Is Human Violence Innate or Learned? What Research Can and Can’t Tell Us

Human violence is neither purely innate nor purely learned. Research supports a multi-factor explanation in which biological capacities and predispositions interact with development, relationships, immediate situations and cultural settings. A predisposition is not a destiny: evidence that genes, brain systems or hormones can influence aggressive behavior does not show that any individual is bound to become violent. Likewise, learning theories identify pathways by which behavior can be observed and reinforced, not a rule that exposure inevitably produces violence.

The strongest conclusion available from the research is therefore about interaction and prevention, not a percentage split between “innate” and “learned.”

What do “innate,” “learned,” aggression and violence mean?

“Innate” can mean an evolved capacity, a biological predisposition or a behavior that appears without particular teaching. Those are different claims. An evolved capacity may be shared by a species without being expressed in every person or circumstance. A predisposition can alter risk without determining an outcome. “Learned” can refer to observing other people, receiving rewards or punishments, absorbing social norms, or developing habits through repeated experience.

In this article, aggression means a broader class of behavior or action directed toward harming, confronting or dominating another person. Violence means the more serious use or threatened use of physical force. The boundary is not defined identically in every discipline, and the cited literature does not provide one universal cross-disciplinary definition. Findings about general or chronic physical aggression should not quietly be presented as findings about every form of serious violence.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That distinction matters because a study can be persuasive about one outcome and irrelevant to another. A model of chronic physical aggression in childhood, for example, cannot by itself explain political violence, intimate-partner violence or a one-time assault.

Why the “nature versus nurture” choice is too simple

Reviews and reports in psychology, neuroscience and the social sciences describe several levels of influence at once. Biology can affect sensitivity to threat, impulse control or arousal. Development determines how those capacities are regulated. Relationships and institutions provide models, rules and consequences. A situation can raise or lower the chance that an aggressive response is selected. Cultural norms and material conditions shape which responses are tolerated, rewarded or punished.

These are not competing explanations in which only one can be true. They describe different links in the same chain. A person may have a biological vulnerability, learn that intimidation achieves a goal, grow up in an environment where violence is normalized, and then encounter a situation that supplies a trigger. Removing any one link can change the outcome; the presence of one link does not make violence inevitable.

What biological research actually shows

Genes, brains, hormones and neurochemistry are legitimate research domains

Understanding and Preventing Violence, Volume 2: Biobehavioral Influences, a 1994 National Research Council volume, reviews genetic contributions, brain structure and functioning, hormonal and neurological interactions, neurochemistry and related biobehavioral topics. Its importance is that it establishes biological mechanisms as serious subjects of investigation. It does not identify a single “violence gene,” nor does it show that a particular biological feature makes an individual violent.

Biological findings generally concern probabilities, mechanisms or group differences. Moving from a group-level association to a prediction about one person requires evidence that the factor is sufficiently specific, measured reliably and independent of relevant social and developmental conditions. The cited review does not justify that leap.

Evolution can explain capacity without implying constant violence

The National Academies’ 2013 workshop summary, Contagion of Violence, discusses human capacity for both prosocial collective aggression and antisocial aggression while considering evolutionary, cultural and neurobiological influences together. Humans can coordinate force in defense of a group, but people also cooperate, care for one another and enforce norms against violence. An evolutionary account therefore helps explain why a capacity might exist; it does not predict that every person will express it, or that expression is unavoidable in modern settings.

The workshop summary is a synthesis of discussions, not a single decisive experiment. It is best used to show that evolutionary, cultural and neurobiological explanations can coexist.

What biology cannot establish on its own

  • It cannot establish that one gene, hormone, brain region or neurotransmitter is sufficient to cause violence.
  • It cannot provide a universal percentage for how much violence is biological.
  • It cannot turn a population-level risk factor into a certain prediction about an individual.
  • It cannot remove the effects of development, relationships, institutions and immediate circumstances.

How development and learning can shape aggressive behavior

Observation and reinforcement

A 1996 National Research Council chapter, “Causes and Consequences of Violence Against Women,” describes social-learning theory within the specific context of violence against women. People can observe behavior, notice its consequences and repeat it when the behavior appears to be reinforced. Reinforcement can be direct, such as obtaining compliance, or indirect, such as seeing another person gain status or avoid punishment.

This is a plausible pathway, not a mechanical rule. Seeing violence does not guarantee that an observer will copy it. People interpret what they see, differ in temperament and skills, encounter competing models and may face consequences that discourage imitation. Because the chapter addresses violence against women, its account should not be treated as a complete theory of all human violence.

Early relationships and social environments

The American Psychological Association’s Commission on Violence and Youth examined early childhood, relationships, institutions, social and economic conditions and learned attitudes as influences on youth violence in its report published January 1, 1993. The report emphasized that no particular exposure inevitably leads to violence. The same adversity can produce different outcomes depending on protective relationships, expectations, opportunities and the responses available to a young person.

The report is a historical synthesis rather than a current systematic review, so its value here is the interaction it describes: development unfolds inside social environments. It should not be read as evidence that any single childhood experience has a fixed effect.

Chronic physical aggression develops over time

The 2018 Annual Review of Psychology article “Developmental Origins of Chronic Physical Aggression: A Bio-Psycho-Social Model for the Next Generation of Preventive Interventions” explicitly uses a bio-psycho-social model. Its subject is chronic physical aggression, not every form of violence. The model directs attention to developmental trajectories: biological characteristics, psychological processes and social conditions can accumulate, interact and change over time.

This developmental view also explains why early risk is not destiny. Skills, relationships, expectations and environments can change, and prevention can target more than one pathway.

How situations and personal factors interact

Craig A. Anderson and Brad J. Bushman’s 2002 review, “Human Aggression,” presents the General Aggression Model (GAM) as a framework in which person-related and situational factors influence cognition, affect and arousal in an immediate episode. Person-related factors can include learned scripts, traits or past experiences; situational factors can include provocation, perceived threat or cues associated with aggression. The resulting thoughts, feelings and physiological arousal influence appraisal and action.

GAM is a theoretical framework reviewed in 2002, not a final consensus that ends debate. Its practical contribution is to show why the same person may act differently in different circumstances and why the same event may affect different people differently. It also incorporates social-learning ideas rather than treating biology and learning as mutually exclusive.

How the main explanatory approaches differ

Approach Level of explanation Scope in the cited work What the evidence supports What it does not establish
Biobehavioral research Genes, brain function, hormones, neurology and neurochemistry Violence-related behavior in a broad research review Biological mechanisms and predispositions warrant investigation Any single biological cause or individual certainty
Evolutionary and cultural account Species-level capacities and social organization Prosocial collective aggression and antisocial aggression Human capacities can have evolutionary, cultural and neurobiological influences together That humans are inevitably violent
Social learning Observation, consequences and reinforcement Violence against women in the 1996 chapter Observed behavior and reinforcement can help sustain behavior A complete theory of all violence or an inevitable copying effect
Developmental bio-psycho-social model Changes across childhood and later development Chronic physical aggression Biological, psychological and social factors can interact over time An explanation of every form of violence
General Aggression Model Person and situation during an episode General aggression theories Cognition, affect and arousal help connect factors to immediate action A settled, universally accepted causal model

What research can tell us with reasonable confidence

  • Violence has multiple contributors. The cited reviews and reports converge on biological, developmental, interpersonal, situational and cultural influences rather than a single source.
  • Capacity is different from inevitability. Biological or evolutionary evidence can support a capacity or predisposition without proving that a person will act violently.
  • Learning provides identifiable pathways. Observation, perceived rewards and consequences can shape behavior, but learning operates alongside temperament, relationships and context.
  • Risk is changeable. The APA Commission on Violence and Youth concluded that violence is not uncontrollable or inevitable and identified opportunities for effective intervention with young people.
  • Scope matters. Evidence about youth violence, violence against women, chronic physical aggression or general aggression should be labeled accordingly.

What research cannot tell us from these sources

  • No universal innate-versus-learned percentage. The cited sources do not provide directly comparable measurements that could yield a defensible split.
  • No single cause that predicts an individual. Group associations do not supply a personal verdict without information about development, circumstances and protective factors.
  • No one definition that resolves every debate. Aggression and violence are used differently across disciplines, so conclusions must preserve the outcome actually studied.
  • No guarantee that a prevention program works everywhere. The APA Commission’s conclusion supports the possibility of intervention, not a promise that any specific program will succeed in every setting.

How to evaluate a claim that violence is “natural” or “learned”

  1. Identify the outcome. Ask whether the evidence concerns general aggression, chronic physical aggression, youth violence, violence against women or serious physical violence.
  2. Locate the level of explanation. Is the claim about biology, individual development, relationships, a situation or wider institutions and culture?
  3. Separate contribution from sufficiency. A factor that raises risk is not necessarily enough to produce violence.
  4. Check the population and setting. Findings from children, adults, couples or groups cannot automatically be generalized to everyone.
  5. Look for interaction. Strong explanations specify how a person-related factor and a situation, relationship or learned norm combine.
  6. Ask what would change the outcome. If a theory leaves no room for protective relationships, new skills or changed circumstances, it is making a stronger claim than these sources support.

What this means for prevention

The interaction model points toward prevention at several levels rather than a search for one biological switch. Developmental work can support children’s regulation and social skills; families, schools and institutions can change the models and consequences surrounding behavior; and communities can reduce situations in which intimidation or force is rewarded. The evidence base summarized here does not identify one universally effective program, so interventions must be evaluated in the population and setting where they are used.

The APA Commission on Violence and Youth stated: “The Commission overwhelmingly concluded, on the basis of the body of psychological research on violence, that violence is not a random, uncontrollable, or inevitable occurrence.” This sentence appears in the commission’s report published January 1, 1993. It is a conclusion about the body of psychological research reviewed by that expert commission, not a claim that every violent act can be predicted or prevented.

Further reading for the major theories

Human Aggression and Violence: Causes, Manifestations, and Consequences, edited by Phillip R. Shaver and Mario Mikulincer, is a 422-page hardcover published in August 2010. The publisher’s listing describes coverage of major theoretical perspectives and genetic, environmental, interpersonal and cultural determinants. It is useful background to the field, but as a 2010 edited collection it should not be treated as a current evidence update.
