Is ArchiveBox Free to Use? Self-Hosting Costs Explained

ArchiveBox has no stated software subscription or per-snapshot fee. Your self-hosting costs depend on hardware, electricity, storage, backups, and hosting choices.

Yes. ArchiveBox’s core software is free and open source, and the project documents self-hosting without a required subscription or per-snapshot fee. Running it yourself can still cost money for a computer or server, electricity, internet access, storage, and backups. Your total depends on what you already own and how much you archive; there is no universal monthly price.

Do you have to pay for ArchiveBox?

The ArchiveBox project describes the software as “Free & open source, own your own data & maintain your privacy by self-hosting.” Its official materials document Docker Compose, Docker, and direct command-line installation, but do not identify a required ArchiveBox subscription or charge per snapshot. That establishes the software’s stated price, not that hosting, support, or other services are free. ArchiveBox project README

ArchiveBox says revenue from consulting for corporate clients supports development and helps keep the software free. Consulting is an optional service, not a prerequisite for self-hosting. ArchiveBox storage guide

What does self-hosting cost?

Self-hosting shifts the bill from a software subscription to the resources you choose to use. If you have a suitable computer and enough free disk space, you may not need to buy a server or drive. You will still need to account for electricity, network access, maintenance, and any backups. A rented VPS or additional storage adds a provider charge, which varies by location, provider, and configuration; the available project materials do not establish a reliable universal VPS price.

Setup choice What it can avoid Costs to consider
Computer you already own A new server purchase or VPS rental Electricity, network access, storage capacity, backups, and keeping the machine available when needed
Rented VPS Buying and maintaining local server hardware Recurring hosting fees, storage limits or charges, network dependence, and backups
Local bulk storage Depending on a remote storage provider for archive files Optional drive purchase, electricity, and planning for capacity and drive replacement
Remote storage Adding local disk capacity Provider charges, network dependence, and the storage service’s own terms

These are choices, not ArchiveBox requirements: the project documents local and remote storage arrangements, and does not require a NAS, cloud server, paid consulting, or external drive.

How much disk space should you plan for?

The ArchiveBox README gives a broad estimate of about 1 GB to 50 GB per 1,000 snapshots. This is the project’s estimate, not a guaranteed quota or an independent benchmark; the README does not show a publication date for it (accessed in 2026). Capture settings, especially whether media such as video and audio is saved, can make the difference substantial. ArchiveBox project README

Seagate Portable 5TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PS4, & Xbox - 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX5000400), Black
  • Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Use the range as an initial planning signal rather than a precise forecast. Estimate your expected snapshot count, decide which capture methods and media you intend to keep, and leave additional room for growth and backups. The evidence does not support a single disk requirement for every collection.

Put the right data on the right storage

The official storage guide recommends keeping the index database, configuration, and logs on a local SSD; their footprint is usually under 10 GB. Bulk archive content can be stored on an HDD or remote filesystem. That makes an external hard drive a possible way to add capacity, not a requirement to install ArchiveBox. ArchiveBox storage guide

What host resources does ArchiveBox recommend?

The official install guide lists macOS and Ubuntu on amd64/x86_64 or arm64/aarch64, and Docker on Linux or macOS. It gives 1 GB RAM as the minimum and recommends 2 GB or more. For full default crawls on a 1 GB VPS, it advises at least 4 GB of swap. These are project-published requirements and guidance, not independent performance test results. The project recommends Docker Compose as its easiest installation and update route. ArchiveBox Install wiki (edited September 20, 2026)

The README also documents Docker and direct uv installation, and says the same data directory can be accessed using Docker or non-Docker commands. Archived material is stored as ordinary files and folders in formats including HTML, PDF, PNG, and WARC; the project says the archive can be read without running ArchiveBox. How to estimate your own budget

  1. Choose the host. Check whether an existing computer meets the project’s resource guidance and whether you can keep it available as needed. Otherwise, price a VPS for your own location and requirements; there is no supported universal monthly figure.
  2. Estimate capture volume and settings. Decide how many snapshots you expect and whether your setup will save video or audio. Use ArchiveBox’s broad 1–50 GB per 1,000 snapshots estimate as a planning range, not a promise.
  3. Separate index and archive storage. Reserve local SSD space for the index, configuration, and logs (usually under 10 GB according to the project); plan bulk content capacity separately.
  4. Include resilience costs. Decide whether you need a backup copy, where it will live, and how you will handle storage growth and drive replacement. A backup increases capacity needs but is a choice about protecting your collection, not an ArchiveBox fee.
  5. Add recurring operating costs. Include electricity and network access for a local host, or the VPS and storage charges for a rented setup. Those prices depend on your circumstances and provider.
