How much is your old iPhone worth?
There is no universal price for a “really old iPhone.” Its value depends on the exact model, storage, condition, configuration and the offers available where you live. Start by identifying the phone rather than judging it by its appearance.

- Find the model and storage. Check the phone’s Settings or its device identification information. Record the model and storage capacity; similar-looking phones can be different generations.
- Note its condition and whether it powers on. Be accurate about damage and function when requesting an estimate or creating a listing. A quote may change after the device is inspected.
- Check a current trade-in estimate. Apple’s Apple Trade In page lets you check the current route for your region. Eligibility and offers depend on device details, and a final assessment may differ if the phone’s actual condition does not match what you reported.
- Compare marketplace prices for the same phone. Use the same model and, where available, the same storage, condition and carrier status. Swappa’s current iPhone prices offer a US marketplace reference, not a guaranteed sale price for your device.
For context, Swappa’s “Most Listed” table showed an average price of $59 for iPhone 6S and $83 for iPhone 6S Plus when updated October 6, 2026. Its iPhone selling table showed averages of $68 for iPhone 8 and $68 for iPhone 7 when accessed October 7, 2026. These are changing marketplace figures; they do not promise what a particular phone will sell for, and condition and configuration matter.

Compare what you would actually receive, not just a marketplace average against a trade-in estimate. A trade-in may be more straightforward, while a marketplace sale involves listing the phone and finding a buyer. Selling costs, the chance of a sale, condition and time to payment or credit all affect the practical value. Neither route always pays more.

When is an iPhone e-waste instead?
If the phone has no meaningful resale or trade-in value, that does not mean it belongs in household rubbish. Apple says devices that are ineligible for trade-in credit can still be recycled for free through Apple Trade In. The available process can vary by country or region, so check Apple’s local page for eligibility and shipping or drop-off instructions. You can also consult your local e-waste collection program.
Age alone does not settle the question. A current, model-specific offer is more useful than a general guess based on how old the phone looks; if no practical offer is available, use an appropriate recycling route.

Prepare the phone before handover
Back up and transfer anything you want to keep, then remove your personal information before giving the phone away. Apple’s preparation guidance for India also advises checking Parts and Service History for a repair marked “Finish Repair.” Follow the instructions for your device and the handover provider, and use the guidance for your own region where it differs.

Handle the battery separately and safely
Do not put an iPhone or loose lithium-ion battery in household waste. Apple’s UK disposal guidance says iPhone batteries should be serviced by Apple or an authorized provider and recycled or disposed of separately from household waste. Follow your local rules and collection instructions, especially if the battery is damaged; consult a qualified service provider rather than attempting battery removal yourself.
