Is It Safe to Leave a Fan Heater Running Overnight?

Turn a fan heater off before going to sleep. CPSC and USFA advise against leaving portable heaters operating while you sleep.

No—turn a portable fan heater off before you go to sleep. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says never to leave a portable heater operating while sleeping, and the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) advises turning space heaters off when going to bed. Neither agency identifies a timer, thermostat, tip-over switch, or automatic shutoff as an exception.

Why you should switch it off before bed

A fan heater is a portable space heater, so the official guidance for portable heaters applies. While you are asleep, you may not notice a heater being knocked over, a nearby item beginning to burn, or a problem with its cord or plug. The CPSC’s 2026 portable-heater safety poster says, “Never leave the heater operating while you are sleeping.” USFA likewise recommends turning space heaters off when going to bed in its heating fire-safety guidance.

These agencies address portable heaters broadly; the cited guidance does not distinguish fan heaters from other portable heater types. It also does not establish that a timer, thermostat, tip-over switch, or automatic shutoff makes overnight operation safe.

Fire statistics: what they do and do not show

U.S. fire data show why portable-heater precautions matter, but the figures cover portable heaters generally—not fan heaters alone—and are not a measure of any one person’s chance of a fire.

Source and period Reported estimate or finding
USFA, 2021 report covering U.S. residential fires reported in 2017–2019 An estimated average of 1,100 residential portable-heater fires per year, causing 65 deaths, 150 injuries, and $51 million in property loss annually. The report found portable heaters accounted for 41% of fatal residential heating fires and 3% of residential heating fires overall. Placing a heat source too close to combustible objects was the leading reported ignition factor (48%). Bedrooms were the most common location (34%); bedding was the leading item first ignited in bedroom fires (16%). USFA report: Portable Heater Fires in Residential Buildings (2017–2019)
CPSC, 2025 winter safety release reporting U.S. estimates for 2019–2021 Portable heaters, including electric space heaters, were involved in an estimated average of 1,600 fires, 70 deaths, and 160 injuries annually. This is a broader portable-heater estimate, not a fan-heater-only count. CPSC winter safety release

The two estimates use different periods and reporting scopes, so they should not be combined into a trend or treated as directly interchangeable.

How to use a fan heater more safely while you are awake

  • Keep it at least three feet from anything that can burn. Leave space on every side between the heater and bedding, curtains, clothes, paper, furniture, or other combustibles.
  • Place it on a stable, level surface. Position it where it is unlikely to be bumped or tipped over.
  • Plug it directly into a wall outlet. Do not use an extension cord or power strip, and do not run the heater’s cord under a rug or carpet.
  • Check the heater and its electrical parts. Do not use a heater, cord, or plug that is damaged. The CPSC advises contacting an authorized repair person if the cord or plug is hot; if the outlet itself is hot, contact a certified electrician.
  • Keep it away from water. Do not touch the heater when you are wet.
  • Check for recalls and follow the product instructions. Use the heater as its manufacturer directs.

For these precautions, see the CPSC’s seven portable-heater safety habits.

What to do at bedtime

  1. Switch the heater off before you go to bed. USFA also advises turning a space heater off when you leave the room.
  2. Do not treat a built-in timer or safety feature as permission to leave it operating while you sleep; the cited CPSC and USFA guidance gives no such exception.
