What does Australian Unity Comprehensive cover?
Hospital cover and extras cover are different benefits, and Australian Unity offers more than one cover combination. The product name alone does not establish which treatments, services or limits apply to a particular policy. Start with the insurer’s health insurance cover information and open the fact sheet for the exact option you are considering.

For hospital cover, check the treatment categories included and excluded, any excess or daily co-payment, and whether you can use the hospitals you expect to attend. Extras benefits need separate scrutiny: confirm which services are included, the benefit paid for each service, annual limits, restrictions and waiting periods. Australian Unity advises consumers to consult the product fact sheet for these details, including what “covered” means and what costs may remain.
What costs can remain when you are covered?
Being covered does not necessarily mean the insurer pays every bill. Australian Unity identifies possible out-of-pocket costs including an excess, gaps between a doctor’s bill and the benefit paid, emergency department fees, and charges for a private room at a hospital without an agreement with the insurer. See its overview of health cover, then check the policy documents for the hospitals and circumstances relevant to you.
For a fair comparison, consider likely costs as well as premiums. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission explains how excesses, extras maximums and waiting periods affect private health insurance costs in its health insurance guidance.
What does the published $55 co-payment and $500 excess refer to?
A surfaced Australian Government PHIS lists Australian Unity Comprehensive Hospital (Gold) with a $55 daily co-payment and a $500 excess. Those figures apply to that named configuration in that statement; they are not established as terms for every Australian Unity Comprehensive policy. Check the current matching PHIS before relying on them, because the statement and the policy you are quoted must correspond.
The government describes the PHIS as a key policy-information document and directs consumers to the insurer for policy-specific details. Use the PrivateHealth.gov.au information service to locate the relevant statement, then verify the selected state or territory, household and cost settings with Australian Unity.
What waiting periods apply?
Waiting periods can apply when you first join or upgrade cover. The waiting periods for hospital treatments and extras services can differ, so check the current fact sheet for each benefit rather than assuming one period applies across the policy.
Government guidance says an insurer cannot impose an additional waiting period when you switch to the same level of benefits. That does not mean every transfer is automatic: confirm whether your previous cover and the new benefits are equivalent, and ask how any increase in benefits will be treated. The government’s waiting-period guidance explains the general rules; Australian Unity must confirm how they apply to your policy.
How much does Australian Unity Comprehensive cost?
There is no universal price established for Australian Unity Comprehensive. The premium depends on the policy configuration and the details used for the quote, so a price is meaningful only when matched to your state or territory, household, excess and co-payment choices, and applicable rebate and loading assumptions.
Rank #4
Request a current quote and save the date and settings. Compare it with other policies using the same household and assumptions, then weigh the premium against hospital inclusions and exclusions, access to agreement hospitals, extras benefits and limits, waiting periods, and likely out-of-pocket charges. The available policy information does not establish a single price or a like-for-like comparison that would support a universal value verdict.

- Identify the exact policy. Record the full product name and configuration, your state or territory, household type, excess and daily co-payment.
- Match the documents. Check that the current PHIS and fact sheet describe those same settings; do not use another configuration’s terms as a substitute.
- Check care you may use. Review hospital treatment categories, exclusions, agreement-hospital access, extras services, item benefits and annual limits.
- Estimate what you may pay. Include the premium and relevant excess or co-payment, possible doctor gaps, emergency department fees, non-agreement private-room charges, and extras costs above limits.
- Confirm waiting periods and transfers. Ask the insurer how previous cover is recognised and whether any increased benefits have a waiting period.
- Compare equivalent quotes. Hold location, household, rebate and loading assumptions, quote date and excess choice constant across policies.
Australian Unity Comprehensive is worth considering if the specific cover provides the benefits you expect at a cost you can justify after accounting for limits and remaining expenses. The product label alone is not enough to determine value.
