For OpenAI’s own Mac experience, the current ChatGPT macOS app is the main option to evaluate. It combines Chat, Work, and Codex, and OpenAI recommends it for agentic features and Codex. ChatGPT Classic—the former Mac client—remains supported, while Apple Intelligence offers a separate way to invoke ChatGPT from Siri, Writing Tools, and visual intelligence. The right choice depends on your Mac’s compatibility and whether you want a standalone window, in-app context, or system-wide Apple features.

OpenAI’s documentation does not establish a market-wide winner for speed, accuracy, price, privacy, or feature completeness versus third-party Mac clients. Choose by workflow rather than by an unsupported performance ranking.
1. Current ChatGPT for Mac: the default choice for desktop work
OpenAI’s current desktop app combines Chat, Work, and Codex. Its July 9, 2026 release-note update describes the newer app as the one to use for agentic features and Codex. The former Mac app is now called ChatGPT Classic and continues to be supported.
Compatibility requirements
OpenAI states that the macOS app requires macOS 14 and either Apple Silicon (M1 or better) or an Intel processor. OpenAI also says it will not release a version compatible with older operating systems. Check the current requirements page immediately before installing, because operating-system support can change.

The download page detects whether your Mac uses Apple Silicon or Intel and supplies the corresponding installer. After installation, the app’s Chat Bar opens with Option-Space; you can change that shortcut in the app’s keyboard-shortcut settings.
What makes the standalone app useful
- Dedicated workspace: Keep ChatGPT in its own desktop window instead of relying on a browser tab.
- Work with Apps: Give ChatGPT recognized content from supported editors, coding tools, and terminals as conversation context.
- Codex and agentic features: Use the newer desktop app when those OpenAI features are your reason for installing it.
- Fast invocation: Bring up the Chat Bar from any supported desktop workflow with Option-Space.
2. Work with Apps: context from what is open on your Mac
Work with Apps lets ChatGPT use content from an active supported application as context. Current OpenAI documentation lists text editors such as Apple Notes, Notion, TextEdit, and Quip; coding applications including Xcode, Script Editor, VS Code and specified forks, and JetBrains IDEs; and terminals including Terminal, iTerm, Warp, and Prompt. The list can change, so check Manage Apps in ChatGPT for the current compatibility list.

How context is selected
The Chat Bar displays a banner identifying the app ChatGPT is working with and the content it recognizes. OpenAI says it includes the last 200 lines of open panes, with selected text and neighboring context when you make a selection, subject to a truncation limit. Check this banner before sending a prompt if the contents of the conversation matter.
Reading versus editing
Supported-app content can be supplied as context, but editing is narrower. OpenAI states that editing is available only with IDEs. In an IDE, ChatGPT can propose code changes for review and application; the documentation also describes an automatic-apply option. A notes app, text editor, or terminal may provide readable context without offering the same direct-edit workflow.
Permissions and setup
- Most supported apps require macOS Accessibility permission so ChatGPT can read their recognized content.
- VS Code requires OpenAI’s “ChatGPT – Work with Code on macOS” extension.
- You can disable Work with Apps in ChatGPT settings.
- Enterprise administrators can disable Work with Apps for workspace members.
Data and chat-history considerations
OpenAI says content included from other apps becomes part of chat history and may be used to improve models according to your account’s data-control settings. Temporary Chat is described as not being saved in the account or used to improve models. Business-plan data is handled separately in OpenAI’s documentation. Review the current policy and workspace settings for your account type before sending confidential material.

3. ChatGPT Classic: when keeping the older client makes sense
ChatGPT Classic is OpenAI’s name for the previous Mac app, and OpenAI says it remains supported. It can be a reasonable choice if you already use it and do not need the newer app’s agentic features or Codex. However, support and feature boundaries are product details that can change; verify the current position before deciding to stay on Classic.
If you want the current combination of Chat, Work, and Codex, install the newer ChatGPT macOS app instead. The two names describe different OpenAI desktop clients, not two modes inside one application.

4. ChatGPT with Apple Intelligence: best for system-wide Apple actions
Apple Intelligence is a separate access route. On a Mac, set it up at System Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT > Set Up. OpenAI describes ChatGPT integration with Siri, Writing Tools, image creation in Compose, and visual intelligence.

- Ask Siri to send a question, document, or photo to ChatGPT after Siri asks for confirmation.
- Use ChatGPT from Writing Tools while working in supported Apple experiences.
- Use image tools in Compose and visual intelligence where Apple provides them.
You can use these Apple integrations without signing in to a ChatGPT account. Connecting an account can provide additional features and save conversations. Apple Intelligence therefore complements the standalone app rather than replacing it: it is convenient for system actions, while the desktop app supplies its own window, Chat Bar, Work with Apps, and Codex environment.

Which ChatGPT Mac option should you choose?
Choose the current ChatGPT macOS app if…
- You want a dedicated ChatGPT desktop window.
- You need the documented Work with Apps workflow.
- You want OpenAI’s current agentic features or Codex.
- Your Mac meets the macOS 14 and processor requirements.
Keep ChatGPT Classic if…
- You already rely on the previous client.
- You do not need the newer app’s agentic features or Codex.
- You have confirmed that its current support status meets your needs.
Use Apple Intelligence if…
- You want ChatGPT inside Siri, Writing Tools, Compose, or visual intelligence.
- You prefer system-level actions over a separate ChatGPT window.
- You want the option to use the integration without signing in, or to connect an account for saved conversations and additional features.
Check Work with Apps first if…
- Your main use case involves a particular editor, IDE, notes app, or terminal.
- You need direct code edits; OpenAI documents that capability for IDEs only.
- Your organization controls Accessibility permissions, extensions, or ChatGPT workspace settings.
A practical setup checklist
- Open About This Mac and confirm macOS 14 or later plus an Intel or M1-and-newer processor.
- Download the current installer from OpenAI’s ChatGPT download page; use the installer offered for your Mac’s processor.
- Launch ChatGPT and test Option-Space to open the Chat Bar. Change the shortcut in keyboard-shortcut settings if it conflicts with another tool.
- Open Manage Apps and check whether your editor, IDE, notes app, or terminal is supported.
- Grant macOS Accessibility permission when prompted. For VS Code, install the required OpenAI extension.
- Before sending a prompt, read the Chat Bar banner to confirm which app and text ChatGPT recognizes.
- If you use Apple Intelligence instead or as well, go to System Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT > Set Up and choose whether to connect your account.
- Review ChatGPT data controls and any organization policy before sharing sensitive app content.
What this comparison cannot establish
The available OpenAI documentation describes supported products and workflows, not independent benchmarks. It does not prove that one option is faster, more accurate, cheaper, more private, or better than unrelated third-party Mac clients. Those conclusions would require comparable testing and current pricing and policy data. For most readers, compatibility and workflow integration are the defensible deciding factors: standalone desktop work points to the current app, legacy continuity to ChatGPT Classic, and Siri or Writing Tools access to Apple Intelligence.
