Pausing delays updates that have not completed; it does not undo an upgrade already installed. If Windows 11 has upgraded to a new version and that version is causing trouble, use Go back if it is available. If the problem began after a smaller, recent update, use the uninstall option for that update instead.
Choose the right option for the update you have
First check whether the update is still pending or has already installed. Then identify whether the problem followed a full Windows version upgrade or a smaller update. In Windows, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history to review what was installed.

| Your situation | Use this option | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| An update has not completed, and you want to delay it | Pause updates | Temporarily stops updates; it does not reverse an installed upgrade. |
| A new Windows version is installed and is causing trouble | Settings > System > Recovery > Go back, if available | Returns to the previous Windows version, with some apps, drivers, and settings changes removed. |
| A recent smaller update is causing trouble | Uninstall that update from Update history | Removes a selected update, if Windows permits its removal. |
Microsoft describes feature updates as typically annual releases that add capabilities, while quality updates arrive more frequently and mainly contain smaller fixes and security updates. They are different remedies for different problems. See the Windows Update FAQ for Microsoft’s explanation of update types.
How do I pause Windows 11 updates?
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Pause updates, then use Pick a date to choose when the pause should end. The labels can vary with the interface version; use the wording shown on your PC.
Microsoft’s current guide allows pausing for up to 35 days from the current date. This is a temporary delay, not a permanent way to disable updates. When the pause ends, Windows checks for updates again, and may need to download and install them. You can also resume updates manually. Updates that might require a restart are held until the pause ends; pausing also cancels updates already in progress. See Microsoft’s instructions for pausing updates.

How do I go back to the previous version of Windows?
- Back up important files before starting recovery. If BitLocker is enabled, find your recovery key in case the recovery process asks for it.
- Open Settings > System > Recovery.
- If Go back is available, select it and follow the prompts.
Microsoft says Go back is available in most cases for 10 days after an upgrade. It keeps personal files, but removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and reverses settings changes. The option is not guaranteed to be available on every PC: Windows must still have the required previous-installation files, including the windows.old and $windows.~bt folders. Microsoft’s instructions also list removing user accounts added after the upgrade and having the USB drive used for the upgrade, if applicable, among the conditions to consider. Follow Microsoft’s Go back instructions for the current recovery prompts and requirements.
Do not delete the previous Windows installation while you may still want to roll back. Deleting it removes the windows.old folder, cannot be undone, and removes the ability to return to the previous version. Microsoft explains this in its guide to deleting the previous version of Windows.

How do I uninstall a recent Windows update?
Use this route for a problem linked to a recent smaller update rather than a full version upgrade. In Windows, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates, then choose the update to remove if it is listed and uninstallable. Some updates cannot be uninstalled. Microsoft also advises Windows 11 users to consider reinstalling their version of Windows first when appropriate; consult its Windows Update removal instructions before choosing a recovery route.
If Windows will not start or you cannot reach Settings, enter the Windows Recovery Environment and choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates. The available choices depend on the update and recovery environment. Removing a security update can leave the PC exposed to issues that update addressed, so do not remove one casually; contact Microsoft support or your organization’s IT team if you are unsure.

What if Go back is missing?
If Go back does not appear under Recovery, Windows is not offering the standard rollback option. The usual 10-day period may have passed, or the files needed for the previous installation may no longer be available. Do not try to recreate those files by deleting or changing system folders. Review Microsoft’s recovery options and choose an appropriate recovery route; back up files first, and have a BitLocker recovery key available if encryption is enabled.
Does a Windows 11 feature update need extra disk space?
Microsoft says a feature update typically needs 6–11 GB or more of free space, and more space is temporarily needed to support removal, typically for 10 days. These are typical storage needs, not a pause or rollback requirement. See Microsoft’s guidance on freeing space for updates.
