NASA’s Curiosity rover successfully drilled the Martian rock nicknamed Campo Marte and collected powder for analysis. The mission’s May 28, 2026 update confirms that some sample was delivered to the rover’s CheMin instrument and describes plans to analyze portions with SAM—but it does not report what Campo Marte contains. NASA Science’s mission update confirms the collection and the analysis plan, not a final result.

What happened at Campo Marte?

Curiosity drilled Campo Marte after a previous attempt at a different rock, Atacama, ended with the rover lifting the block with its drill. After reviewing telemetry and images and assessing possible mitigations, the team judged another attempt in the area acceptable. It selected Campo Marte for its desired geological features and because it was significantly larger than Atacama.

This time, Curiosity successfully retracted the drill and collected rock powder. NASA’s update says the hole reached 28 millimeters (about 1.1 inches), compared with the team’s usual drilling depth of 35 millimeters (about 1.38 inches). The update does not establish why the hole was shallower, so the difference alone should not be read as evidence about the rock’s contents.

The mission team inspected small portions of powder dropped as a standard post-drilling check. NASA reports that one portion went to CheMin; its initial results helped the team plan work with SAM. The plan called for four portions for SAM, with another portion-drop test scheduled because the team was unsure whether enough sample would remain after the planned analysis.

How will Curiosity analyze the sample?

CheMin: identify minerals

CheMin, short for Chemistry and Mineralogy, analyzes the mineral composition of powdered rock. Its early findings on Campo Marte informed the team’s plan for SAM, but the May update does not give CheMin’s final results.

SAM: examine gases and chemical compounds

SAM—Sample Analysis at Mars—heats sample material to release gases for analysis and can also carry out selected wet-chemistry experiments. NASA Goddard’s SAM instrument fact sheet describes powder being placed in sample cups and heated in an oven at about 1,000°C (1,832°F). Gas chromatography separates molecules, while a quadrupole mass spectrometer helps identify them. These are descriptions of SAM’s capabilities, not reported Campo Marte findings.

Curiosity’s laboratories can work with small amounts: Abigail Fraeman, the mission’s deputy project scientist at JPL, wrote in the May 28 update that a pinch of no more than tens of milligrams can reveal detailed information about Martian rock composition. NASA said the team expected the planned SAM work might nearly deplete the Campo Marte sample, though the remaining amount was uncertain.

What could the results tell scientists?

First, the instruments can help characterize Campo Marte’s minerals and chemistry. When combined with the rock’s geological setting, those measurements can contribute to scientists’ understanding of Gale crater’s ancient environments and whether they could have been habitable.

Curiosity has detected organic molecules in other samples. In a separate report, NASA said an earlier sample called Mary Anning 3 contained 21 carbon-containing molecules, including seven detected on Mars for the first time. That result demonstrates what the rover’s instruments can detect; it is not a result from Campo Marte or a prediction of what its sample will contain. NASA’s report on Mary Anning 3 describes those findings and the role of SAM.

Would organic molecules prove life existed on Mars?

No. Organic molecules contain carbon, but they can form through nonbiological processes as well as through biological activity. A detection would be a chemical finding to investigate, not proof of life. Scientists would need to consider the minerals and geological context, how well compounds may have been preserved, isotope patterns and plausible nonbiological explanations.

Past Curiosity results illustrate why interpretation takes more than a single signal. In a 2022 report on a carbon-isotope signature from a different sample, NASA described multiple competing explanations. Christopher House, the study’s lead author, said, “All three explanations fit the data. We simply need more data to rule them in or out.” NASA’s report on that carbon signature discusses the alternatives. It does not concern Campo Marte.

The current status is therefore specific: Curiosity collected Campo Marte powder, delivered a portion to CheMin and planned further analysis with SAM. NASA’s May 28, 2026 update does not publish final composition results or an astrobiological interpretation. Until those are reported, claims about what is inside the rock—or whether it has any bearing on life—would be premature.
