If ArchiveBox rejects an Indian website with a certificate error, first determine whether the site’s certificate chain is invalid or the ArchiveBox host/container lacks an up-to-date trusted CA certificate. “Indian website” is not itself a diagnosis. Identify the failing extractor and test from the same runtime that runs ArchiveBox before changing TLS settings; disabling validation can make a capture vulnerable to interception.
Start by identifying what failed
ArchiveBox can use multiple extractors, so an error from one capture path does not prove that every extractor has the same certificate problem. Begin with the exact error and the tool that emitted it. ArchiveBox’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking URL reachability, dependencies, and the actual logs or output.

- Record the full URL, failure time, ArchiveBox version from
archivebox version, installation type (such as Docker or a package install), failing extractor, and verbatim error. Redact credentials and private query parameters before sharing logs. - Determine whether one extractor fails or whether several do. A message such as “SSL certificate problem, verify that the CA cert is OK” is a clue, not a diagnosis.
- Repeat the check from the same host or container where ArchiveBox runs. A browser on another computer may have a different CA store, network path, or proxy configuration.
If the same runtime cannot reach the URL at all, investigate connectivity and dependencies separately from TLS trust. ArchiveBox’s project repository describes its multi-tool capture setup.
Distinguish a site-chain problem from a local trust problem
TLS verification depends on both the certificate chain presented by the website and the trusted root certificates available to the client. GitHub’s general explanation of CA verification errors lists an outdated root certificate as one possible cause and notes that operating-system updates generally update CA certificates. That possibility does not establish the cause of any particular ArchiveBox failure.

From the ArchiveBox runtime, inspect the target hostname’s certificate chain, hostname match, validity dates, and issuer using the client relevant to the failing extractor. Compare with a current browser or a second network only to help isolate differences; a successful browser visit from elsewhere does not prove the ArchiveBox runtime trusts the same chain.
- Expired certificate, wrong hostname, missing intermediate, or otherwise invalid chain: the durable remedy is for the site operator to repair the certificate configuration.
- Site chain appears valid elsewhere but the ArchiveBox runtime rejects it: check that runtime’s CA bundle, system clock, proxy, and extractor-specific configuration. A stale CA store is one plausible explanation, not a certainty.
- Private or organization-issued CA: ask the administrator for the verified CA certificate and configure trust in the relevant runtime. Do not download and trust an arbitrary certificate just to suppress the error.
Update trust configuration before bypassing checks
Refresh the runtime’s CA certificates
If the CA bundle in the host or container is stale, update the operating system’s CA certificates using the documented package process for that platform, then retry the capture. The exact command depends on the base operating system and installation method, so do not apply a package-manager command meant for a different image. For containers, ensure the image actually used by ArchiveBox receives the update; updating a separate host does not necessarily update certificates inside a container.
Check the installed ArchiveBox version and setting names
The current project README lists CHECK_SSL_VALIDITY with a default of True and says setting it to False allows URLs with bad SSL: ArchiveBox README. ArchiveBox’s versioned 0.9.71 configuration documentation describes this as a shared setting for HTTP-fetching extractors including wget, yt-dlp, gallery-dl, and Chrome, and says an extractor can override it with a setting such as <EXTRACTOR>_CHECK_SSL_VALIDITY.

Use disabled validation only as a deliberate exception
Setting CHECK_SSL_VALIDITY=False, or an applicable extractor-specific override, tells the relevant capture path to accept a certificate that it cannot validate. It is a workaround, not a certificate repair: TLS can no longer establish that the captured content came from the intended site rather than an intermediary. ArchiveBox’s 0.4.13 documentation explicitly warns about this man-in-the-middle risk.
If a one-off capture is still justified, validate the site through a trusted channel where possible, scope the bypass to the relevant extractor or task if the installed version supports that, and restore validation immediately afterward. Avoid leaving certificate checks disabled globally as a routine fix.
Retry an already indexed URL explicitly
ArchiveBox does not normally download an already indexed URL again on a subsequent run. Once the underlying certificate or configuration issue is fixed, request a fresh capture with archivebox add --no-only-new URL, as shown in the troubleshooting documentation. Replace URL with the target URL. Deleting existing archive data is not necessary just to force a retry.

| What you observe | Likely area to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Only one extractor reports certificate verification failure | That extractor’s trust configuration or behavior | Check its logs and the installed version’s extractor-specific settings before changing a shared setting. |
| Several unrelated URLs fail in the same runtime | Runtime CA bundle, clock, proxy, or network configuration | Test from the ArchiveBox host/container and inspect its certificate trust configuration. |
| The certificate is expired, for another hostname, or has an incomplete chain | The website’s certificate configuration | Ask the site operator to repair the chain; disabling verification only hides the failure. |
| The URL was captured before, and a normal repeat does not fetch it | ArchiveBox’s already-indexed URL behavior | Use archivebox add --no-only-new URL to request a recapture. |
| Many sites fail and the cause remains unclear | Shared runtime issue or multiple extractor/dependency failures | Collect specific URLs, exact errors, version, extractor, and runtime details for a support request. |
When asking for help, share the relevant errors and environment details, but redact secrets. ArchiveBox’s troubleshooting page suggests opening an issue if “more than 10-20% of sites in the archive are broken”; that is a project troubleshooting heuristic, not a statistic about Indian sites or certificate failures.

If you need a screenshot rather than an ArchiveBox archive, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return an image or PDF; its clean-shot options accept cookie/consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. The API reports whether a result was billed, and bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools to take screenshots, inspect page information, and capture PDFs.
For example, save a WebP screenshot from the Stripe homepage with cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, no card required.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Indian CA always need to be added manually to ArchiveBox?
No blanket India-specific CA bundle is established here. India’s Controller of Certifying Authorities describes how licensed Indian CAs may seek inclusion in Mozilla products; inspect the particular site’s issuer and chain instead. See the CCA guidelines.
Can I use ScreenshotNeo to create an ArchiveBox archive?
ScreenshotNeo returns screenshots or PDFs; it is not presented here as an ArchiveBox replacement. Use ArchiveBox when you need its archival workflow and troubleshoot the failing extractor and runtime.
