To digitize a DVD and Blu-ray collection, you need a computer, an optical drive that can read the discs you own, disc-reading software, video-conversion software if you want smaller files, and enough storage for both working files and backups. A DVD-only drive cannot read Blu-ray discs. A Blu-ray-capable drive may read both types, but you should verify its supported formats, connection and operating-system compatibility before buying.
The process has two separate stages: first, read or copy the disc contents; second, optionally convert the video into a playback-friendly file. Plan storage and your preferred output format before processing the collection, because a disc-sized copy and a compressed encode have very different capacity and time requirements.

Hardware you need
A computer with a compatible optical drive
Check whether your desktop or laptop already has an optical drive. Many current computers do not. If yours lacks one, use an external USB optical drive. The drive must be Blu-ray-capable for Blu-ray discs; a DVD-only model is sufficient only for DVDs and CDs.
Optical drives are the hardware through which disc software reads the data. MakeMKV’s technical documentation discusses direct access to optical devices and the need for a drive interface the operating system can use: MakeMKV’s optical-drive documentation. Before purchasing, confirm all of the following in the manufacturer’s specifications:

Can one drive handle both DVDs and Blu-rays? A Blu-ray-capable drive is the practical choice for a mixed collection, but do not assume every model supports every disc format. Check the exact model’s specification rather than relying on the product category.
Storage for source files, conversions and backups
You need free space for the files created while reading discs and for the final library. Capacity depends on the number and type of discs, whether you retain a disc-sized copy or create smaller encodes, and the settings used for each title. There is no responsible universal terabyte figure for an unknown collection.
Use a representative sample before buying storage: process a DVD and a Blu-ray with your intended method, record the resulting sizes, then multiply by the number of comparable discs. Leave additional working space so a conversion does not fail when the destination fills. If the files matter, maintain another copy on a separate storage device. The U.S. National Archives warns that optical media such as DVDs and Blu-rays create long-term preservation challenges and recommends copying content into a current storage environment; its guidance is available at Machine-Readable Media.

Optional equipment
A second storage device can be useful for backup, but the appropriate capacity depends on your measured output. A network-attached storage system can make files available to several devices, while a directly connected external drive is simpler for a single computer. Neither replaces checking that a completed file plays correctly.
Software: separate disc reading from video conversion
Disc-reading and copying software
Disc-reading software extracts the title and associated data from the optical disc into files or a disc structure. MakeMKV is one example of software designed for this stage. Its FAQ describes a Blu-ray backup as a folder structure rather than an ISO image, so do not assume that a “backup” option creates an ISO: MakeMKV’s FAQ explains the product-specific behavior.

Disc structures may contain several playlists, language tracks, commentary, subtitles and menus. Extraction gives you source material from which to choose what you retain. Keep the original folder output if you want a less-processed archival copy, or use the resulting title files as input to a converter.
Video-conversion software
HandBrake converts video into formats such as MP4, MKV or WebM and can reduce file size. It provides controls for cropping, resizing and selecting subtitle and audio tracks. HandBrake always converts video; it does not simply pass the original video through unchanged. Its versioned documentation is at About HandBrake.
HandBrake also states: “HandBrake also does not defeat or circumvent copy protection of any kind.” In practice, that means HandBrake alone is not a solution for protected commercial discs. A separate application must first create files HandBrake can open, where that process is lawful in your jurisdiction.
Support for protected Blu-ray variants
Some Blu-ray discs use BD+ protection. MakeMKV explains that processing BD+ depends on the necessary SVQ and key support, so compatibility is not universal. Consult the current information at MakeMKV’s BD+ and SVQ page when a particular disc fails or is reported as BD+ protected. Do not treat success with one title as proof that every protected Blu-ray will work.
Choose your output before you start
| Approach | What you keep | Storage and processing implications | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Disc-sized copy or folder backup | A larger, less-processed representation of the disc contents, potentially including multiple titles, menus and tracks. | Requires substantially more storage and may take longer to copy and manage. Exact size varies by disc. | Preservation-oriented storage or a future re-encoding workflow. |
| Transcoded file | A selected title with chosen audio and subtitle tracks, encoded to MP4, MKV or WebM. | Usually easier to play and store, but conversion takes additional processing time and the chosen settings determine the final size and quality. | Routine playback on computers, televisions or media players. |
These approaches are not mutually exclusive. You can retain a source copy for selected discs and create smaller playback files, but doing so increases storage requirements and requires a clear naming system.

Step-by-step digitization workflow
- Inventory the collection. List each DVD and Blu-ray, noting special editions, multiple-disc sets, language needs and discs you may want to preserve without conversion. This prevents you from discovering halfway through the project that a second disc or commentary track was overlooked.
- Verify the drive and computer. Connect the internal or external drive, install any required system software, and confirm that the operating system detects it. For an external drive, check the USB connection and power arrangement before inserting valuable media.
- Test with representative discs. Read one ordinary DVD and one Blu-ray before processing the entire collection. Confirm that the software can see the disc, identify titles and access the tracks you need. A successful test on one disc does not establish compatibility with every protection scheme or edition.
- Read or back up the disc. Use your disc-reading application to create the chosen file or folder output. If you select a Blu-ray backup in MakeMKV, expect the folder-structure behavior documented in its FAQ rather than an ISO by default. Save the output to a drive with enough free space and avoid filling the destination during a long read.
- Decide which tracks to retain. Identify the main feature, alternate cuts, commentary, desired audio languages and subtitles. Disc menus can include trailers and extras that you may not want in a compact library. Make these choices before conversion so you do not repeatedly process the same source.
- Convert when smaller files are preferable. Open the extracted, compatible source in HandBrake, choose MP4, MKV or WebM, set cropping or resizing only when needed, and select the required audio and subtitle tracks. Remember that HandBrake converts the video; it is not a lossless pass-through operation.
- Use a clear filename and folder scheme. Include the title, release year when useful, disc number for sets, and an indication of the selected language or cut. Keep extras in a separate, clearly labeled folder so the main feature is easy to find.
- Verify before shelving the disc. Play the beginning, a middle section and the end of each resulting file. Check that the intended audio and subtitle tracks are present, the picture is correctly framed, and the filename matches the physical disc. Keep the original disc until verification and backup are complete.
- Back up the finished library. Copy important files to a separate storage device or current storage environment. Test that a sample can be opened from the backup rather than assuming that a completed copy is readable.
How to estimate storage without guessing
Measure instead of using a blanket estimate. Process a representative standard DVD, a feature-length Blu-ray and any unusually large special edition. Record the size of the source output and the converted file at your chosen settings. Group the collection by similar media and multiply the measured average by the number of discs in each group.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Keep three quantities separate in your plan:
- Working space: free capacity needed while reading and converting a disc.
- Primary library: the files you intend to play regularly.
- Backup copy: an independent copy that protects against a drive failure or accidental deletion.
Conversion settings can change the result substantially. Selecting fewer tracks, resizing the video or using a different encoding setting changes file size, while retaining multiple titles or uncompressed source material increases it. Re-measure after changing settings instead of applying an earlier estimate to the whole collection.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Playback and organization checks
Choose formats your target devices can decode. MP4 is broadly supported, while MKV and WebM may be preferable when you need particular subtitle or audio-handling options; compatibility depends on the player. Test on the devices you actually use rather than assuming a file that opens on the computer will play everywhere.
Preserve meaningful metadata in the filename and, where your player supports it, in the file’s tags. For television seasons or multi-disc sets, use consistent season, episode and disc numbering. Keep a simple inventory listing the physical disc, source folder, converted filename and backup location. This makes it possible to find a title without opening every file.
Common problems and what they mean
The computer does not see the drive
Check the USB cable, try another port, confirm the drive’s power requirement and verify operating-system support. If the drive appears but the disc does not, test another known-good disc to distinguish a connection problem from a damaged or incompatible disc.

A DVD works but a Blu-ray does not
A DVD-only drive cannot read Blu-ray media. With a Blu-ray-capable drive, verify that the model supports the disc type and that the reading application recognizes the drive. Protection schemes and disc-specific compatibility can also affect results.
The disc is visible but the expected feature is missing
Inspect the title and playlist choices. Discs often contain several versions, extras and language variants. Select the intended feature and tracks rather than assuming the first item is correct.
Conversion stops for lack of space
Check both the source location and destination volume. Delete only temporary files you have already verified, move completed outputs to planned storage, and leave working room before starting the next conversion.
A file plays without subtitles or the wrong language
Return to the track-selection step and select the required audio and subtitle streams. Verify the result on a short section before processing additional discs with the same settings.

Legal considerations
Copyright and circumvention rules depend on your country, the purpose of the copy and the type of disc. In the United States, 37 CFR 201.40 lists specified, conditional exemptions involving protected DVDs and Blu-ray discs, including exemptions for certain eligible institutions and other limited situations. The regulation is not a blanket authorization for every consumer to bypass protection on every disc they own: U.S. Copyright Office, 37 CFR 201.40.
Before bypassing technical protection, check the law that applies where you live and to your intended use. This guide is practical information, not individualized legal advice; consult a qualified lawyer for a specific situation.
