ChatGPT is not intended for children under 13. OpenAI says users aged 13 to 18 must have parental consent, and that its answers may not be appropriate for every audience. For teenagers, age-based protections and parental controls can reduce some exposure to dangerous or explicit material, but they are not a substitute for supervision, family rules, or professional help.
A 12-year-old should not have an independent ChatGPT account. A 14-year-old may use it under OpenAI’s stated consent requirement, subject to local law and the service’s current terms. The safest approach is supervised use, minimal personal disclosure, guided learning, and a clear rule that a human—not a chatbot—handles crises and high-stakes decisions.

What OpenAI’s age policy means
OpenAI’s Help Center states: “ChatGPT is not meant for children under 13, and we require that children ages 13 to 18 obtain parental consent before using ChatGPT.” That is the service’s stated age and consent policy, not a universal statement of local law. Parents should also check rules that apply in their country, school, or account type.

Children under 13
Do not create or permit an independent child account below the stated minimum age. In education settings that involve under-13 children, OpenAI says the actual interaction with ChatGPT must be conducted by an adult. An adult can use the tool to prepare material or demonstrate it, while the child asks questions and receives explanations through that adult.

Teenagers aged 13 to 18
Teen use requires parental consent under OpenAI’s policy. Consent does not make every answer suitable: the company warns that outputs may not be appropriate for every audience. Parents remain responsible for deciding whether a particular use—homework, creative writing, emotional support, or general questions—is suitable for their child.
What protections are available for teens
OpenAI has added several layers intended to reduce risk for users identified as minors. Their availability, behavior, and labels can change, so treat them as safety aids rather than guarantees.
Linked parental controls
A parent or guardian can connect an account after the teen accepts an invitation. The linked controls can:
- Set quiet hours.
- Turn voice conversations off.
- Disable memory.
- Remove image-generation access.
- Send limited safety notifications.
These settings give families control over selected features and timing. They do not provide a complete transcript-based monitoring service, and a notification is not guaranteed for every concerning conversation.

Age-prediction protections
OpenAI’s age-prediction system applies additional protections when it estimates that an account belongs to someone under 18. The protections target graphic violence, risky viral challenges, sexual or romantic roleplay, self-harm depictions, and extreme beauty or unhealthy-diet content. OpenAI says that when age information is incomplete, it defaults to a safer experience.
An estimate can be wrong or incomplete, however. Parents should not assume that an account has received every minor-specific restriction simply because the user is a teenager.
The teen-focused experience
OpenAI describes a ChatGPT for Teens experience for users identified as 13–17 or otherwise under 18. It adds Study Mode, homework reminders, quizzes, break reminders, and cues that identify ChatGPT as AI. The design goal is guided learning rather than simply returning an answer, but the feature cannot prevent a teenager from seeking shortcuts or using another conversation in an unhelpful way.

How the main risks affect children
Confidently wrong or unsafe answers
ChatGPT can produce fluent, confident text that is incorrect, incomplete, or unsuitable for a child’s circumstances. A child should not treat it as a doctor, therapist, emergency service, lawyer, or sole authority for school facts. For health, medication, abuse, threats, or other high-stakes questions, the answer is a prompt to involve a qualified person—not a final decision.

Self-harm, sexual, violent, and eating-disorder material
OpenAI identifies these areas as requiring stronger protections for teens. That acknowledgement matters: safeguards are designed to reduce exposure because the underlying risks are real. A refusal or warning can also fail, be misunderstood, or appear in a different conversation. Keep an adult involved whenever a child asks about self-harm, suicide, abuse, sexual situations, dangerous challenges, violence, starvation, purging, or extreme weight loss.
Emotional overreliance and treating the bot as a person
A fluent chatbot can feel like a friend, confidant, or always-available listener. The Associated Press reported that Common Sense Media’s 2025 findings showed more than 70% of U.S. teens use AI chatbots for companionship and half use AI companions regularly. Those figures describe reported use among U.S. teens, not a measure of every child’s behavior, but they show why families should discuss boundaries before a problem appears.
ChatGPT does not have human judgment, responsibility, or a continuing personal relationship. A teenager’s trusted adults, friends, clinician, teacher, and community should remain primary. Watch for withdrawal from people, secrecy about conversations, distress when access is limited, or statements that the chatbot understands them better than anyone else.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPrivacy and oversharing
Children may type names, precise locations, school identifiers, health information, family conflicts, passwords, intimate images, or another person’s private details without recognizing the consequences. Teach a data-minimization rule: if a detail would be unsafe to post publicly or hand to an unknown person, do not put it into a chatbot.

Review memory and other data settings together. Disabling memory can reduce persistent personalization, while turning off voice or image generation may reduce the kinds of sensitive material a child can submit. These choices are risk-reduction measures, not a promise that no data is retained or processed; consult the current account privacy information for the applicable settings.
Bypassing safeguards and false reassurance
Independent testing indicates that intended protections do not always match observed behavior. Common Sense Media’s Youth AI Safety Institute tested more than 4,000 prompts on accounts registered to 13–17-year-olds and, as reported by Axios in 2026, found that more than one in four opportunities to refer a user in crisis were missed. The report also said some parent-linked accounts did not trigger alerts during prolonged high-risk conversations. OpenAI disputed parts of the methodology and said some tests occurred before parental linking had completed.
The practical conclusion is narrow but important: a parent-linked account and an alert system can help, yet a missed alert is possible. Do not use the presence of controls as proof that a teen is being continuously monitored.

Study Mode and quizzes are intended to encourage step-by-step reasoning, but a teenager can still ask for a completed solution or copy a response. AP and Axios reporting describe this continuing shortcut risk. Require the student to explain the reasoning in their own words, check important facts against a teacher, textbook, or official source, and submit only original work permitted by the school’s rules.

Choosing an appropriate use model
The safest arrangement depends on the child’s age, maturity, purpose, and access to a trusted adult. These are distinct models rather than guarantees of safety.
| Use model | Eligibility and consent | Protections and controls | Learning and crisis limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary ChatGPT use | Not intended for under-13 users; ages 13–18 require parental consent under OpenAI’s policy. | May not include the teen-specific experience; the available material does not establish a universal control or alert configuration. | Can answer questions, but may be wrong, unsafe, or tempting to copy; it is not professional or emergency support. |
| Teen-focused experience | For users identified as 13–17 or under 18; parental consent still applies to 13–18 users. | Age-based protections, AI-identification cues, Study Mode, quizzes, homework and break reminders; exact rollout and behavior can change. | Guides learning more than a plain answer, but cannot eliminate shortcuts or replace a teacher, clinician, or trusted adult. |
| Supervised educational use | For under-13 education, an adult conducts the actual interaction; for teens, an adult remains actively involved. | Adult sees the prompts and context, sets the task, and can stop the session; no control is described as foolproof. | Best for demonstrations, explanations, and checking reasoning while keeping human judgment in the loop. |
How to set up safer teen use
- Confirm age and consent. Do not work around the minimum age. For a 13–18-year-old, obtain parental consent and explain what that consent covers.
- Complete the parent link. Use the parental-controls invitation flow and wait until the teen accepts and linking is complete. A partially completed link should not be treated as active supervision.
- Choose restrictive defaults. Turn on quiet hours. Consider disabling memory, voice, and image generation unless the family has a specific, understood reason to keep each feature enabled.
- Write the privacy rule down. The teen should never share passwords, precise location, school identifiers, medical records, intimate images, or another person’s private information.
- Set the human-in-the-loop rule. Any question involving self-harm, abuse, threats, medication, eating disorders, sexual situations, or immediate danger goes to a trusted adult, clinician, school counselor, or emergency service. If someone may be in immediate danger, contact local emergency services rather than waiting for a chatbot response.
- Use guided learning. Choose Study Mode or an equivalent step-by-step approach for schoolwork. Ask the teen to show the prompt, identify what the answer assumes, and explain the result without copying it.
- Agree on time boundaries. Preserve sleep, exercise, offline friendships, and family interaction. Break reminders may help, but parents set the routine and decide when access ends.
- Review use through conversation. Ask the teen to demonstrate how they check an answer, what they do when a response feels alarming, and which information they refuse to share. Treat alerts as backup signals, not as a substitute for these conversations.
What to do when ChatGPT gives dangerous advice
If the issue is factual or medical
Stop and verify the claim with a teacher, official health information, pharmacist, clinician, or other qualified professional. Do not let a child act on dosage, diagnosis, treatment, or nutrition instructions generated by a chatbot.
If the child mentions self-harm or suicide
Stay with the child, listen without arguing, and involve a trusted adult or mental-health professional immediately. If there is imminent danger, contact local emergency services. A safety notification from ChatGPT, if one appears, is supplementary; it is not a crisis response team.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the content is sexual, abusive, or threatening
Preserve relevant information only when doing so is safe, stop the conversation, and involve a parent or guardian and the appropriate professional, school safeguarding lead, or authorities. Do not ask the child to keep the matter secret or to negotiate with a threatening person through the chatbot.
Can ChatGPT replace a therapist or tutor?
No. ChatGPT can help brainstorm, explain a concept, generate practice questions, or provide a starting point for a conversation. It cannot assess a child’s mental state, maintain clinical responsibility, guarantee confidentiality, or know whether advice fits the child’s medical, family, or school context.
For tutoring, require checking and explanation. For emotional distress, use a human relationship and qualified care. The more consequential the decision, the less appropriate it is to rely on an unsupervised chatbot answer.
Questions parents should settle before enabling access
- What exact purpose will the teen use it for: study, coding, writing, or something else?
- Which features are disabled, and what would justify turning one back on?
- What information is never entered?
- Which adult will respond if a conversation becomes frightening or urgent?
- How will the teen show the reasoning behind schoolwork?
- What sleep, device, and offline-activity boundaries apply?
Safeguards, age prediction, parental-control settings, and teen-product behavior can change. Recheck the current OpenAI account information periodically, and update family rules when the service or the child’s circumstances change.
