Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as its first QSSR games—not Venom.
What Sony actually announced
In its October 1, 2026 PlayStation Blog announcement, Sony introduced Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR, as “a new performance tier of AI upscaling.” Sony says the technology grew out of Project Amethyst, its AI graphics collaboration with AMD, and describes a streamlined neural-network architecture and an implementation tuned for PS5 performance.

The first games Sony named were Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Sony said both were being patched that day to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5. Insomniac’s Mike Fitzgerald discussed Wolverine specifically; his statement about that game and QSSR does not confirm a Venom title.

QSSR is not an announced “PSSR 3” label
Sony’s post calls the technology QSSR. It does not call it “PSSR 3,” nor does it say that QSSR is a Venom feature. Treating the names as interchangeable would go beyond what Sony announced.

Upscaling is not the same claim as path tracing
The announcement describes AI-guided image upscaling. It does not announce full path tracing for Venom, or establish that path tracing is part of QSSR. These are separate technical claims; neither can be inferred from Sony’s upscaling announcement.
Is Marvel’s Venom coming to PS6?
The game itself has not been officially confirmed in the reporting available as of October 7, 2026. Push Square reported on September 5 that leaker NateTheHate2 said the alleged game was “very much still in development upon last check,” while also saying he did not know when it would be announced. That is an attributed insider claim, not confirmation from Sony or Insomniac.

Push Square’s suggestion that the game might release across PS5 and PS6 was the outlet writer’s expectation, not a disclosed platform plan. Tom’s Hardware Italia likewise reported on September 8 that Sony and Insomniac had not confirmed the game or its destination platforms. Its discussion of a possible late-2027 release and PS6 launch remains speculative; reported details such as Eddie Brock being the protagonist are also unconfirmed.
What is confirmed, rumored, and unknown
| Claim | Status as of October 7, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Sony announced QSSR for PS5 | Confirmed by Sony’s October 1, 2026 announcement. |
| Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei were first QSSR games | Confirmed by Sony; the post said both were being patched that day with QSSR as an additional graphics option. |
| A Marvel’s Venom game is in development | Unconfirmed. September reporting attributes an “in development upon last check” claim to NateTheHate2; Sony and Insomniac have not officially confirmed the title. |
| Venom will launch on PS6, or on both PS5 and PS6 | Not established. Cross-generation and PS6 possibilities are speculation, not announced platform plans. |
| Venom will have path tracing or “PSSR 3” | Not established. Sony’s QSSR post names neither Venom nor either of those features for it. |
How to assess the claim
For now, “Marvel’s Venom is being prepared for PS6 with full-fledged path tracing and PSSR 3” should be treated as an unsupported headline claim, not a confirmed technical announcement. A reliable confirmation would need to establish three things independently: that the game exists, which platforms it will support, and which rendering or upscaling features it will include.

Earlier rumor coverage has been contradictory. Gameranx’s April 27, 2026 report documented conflicting claims about cancellation and whether the project might target PS5 or PS6; it also noted that Sony and Marvel had not announced the game. More recent reports do not turn those rumors into an official confirmation.
