Is Linux Right for Your Everyday Computer? Questions to Ask Before Switching

Linux may suit your daily computing needs if your essential apps, devices, and games are compatible. Here’s how to check—and try Ubuntu without installing it.

Linux can handle everyday computing, but whether it is right for your computer depends on the apps, devices, and games you rely on. Before replacing your current system, check those essentials and try Ubuntu from a USB drive: its live preview lets you use the desktop without making permanent changes to the computer.

What can you do on Linux day to day?

A Linux desktop can cover common tasks such as browsing, messaging, gaming, content creation, and software development. Canonical presents Ubuntu as a general-purpose desktop and names Firefox, Chrome, Discord, Steam, and OBS Studio among its example apps. These examples are a starting point, not a guarantee that a particular app’s every feature or workflow will be available.

Make a list of the software and file workflows you cannot do without. For each item, check the developer’s current Linux support. If an app is tied to a Windows or macOS desktop version, find out whether its vendor offers a Linux version or whether its browser version includes the features you need. Also check dependencies such as accessibility tools, plug-ins, and required file formats.

Ubuntu provides a graphical desktop, app catalog, and guided installation, so you can begin without making the command line your primary way of using the computer. Some troubleshooting or settings changes may still involve a terminal, and switching systems can mean learning unfamiliar tools and habits.

Will your computer and accessories work?

Hardware support depends on the exact computer and its components. Canonical’s Ubuntu certified hardware has been tested for Ubuntu; certification is useful evidence, but it does not establish compatibility for every accessory or setup. If your device is not listed, Canonical recommends trying Ubuntu.

A live preview is a practical way to check your own setup. Before installing, use it to test the things you depend on:

The preview uses open-source drivers only. A device that needs a proprietary driver may behave differently until that driver is installed or enabled. Check separately for hardware-specific requirements, including some NVIDIA graphics configurations, rather than assuming that a successful preview settles every driver question.

Will your games work?

Steam supports Linux, and Steam Play can run some Windows-only games on Linux. That does not mean every Windows game, launcher, or anti-cheat setup will work. Compatibility can vary by title and hardware, so check the operating-system and hardware requirements for each game you need before relying on Linux as your only system. Steam’s SteamOS page describes Steam’s Linux support; check current information for specific games because compatibility can change.

How can you try Linux without installing it?

Canonical’s Ubuntu Desktop documentation says, “If you aren’t sure, you can try Ubuntu Desktop without making any permanent changes on your computer: run it from a USB stick.” Its Try Ubuntu tutorial explains how to create boot media and start the preview.

  1. Get a USB flash drive. Ubuntu recommends one with at least 8 GB of capacity. You do not need to buy a new computer just to investigate Linux if you can try it on your current machine.
  2. Back up the drive. Creating bootable media erases the selected USB drive. Copy anything you want to keep elsewhere before you begin.
  3. Create the bootable USB. Follow Canonical’s tutorial and check the selected drive carefully before writing to it.
  4. Boot the computer from the USB and choose the try option. This runs Ubuntu from the drive so you can explore the desktop without installing it on the computer.
  5. Test real tasks. Open the apps and files you depend on and check the devices listed above. A desktop that looks familiar is not enough to confirm that your workflow works.

Which Linux distribution should you choose?

Ubuntu is one documented general-purpose option with a guided installation and live trial. The available evidence does not establish a universal winner among Ubuntu, Fedora, Linux Mint, or other distributions, so choose based on the requirements that matter to you rather than a blanket ranking.

Compare candidates against your own checklist:

  • Support for essential applications and file workflows
  • Compatibility with your exact computer and peripherals
  • Support for must-play games
  • Update and maintenance expectations
  • Documentation and help that suit your needs
  • Whether the live trial works acceptably on your hardware

These are decision criteria, not a measured comparison of distributions. Once you have a candidate, verify its current documentation and test it on your hardware.

When is Linux a good fit?

Linux is a reasonable everyday choice when your essential apps and devices work, your must-play games are compatible, and you are comfortable with the maintenance and learning involved. If a crucial app, accessory, or game remains uncertain, keep your current system in place while you investigate—starting with a live USB trial is less risky than committing to an installation.
