A low introductory price or a high advertised maximum speed alone does not tell you which plan is the better fit.
1. Find plans available at your exact address
Start with the FCC National Broadband Map. Search your service address to see providers that report availability there, the technologies they report offering, and their maximum advertised speeds. Fixed-service options shown can include fiber, cable, DSL, satellite, and fixed wireless.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The map is a discovery tool, not a price comparison or a guarantee that a provider will install service. Its availability information is provider-reported, and its speed figures are maximum advertised speeds rather than typical performance. The FCC provides a process to challenge availability information you believe is incorrect. Confirm serviceability, current offers, and terms with the provider for your address. (FCC map guidance; last updated May 15, 2025.)
2. Compare the full cost over your expected service period
Open the Broadband Facts label for each plan you are considering. Record the introductory monthly price and how long it lasts, the price afterward, recurring fees, one-time charges, and any contract term or early termination fee. Include equipment rental and installation or activation charges when they apply. Ask the provider for the total that applies at your address; location-dependent fees can make a nationwide advertised figure incomplete.

Use the same time horizon for every plan. For a plan with an introductory rate, a practical calculation is:
Expected cost over your period = introductory monthly price × months at that price + later monthly price × remaining months + applicable recurring fees + applicable one-time charges.
For example, if you expect to keep service for 24 months and the introductory rate lasts 12 months, count 12 months at the introductory rate and 12 at the later rate, then add applicable fees and one-time charges. Use the actual values from each plan’s label and provider quote; do not treat the example as a market price.

Also compare the price after the promotion and how clearly the provider states it. The FCC’s 2026 order retains core disclosures for pricing, introductory rates, data allowances, and performance metrics while changing some presentation rules. A provider may place a clearly identified icon or link near an advertised plan that leads directly to its label. For fees that vary by location, the label may show an aggregate maximum (“up to”) amount or an exact local total, so verify the amount for your service address. (FCC 2026 order.)
If you are comparing offers by phone, the FCC order says representatives must orally summarize the monthly price inclusive of monthly fees, any introductory rate and its duration, typical download and upload speeds, latency, data allowance, contract term, and early termination fees when applicable.
3. Compare typical performance, not just the headline speed
For each candidate, compare the label’s typical download speed, typical upload speed, and latency. These measures describe different parts of performance: downloading affects activities such as receiving video or files, uploading matters for sending files and video calls, and latency reflects delay in a connection’s response. The label metrics are more useful for comparing plans than the FCC map’s maximum advertised speed, but they are not a guarantee of the experience in a particular home.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Choose based on what people in your household do online and how many people and devices use the connection at once. Video calls, streaming, gaming, large uploads, and simultaneous use place different demands on a connection. There is no single speed recommendation that fits every household; compare the actual typical download and upload figures and consider which limitation would matter most to you.

AT&T’s explanation of its own labels notes that speeds can vary with location, device, and other factors. Treat that as provider guidance, not a universal quote or assurance about another provider’s service. (AT&T Broadband Facts label explainer; last updated August 26, 2026.)
4. Read the data allowance and overage terms
Find the specific plan’s data allowance on its label and check what happens if usage exceeds it. The relevant consequence or treatment should come from the plan disclosure and applicable terms, not from the plan name or a general “unlimited” claim in advertising. Compare whether a plan has an allowance and what the provider states about use beyond it before deciding whether a higher-priced alternative is worthwhile.

The FCC’s label framework retains disclosure of data allowances, and AT&T’s label explainer lists the allowance among the fields consumers can review. Neither a label category nor a marketing phrase supplies the terms for every plan; check the current disclosure for the exact offer. (FCC 2026 order; AT&T label explainer.)

Include the contract term and any early termination fee in your comparison, especially if you might move or switch before the term ends. The Broadband Facts label framework includes additional charges and terms; check the provider’s current label and offer details for the plan you are evaluating.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck whether a modem or router is included, rented for a monthly fee, or requires a separate purchase. If you already own equipment, confirm with the provider that its model works with the provider’s technology and the plan. A replacement may add upfront or recurring cost, but whether it is necessary depends on your hardware, service, and needs. The FCC has noted that choosing to rent or purchase equipment can increase monthly or upfront charges. (FCC 2022 order; AT&T label explainer.)

6. Put the plans side by side
Fill in this comparison using each provider’s current label and an address-specific quote. If a fee, term, or performance figure is not disclosed for a plan, ask the provider rather than assuming it is zero or identical to a competitor’s.
| What to compare | Plan A | Plan B |

| Equipment included, rental or purchase cost, compatibility | Confirm with provider | Confirm with provider |
Give more weight to the rows that match your priorities. A plan with the lowest first-month price may cost more over your intended period; a faster maximum on the FCC map does not establish better typical performance; and an allowance matters differently depending on your household’s use. The comparison is most reliable when each plan is checked for the same address and the same expected time with service.
