Researchers found green algae in a small lagoon inside a Chinstrap penguin guano stain at Hannah Point, Livingston Island. That striking observation does not show that guano-fed algae caused a measured amount of snowmelt. Dark guano and algae could each help snow absorb more sunlight, but the headline describes a plausible local interaction—not a demonstrated melt experiment.
What researchers actually observed
A 2023 field study at Hannah Point used UAV hyperspectral imagery to examine a Chinstrap penguin colony ecosystem. The researchers identified a small water lagoon covered by green algae within a penguin guano stain. Their work also built a spectral library spanning 400–2500 nm for five main vegetation communities, helping characterize the site’s vegetation and guano. It did not isolate the effect of guano-fed algae or measure how much snow the lagoon or algae melted. Román et al., 2023.

How guano and algae could affect snow
Two possible effects are relevant, but they are distinct. Guano supplies nutrients that can support nearby biological growth, and its dark material can make snow less reflective. Algae pigments can also darken snow. Darker surfaces absorb more solar energy than bright snow, which can favor melting. A 2024 paper discusses penguin droppings’ effect on snow albedo as background context; it is not a direct test of the algae-and-melt chain observed at Hannah Point. 2024 albedo discussion.

So the proposed chain—nutrients supporting algae, darker material reducing reflectivity, and greater solar absorption favoring melt—is physically plausible. The Hannah Point observation establishes that algae and guano occurred together at a small coastal feature; it does not establish that guano caused the algae to grow there or quantify either material’s contribution to melting.

What Antarctic-wide mapping adds
A 2020 study combined Sentinel-2 imagery and field campaigns to map green snow algae blooms along the Antarctic Peninsula. It counted 1,679 blooms covering 1.95 × 106 m2 seasonally, estimated total dry biomass of 1.3 × 103 tonnes, and found that 60% of mapped blooms were less than 5 km from a penguin colony. These are regional mapping estimates and a proximity result—not measurements of guano-caused melting. Being near a colony supports an association, but does not by itself prove what caused a bloom. Gray et al., 2020.
What guano chemistry studies show
A 2024 study sampled Gentoo and Chinstrap penguin colonies on Livingston Island in February 2022, then experimentally modelled trace-element release from guano into seawater and snowmelt water. It supports the point that guano-derived substances can enter nearby water. The paper refers to the Hannah Point algae observation, but it does not test whether those released elements caused algae growth or accelerated snowmelt. Ruiz-Gutiérrez et al., 2024.

How large is the effect?
The evidence here concerns a small coastal feature on Livingston Island and mapped blooms across the Antarctic Peninsula. It does not quantify a continent-wide amount of snowmelt attributable to penguin guano, nor does it show that penguins are a major driver of Antarctic ice loss. Local effects on snow reflectivity and biology should not be confused with changes to the continental ice sheet.
