Short answer (September 28, 2026): Google’s Gemini API pricing page lists model gemini-2.5-pro with $0 Standard Free Tier input and output prices. That does not mean unlimited requests or a guaranteed quota. Google’s current Gemini Apps help documentation covers Gemini 3 models and does not list Gemini 2.5 Pro, so consumer-app availability for 2.5 Pro is not confirmed by that documentation.
Is Gemini 2.5 Pro free?
It depends on which Google product you mean. For the Gemini API, Google currently displays Gemini 2.5 Pro as free on the Standard Free Tier for both input and output. The same pricing documentation says Free Tier access is limited to eligible models and remains subject to model-specific rate limits. Google does not publish a guaranteed request count for every account in the reviewed pricing table.

The Gemini consumer app is a separate service with separate model availability and usage limits. Its current help page lists Gemini 3 access and subscription multipliers, but not Gemini 2.5 Pro. That omission does not prove that every account has lost access; it means the reviewed official page does not confirm 2.5 Pro availability in the app.
Gemini API and AI Studio: what “free” means

On the Gemini Developer API pricing page, gemini-2.5-pro appears with free Standard Tier input and output pricing. “Free” here describes the listed price for that tier, not unlimited capacity, permanent access, or a fixed daily allowance.

Limits are account- and model-dependent
Google applies rate limits to Free Tier usage. The documentation does not establish that all accounts receive the same quota, nor does it provide a universal number of prompts or tokens for Gemini 2.5 Pro. Limits can change as Google adjusts availability. Treat any number posted in an older guide or shown for another model as inapplicable unless your current project and model documentation show it.
How to check your own API access
- Open the current Gemini API pricing documentation and confirm that
gemini-2.5-prois still listed under Standard Free Tier. - In the Google AI developer tooling you use, select the model ID
gemini-2.5-prorather than assuming a similarly named model is equivalent. - Check the project’s quota or rate-limit information and monitor the response if a request is rejected for limit, eligibility, or billing reasons.
- Review the project billing page before enabling a paid tier; do not assume that a free-price row removes the need for billing setup for other features or higher limits.
Is Gemini 2.5 Pro free in Google AI Studio?
Google’s pricing documentation applies to Gemini API usage, which is the relevant route for developer projects and AI Studio-style experimentation. It currently shows free Standard Tier prices for the 2.5 Pro model. The documentation does not promise that every Google account, project, or interface will expose the model at all times. If the model is absent from your selector or requests return an eligibility error, follow the model and project status shown in your account rather than relying on an old tutorial.

Is Gemini 2.5 Pro free in the Gemini app?
Do not equate API pricing with the consumer Gemini app. Google’s current Gemini Apps limits and upgrades page documents Gemini 3 model access and plan-based limits; it does not list Gemini 2.5 Pro. Therefore, the official material reviewed here cannot confirm current 2.5 Pro access in the app, whether free or paid.

What are the free limits for Gemini 2.5 Pro?
There is no single current, official prompt number established in the cited pricing material. The reliable statement is that Standard Free Tier use is rate-limited and model-specific. A free-price listing should be read as “no listed per-token charge while eligible,” not “unlimited use.”
| Access route | What Google’s current documentation establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini API / developer projects | gemini-2.5-pro is listed with free Standard Tier input and output prices; Free Tier access is subject to model-specific limits. Pricing |
No universal request count or identical quota for every account. |
| Consumer Gemini app | The current help page documents Gemini 3 models and plan-based usage limits. Gemini Apps limits | Whether any accounts currently have Gemini 2.5 Pro in the app. |
| Paid API tier | Billing setup expands API access and rate limits; exact limits vary. Billing documentation | A paid tier does not establish consumer-app access to 2.5 Pro. |
What changes when you pay?
Paid Gemini API tier
Google’s billing documentation explains that paid API access requires billing setup and can provide higher limits. For accounts that require prepayment, Google lists a minimum prepayment of $5 (or the equivalent in the account’s currency); some accounts may instead be offered postpay or assigned to it during rollout.

The current API pricing page lists these Standard Paid Tier rates for Gemini 2.5 Pro:
| Prompt size | Input | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 200,000 tokens | $1.25 per million tokens | $10 per million tokens |
| More than 200,000 tokens | $2.50 per million tokens | $15 per million tokens |
These are paid API prices, not Gemini app subscription prices. Google also states that paid-tier prompts and responses are not used to improve Google products, while the pricing table marks Free Tier usage as used to improve products. Consider that data-use distinction when sending sensitive material through the API. See the current pricing table.

Gemini app subscriptions
Consumer AI subscriptions affect app usage limits, not API pricing. Google’s current help page lists the following relative limits:
| App access level | Listed limit relative to standard |
|---|---|
| No AI plan | Standard limit |
| AI Plus | 2× the standard limit |
| AI Pro | 4× the standard limit |
Those are multipliers, not fixed prompt counts, and Google cautions that limits and availability may change. Details of current consumer plans are maintained on Google’s subscription page.

Google’s 2025 announcements describe a changing rollout rather than a permanent quota. In an April 4, 2025 post, Google Senior Product Manager Logan Kilpatrick wrote: “The experimental version of Gemini 2.5 Pro remains available for free with lower rate limits.” That statement was historical, not a promise of today’s allowance.

On December 7, 2025, Kilpatrick wrote in the Google AI Developers Forum: “Yes, we turned down the 2.5 Pro free limits which were originally only supposed to be available for a single weekend.” That later statement explains why older screenshots or guides may show more generous access. The current pricing page can still display free Standard Tier prices while actual limits are reduced, changed, or unavailable to a particular project.
How to decide which answer applies to you
- Using an API key or developer project: consult the current model listing, pricing row, and project quota. The listed free price applies only while your project is eligible and within limits.
- Using gemini.google.com: check the model selector and the limits shown for your account. Do not infer app access from API pricing.
- Need more capacity: compare paid API billing with an app AI plan; they are separate products with separate limits.
- Handling confidential data: review Google’s Free Tier versus Paid Tier data-use terms before submitting it.
The Bottom Line
Gemini 2.5 Pro is currently shown as free for eligible Standard Tier Gemini API usage, but Google does not promise unlimited or uniform quotas. Current Gemini app documentation does not confirm 2.5 Pro access, so check the model and limits displayed for your own route and account.
