A Google Wallet state ID is not a nationwide substitute for a physical driver’s license or state ID. For air travel, the Wallet ID must be REAL ID-compliant and the checkpoint must support digital IDs. Carry your physical card for both situations.
Can TSA accept a state ID in Google Wallet?
Yes, but only at supported TSA checkpoints. Google says a state ID in Wallet can be used with TSA at supported airports; that does not mean every airport or checkpoint accepts it. Check the TSA acceptable identification page before departure, and confirm with your issuing state if needed.

For domestic checkpoint use, the Wallet state ID must be REAL ID-compliant. Google says a non-REAL-ID state ID in Wallet will not be accepted by TSA for this purpose. TSA’s checkpoint rules began requiring REAL ID-compliant identification, or another accepted credential, on May 7, 2025. See Google Wallet’s state ID guidance and TSA’s current identification requirements.

Will police accept a Google Wallet ID during a traffic stop?
There is no nationwide answer established by Google’s Wallet guidance. Its instructions describe use at supported TSA checkpoints and certain app-based identity or age checks; they do not say that officers must accept a Wallet ID during a traffic stop. Requirements and enforcement practices depend on the jurisdiction. Carry your physical driver’s license, and check your state motor-vehicle agency or relevant law-enforcement guidance for local rules.

Where can you add a state ID to Google Wallet?
Google’s support page lists Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Maryland, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, and Puerto Rico for this feature. Availability to add an ID is not the same as acceptance by every agency in that location, or support at every TSA checkpoint. Because supported locations and functions can change, verify the current list on Google’s Wallet state ID page.
Why should you still carry the physical card?
Google states: “A digital ID in Google Wallet is not a replacement for your physical ID.” The physical card is important if a checkpoint or officer does not accept the digital credential, or if you need identification somewhere that does not support it.

If you arrive at TSA without acceptable identification, TSA may ask you to complete identity verification using information such as your name and current address. If TSA confirms your identity, you may be allowed into the checkpoint, but additional screening may apply. Entry is not assured: TSA says you will not be allowed to enter if you refuse acceptable identification, decline identity verification, or cannot be verified. Check TSA’s guidance on acceptable identification rather than treating this process as a substitute for bringing ID.

No. Google describes a separate ID pass created using a US passport. Only that passport-based ID pass can be used at TSA security in supported airports, according to Google. It is not official identification or a replacement for physical documentation, and Google recommends checking eligibility with the requester. Do not assume that an ID pass works wherever a state ID is requested. Details are on Google’s ID pass guidance.
