The better-value console is usually the one that keeps more of the games you already own playable and gives you access to the games you most want next. Xbox Series X|S supports select Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox games, while PS5 plays PS4 and PS5 games. Your physical discs, the console model you choose, and whether you plan to pay for a rotating game catalog can change the answer.
Start with the games you already own
Make a list of the games you would genuinely want to keep playing, then check compatibility title by title. A console’s backward-compatibility headline does not mean every older game works.

Xbox: select games across three generations
Microsoft says backward compatibility is available at no extra charge for select games you already own from Xbox One, Xbox 360, and the original Xbox. Features vary by title, so verify each game before treating it as part of your usable library. Microsoft’s backward-compatibility information also notes that Series S supports digital games only.

PlayStation: PS4 games carry forward to PS5
Sony says more than 4,000 games are ready to play across PS4 and PS5, and that PS5 can play PS4 and PS5 games in disc or digital formats. The figure is Sony’s description of games ready to play, not a guarantee that every PS4 title is compatible. Check the specific game and any title-specific limitations on PlayStation’s PS5 backward-compatibility page.

Does owning discs change which console is better value?
Yes. Physical games have value only if the console can read them. Xbox Series S is digital-only, and PS5 Digital Edition has no disc drive. If you own discs and want to keep using them, factor in the disc-capable Series X or a PS5 configuration with a disc drive; compatibility still depends on the game.
Xbox announced on August 26, 2026, a feature that gives a digital entitlement for supported Xbox One and Series X discs while the original disc continues to work as before. Xbox said not every title was supported at launch, so this is not a way to convert an entire disc collection into digital games. See Xbox’s announcement for the stated conditions.

Do you need Game Pass or PlayStation Plus to play games you own?
A subscription catalog is different from buying a game. PlayStation Plus Extra includes hundreds of catalog games, while Premium adds Classics, trials, and streaming in supported markets. Catalog access requires the corresponding active plan, and games can leave the catalog. Sony also says monthly games can be played while membership is active. Check PlayStation Plus plan details and the catalog’s removal dates before relying on a title being available.

For a game you bought outright, the subscription catalog is not the basis of ownership. The key distinction is whether your purchase is compatible with the new console and, for a disc, whether the console has a drive. Do not count a catalog game as a permanent addition to your library.

Compare the cost you will actually pay
As displayed on PlayStation’s US page on October 11, 2026, the monthly prices were $10.99 for Essential, $16.99 for Extra, and $19.99 for Premium; the page also listed $79.99 for 12 months of Essential. Subscriptions recur until cancelled, and terms can change. These are US page prices observed on that date, not worldwide or guaranteed future prices. Compare only the plans you would keep, the catalog games you would actually play, and how often you play online multiplayer. Current Xbox Game Pass prices and directly equivalent plan features are not established here, so these figures do not support a claim that one service is cheaper. Console and game prices also vary by region and over time.

Consider the games you want next and other devices
List your must-play upcoming or current games and check their availability on the specific platform before choosing. Many games appear on more than one platform, but no current game-by-game availability list is established here; there is no sound basis for declaring a universal exclusive-games winner.

There is also a limited Xbox PC development worth distinguishing from broad cross-device compatibility: on July 22, 2026, Xbox announced an early-release backward-compatibility launch on PC with four original Xbox games. Xbox said owned digital licenses for those four games carry over to PC or handhelds. That is not a promise that every Xbox console purchase transfers to PC. Details are in Xbox’s announcement.

A practical way to decide
- Inventory your library. Separate digital purchases from discs and identify the older games you would actually replay.
- Verify compatibility. Check each important title on the relevant Xbox or PlayStation compatibility page; do not assume a whole generation works without exceptions.
- Match the hardware to your collection. If discs matter, exclude Series S and PS5 Digital Edition unless you are willing to replace or forgo those disc games.
- Price subscriptions for your habits. Compare regional prices and the actual catalog titles you expect to play, plus any online multiplayer need. Treat access as temporary if the title can leave the catalog.
- Check must-play games. Confirm platform availability for the titles you care about most, then choose the system that combines those games with the strongest usable existing library.
For a reader with a substantial compatible Xbox disc library, a disc-capable Xbox may preserve more value; for someone with a large PS4 library, PS5 offers a broad route forward. If most of your games are digital, compare their title-specific compatibility and the games you want next rather than choosing by catalog size alone.
