Pause before acting. An AI health assistant can produce a fluent answer that is wrong, incomplete or unsafe. Do not use it to decide whether to seek care, change a medicine or begin treatment. Save the response, write down your symptoms and medicines, and check the advice with a qualified health professional. If symptoms are severe, rapidly worsening or may need immediate attention, use your local urgent-care or emergency route instead of waiting for another AI reply.
Why a confident AI answer is not medical confirmation
Large language models generate text by predicting plausible language from patterns in their training and instructions. They do not examine you, independently verify every claim or assume responsibility for a clinical decision. The World Health Organization warns that “LLMs generate responses that can appear authoritative and plausible to an end user; however, these responses may be completely incorrect or contain serious errors, especially for health-related responses.” (WHO, 16 May 2023.)

That warning applies even when an answer sounds personalized, cites medical terms or gives a precise dose. A system may misunderstand what you typed, miss an important symptom, rely on outdated information or combine facts that do not apply to your age, pregnancy status, allergies, medicines or conditions. A polished explanation is therefore a reason to check the advice, not proof that it is safe.

First response: stop and classify the decision
Do not follow a confusing recommendation while you are still trying to work out what it means. This is particularly important if the answer tells you to alter a prescription, take more or less of a medicine, delay professional care, start a treatment, or reassure yourself that a symptom is harmless.

Use a two-route decision
| Situation | Next route | What to do now |
|---|---|---|
| The question is not time-critical, but the answer could affect treatment or medication | Prompt contact with a clinician or pharmacist | Do not make the change until a qualified professional has clarified it. Share the exact AI response and your relevant health information. |
| Symptoms are severe, worsening, or may need immediate attention | Local urgent-care or emergency service | Use the service for your location. Do not wait for another chatbot response or spend time trying to make the AI explain itself. |
| You are unsure which category applies | Choose a human clinical advice route | Tell the service that an AI answer has left you uncertain and describe the symptoms, timing and medicines involved. |
There is no universal symptom list or emergency number that fits every country and circumstance. Location, age, existing conditions and how quickly symptoms are changing all matter. If you think there may be immediate danger, follow your local emergency instructions.
Step-by-step: verify the advice with a professional
- Preserve the context. Save or copy the conversation, including your original question, the assistant’s answer, warnings, cited sources and the date. If the system produced a chart or dose schedule, keep that too.
- Write a short symptom account. Note what you feel, when it began, whether it is getting better or worse, and anything that triggered it. Use ordinary words; do not rewrite symptoms to match the AI’s suggested diagnosis.
- List medicines and relevant conditions. Include prescription and over-the-counter medicines, supplements, allergies, pregnancy or breastfeeding where relevant, and conditions your clinician already knows about. The U.S. Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology recommends checking health-record information such as symptoms and medicines when reviewing your information (ONC, “Check It”).
- Contact the right professional. A prescribing clinician is appropriate for a prescription change; a pharmacist can clarify many medication questions; a primary-care or urgent-care service can assess symptoms. Follow the service’s instructions for phone, video or written consultations.
- State the uncertainty plainly. Say, “An AI assistant told me [brief summary], but I do not know whether it is safe. Here are my symptoms, medicines and timing.” Ask what, if anything, you should do before you are examined.
- Follow the professional’s plan, not the AI’s plan. Ask when to seek more help, what worsening would mean and who to contact after hours. If the professional cannot review the issue promptly and symptoms are worsening, use the urgent route for your location.
U.S. Food and Drug Administration consumer guidance similarly advises contacting a health care provider before following medical advice found online (FDA, “Health Information on the Web”). That advice is relevant whether the online source is a search result, forum or AI assistant.
When to use urgent or emergency care
Use urgent or emergency services when symptoms seem urgent or are getting worse, rather than asking the AI to triage you repeatedly. An AI system cannot reliably rule out a dangerous cause from a text exchange, and a delay caused by seeking reassurance can itself be harmful.

England: NHS 111 as a location-specific example
In England, NHS 111 is an urgent-advice pathway. NHS 111 online asks about symptoms and directs people to appropriate care; it does not provide a diagnosis and is intended for England only (NHS, “How NHS 111 online works”). Use the telephone or online route according to the NHS instructions, and use emergency services when the situation may be life-threatening. Readers elsewhere should use the equivalent official service in their country.
If you have already acted on the answer
Tell the clinician exactly what you took, stopped, delayed or changed and when. Do not conceal the AI interaction because it may help the professional identify a timing or medication issue. If you feel suddenly worse or believe there is immediate danger, escalate through local emergency services rather than waiting for a routine appointment.
How to recognize a potentially unsafe response
You do not need to prove that an answer is wrong before pausing. The following features are practical warning signs:

- It gives a diagnosis or “all clear” without an examination, testing or a complete history.
- It recommends changing a dose, stopping a prescription, combining medicines or using someone else’s medicine.
- It tells you to delay care despite symptoms that are severe, worsening or unexplained.
- It presents one cause as certain while ignoring other possibilities or important missing information.
- It gives contradictory instructions in the same answer or changes its recommendation when you ask the same question again.
- It asks you to disclose highly sensitive health information without explaining how that data is protected.
- It supplies a source that does not actually support the claim, or a link that you cannot verify.
These signs do not establish that the advice is false; they establish that the answer is not a safe basis for a consequential decision. Ask a professional to interpret the situation instead.
What information to prepare for a clinician
A concise, chronological note helps a clinician assess the real problem rather than the AI’s framing. A paper symptom tracker journal, notebook or phone note is optional; it organizes information but cannot verify the response.
Useful fields
- Symptom description in your own words
- Start time, duration and changes over time
- Temperature or other measurements you actually took, with units and time
- Medicines, supplements and recent dose changes
- Allergies, pregnancy or breastfeeding status, and relevant medical conditions
- The exact AI wording that prompted concern
- Your specific questions, such as whether to take the next dose or where to seek care
NHS guidance explains that people can send symptom information to a GP surgery for review through its online-consultation process (NHS App help, reviewed 13 July 2026). Use the method your practice or health service provides, and keep a copy of what you submitted.

Protect sensitive health information
Before entering details into an AI service, understand what the service stores, who can access the data, whether conversations are used to improve the system and how deletion works. The WHO’s technical guidance on large multi-modal models warns that an application may not protect sensitive data users provide (WHO, “Ethics and governance of large multi-modal models”).
Share less while you seek general information
- Remove names, addresses, phone numbers, health-record numbers and photographs that are not needed for the question.
- Do not paste an entire medical record when a short, non-identifying summary is enough.
- Never share passwords, one-time codes or insurance credentials.
- Ask a clinician or the service’s privacy contact how to send necessary records securely.
Privacy protection does not make an AI answer medically reliable. It only reduces unnecessary exposure while you decide what information belongs with a qualified professional.
What software regulation does—and does not—tell you
The FDA describes regulatory considerations for software functions intended to provide clinical decision support (FDA, “Step 6: Is the Software Function Intended to Provide Clinical Decision Support?”). That guidance concerns how particular software functions may be assessed; it is not a guarantee that a consumer chatbot is clinically safe, approved for your use or regulated as a medical device. Do not infer safety from an app’s branding, a disclaimer, an impressive interface or a claim that it uses a medical model.

How to ask an AI follow-up without relying on it
A follow-up can help you identify what to discuss with a professional, but it should not become a substitute for care. You can ask the system to separate facts from assumptions, list what information is missing and quote the source it relied on. Treat the result as a draft of questions, not a triage decision.
A safer question format
Here is the exact answer I received. Identify statements that require confirmation by a clinician, list information that is missing, and explain what questions I should ask a qualified professional. Do not diagnose me, tell me that I am safe, or recommend changing medication.
Do not use a second AI system as the deciding vote when two systems disagree. Contradiction is a reason to contact a human professional, not evidence that the more confident answer is correct.
After the professional review
Record the advice you were given, the person or service that gave it and any follow-up date. Ask what to do if symptoms do not improve, which changes require a call and where to go outside normal hours. If an online health record contains an error, use the record-holder’s correction process; an AI conversation is not an authoritative medical record.

Quick Recap
Key limits to keep in mind
- An AI assistant cannot examine you, measure vital signs or order a diagnostic test through a chat alone.
- No general article can define every emergency symptom or replace location-specific instructions.
- Online information can support a conversation with a professional, but it cannot clear you to ignore symptoms or alter treatment.
- When advice affects medication, treatment or whether care is sought, professional confirmation comes before action.
