The best choice depends on how you value access, storage and resale rather than on different gameplay content; no edition-specific feature difference is established here.

Choose physical if… Choose digital if…
You want a cartridge or boxed copy, the ability to lend it, or a resale option. You want to launch the game without changing cartridges and keep it available on the console.
You can find reliable local stock at a price you accept. Your region’s digital price and storage requirements are acceptable.
You prefer ownership that is less dependent on an account’s download access. You are comfortable with account-based access and downloading the software.

Retail stock, preorder terms, regional pricing and final packaging are volatile. Check the current Nintendo listing and the retailer’s return policy before paying. Do not assume a physical copy will be cheaper, that a digital version will include a preload, or that either edition has the same availability in every country unless the seller states it.

Companion features and amiibo

Zelda Notes

Nintendo describes Zelda Notes as a service in the Nintendo Switch App. The announcement does not fully define its launch feature set, phone requirements, account rules or whether every function works offline. Consider it a companion service rather than a prerequisite for the single-player game until Nintendo publishes those details.

Future amiibo

Young Link and Young Zelda amiibo are planned for 2027 and are expected to unlock masks. Existing Zelda amiibo also provide rewards. Because the new figures are scheduled after the game’s November 2026 launch, they should not be counted as launch-day content or as required purchases. Nintendo has not stated the exact masks, reward tables, prices or regional release dates in the available announcement.

GamesRadar+’s observations come from a two-hour pre-release preview, so use them to understand the direction of the remake rather than as proof of final performance or complete content.

A practical purchase checklist

  1. Confirm your console. You need Nintendo Switch 2; the original Switch is not listed as compatible.
  2. Decide whether the remake or the original is your priority. Choose the remake for updated visuals, voiced scenes, orchestral music, a free camera and new systems; choose the older release when exact historical behavior matters more.
  3. Set your real budget. Use Nintendo’s $84.99 regular software price, then add the console and any accessories or subscriptions you actually need.
  4. Check your preferred controls. The remake adds on-demand jumping, free camera movement and gyro aiming, while the microphone can recognize hummed or played melodies.
  5. Choose an edition. Compare current physical stock and digital pricing in your region instead of relying on a global price assumption.
  6. Plan for launch uncertainty. If frame rate, storage, completion time or exact companion features determine your decision, wait for final specifications and independent reviews.

Verdict: is Switch 2 worth buying just for Ocarina of Time?

For an existing Switch 2 owner, yes—provided you want a substantial remake rather than a museum-perfect N64 reproduction. The combination of rebuilt visuals, voiced and expanded scenes, symphonic music, free camera movement, on-demand jumping, gyro aiming, microphone ocarina input and the Hall of Fallen Heroes is enough to make this a materially different way to experience the adventure. The $84.99 price is high enough that casual curiosity should wait for reviews or a sale, but longtime Zelda fans have a clear reason to buy.

For someone who does not own the console, the answer is more conditional. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Nintendo Switch 2 is a compelling reason to consider the platform, not proof that the platform is worth its entire cost by itself. Buy a Nintendo Switch 2 for this game alone only if the combined hardware-and-software expense fits your budget and you are comfortable with the unresolved launch details. Otherwise, wait until the broader Switch 2 library, final specifications and real-world pricing make the decision less dependent on one remake.
