No. Japan is not shown to be building a giant solar ring around the Moon. LUNA RING is a proposal from Japanese construction company Shimizu Corporation: a belt of solar cells around the lunar equator that would send collected energy toward Earth. The concept dates back at least to a 2010 conference record, and the available sources do not establish a funded mission, government construction program, schedule, or operating system.
What is LUNA RING?
LUNA RING is Shimizu Corporation’s proposed system for generating solar power on the Moon and transmitting it to Earth. The company describes the idea as: “Generate power by installing a ring of solar power cells around the equator of moon.” That is a description of a concept, not a report that construction has begun. Shimizu Corporation’s LUNA RING concept page presents the system and its intended advantages.

The idea is not a newly announced construction project. A Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers conference record dated January 28, 2010 documents the initiative and describes microwave and laser transmission from a lunar solar-cell belt.

- Collect sunlight on the Moon. Solar cells would form a belt around the lunar equator.
- Move electricity to a transmission site. A cable along the lunar surface would carry power to the Moon’s Earth-facing side.
- Beam energy toward Earth. The transmission site would convert the electricity into a microwave or laser beam.
- Receive and use it on Earth. Earth-based facilities would capture the transmitted energy and convert it into electricity. Shimizu also mentions hydrogen production as a possible use.
That is the proposed chain from sunlight to usable energy; the cited material does not demonstrate an operating system or measured delivery to Earth.

How large is the concept?
Shimizu’s concept page gives an approximate lunar-equator belt length of 11,000 km, a belt width ranging from several kilometers to 400 km, and a microwave transmission antenna 20 km in diameter. These are company-stated concept dimensions, not installed measurements or independently validated engineering requirements. The page does not state a publication year. Why does Shimizu propose putting solar cells on the Moon?
Shimizu says a lunar installation could avoid terrestrial weather and generate power continuously, around the clock. These are claimed advantages of the design, not demonstrated performance. The proposal also calls for using lunar materials as construction inputs and having robots lead surface construction under remote control from Earth, with some work involving human presence. The cited sources do not show that these construction methods have been demonstrated as an integrated lunar operation.

- 750 Moon topographic locations

Compared with ordinary terrestrial solar power, the proposal changes where generation happens and how electricity reaches users. A lunar system would collect sunlight on the Moon and depend on a long-distance beam and receiving infrastructure on Earth; terrestrial solar systems collect energy on Earth and do not require that lunar transmission chain. The sources do not provide quantified output or a complete performance comparison between the two.

Is the project funded or under construction?
The corporate material describes LUNA RING as a proposal. The sources available here do not establish a Japanese government construction program, an approved budget, a funded mission, a construction schedule, or an operating installation. The 2010 conference record shows that the concept was documented by that date; it does not establish that a build was authorized or underway. Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers record via J-STAGE

- Solar-Powered Motion – No Wires or Batteries — This MOVA Globe rotates continuously using only ambient light and the Earth’s magnetic field. No fuss, no noise, no cables.
- Compact Display Piece with Stunning Presence — At 4.5 inches across, it fits perfectly on desks, nightstands, or bookshelves. A small globe that sparks big conversation.
- Premium Build with Seamless Movement — A fluid-suspended inner globe rotates within a clear acrylic outer shell, offering a smooth, almost magical visual experience.
- Inspire Curiosity and Wonder — Perfect for stargazers, space buffs, students, and science enthusiasts. A gift that celebrates Earth’s constant lunar companion.
Does “endless clean energy” mean the system is proven?
No. “Endless” is an aspirational description, not an engineering guarantee. Shimizu presents continuous generation as a design goal, but the cited material does not establish net power delivered to Earth, system reliability, cost, environmental impacts, or the practicality of building and maintaining the infrastructure. A corporate brochure discusses the idea in the context of a sustainable energy future, but it is not evidence of an operating power system.
