One Eaton HDX PDU is documented for up to 46 kW—not 81 kW—in the Eaton materials available for this product family. Eaton calls the family HDX PDU G4, rather than HDXL. The 81 kW figure is not substantiated as the rating of a single unit here, so it should not be used to size a rack without authoritative documentation for the exact model.
This is a specification-focused assessment, not a hands-on review: no unit was installed or independently load-tested. Eaton positions HDX for GPU-intensive AI and high-performance computing workloads, but that intended use does not establish that a particular PDU is suitable for a particular rack.

Is one Eaton HDX rack PDU really rated for 81 kW?
No. Eaton’s September 2025 HDX PDU G4 announcement states that the family provides “up to 100A / 46 kW in a 0U form factor.” Eaton’s HDX brochure likewise describes capacity of up to 46 kW per PDU. Neither source supports 81 kW from one documented unit.

The title’s “HDXL” name also does not match the product name in the Eaton sources reviewed, which identify the family as HDX PDU G4. Before relying on either the name or a power figure, check the exact Eaton catalog number and its model-specific documentation. A larger figure could refer to a multi-PDU or rack-level total, or to a different designation, but the available sources do not establish that explanation.

What the 46 kW specification does—and does not—tell you
The 46 kW figure is Eaton’s stated maximum for the HDX family, not an independent test result or a guarantee about the power available to every connected load. Eaton’s brochure specifies up to 46 kW per PDU; its September 2025 announcement pairs that maximum with up to 100 A in a 0U form factor.
Those are manufacturer specifications. Actual suitability depends on the exact PDU, facility supply, installation, and connected equipment. A rack designer should verify the model’s rated capacity and electrical requirements against the facility and load rather than treating the family maximum as a universal operating target.

What 0U means on a rack PDU
0U describes a vertical mounting format: the PDU attaches along the rack rather than occupying horizontal rack units. Eaton says this arrangement provides outlet density without using rack space. Its brochure also describes preinstalled tool-less mounting buttons and alternating-phase outlets; these are manufacturer-described features, not independently verified installation findings.
Zero-U does not mean that every rack can accept every model. Check the rack’s geometry, available mounting position, PDU dimensions, and the installation requirements for the exact catalog number.

Which Eaton HDX model should you consider for an AI rack?
There is no single model recommendation without the rack’s electrical and equipment specifications. Eaton’s listings show that HDX configurations differ in supply voltage, current, input connection, outlet layout, and stated capacity. One listed managed model, for example, is a 0U, hardwired unit rated at 240/415 V with 54 outlets and a 46 kW capacity. That example is not evidence that it fits a particular facility.
Compare the actual candidate catalog numbers against these requirements:
Rank #4
- Safe, reliable power distribution ideal for distributing alternate waveform ups or generator power in rack enclosures, network closets and more
- 13 outlets (12 rear facing outlets, 1 front facing outlet)
- Switch-free design prevents the potential for accidental shutoff of connected loads
- Vertical all-metal rack mount cabinet with detachable mounting flanges allows wall-mount, under-counter, and 19-inch rack mount mounting in both 1U and zero U formats
- 2 year limited warranty
- Supply: Confirm facility voltage and phase, then verify the PDU’s voltage, current, and rated capacity.
- Input connection: Determine whether the installation needs a plug-in connection or hardwiring, and confirm the connector or wiring arrangement.
- Equipment connections: Match outlet types and counts to the servers and other devices, and plan how loads will be distributed.
- Rack fit: Check dimensions, vertical mounting compatibility, and installation clearances.
- Management: Decide whether you need input or outlet metering, outlet switching, network management, or environmental monitoring.
Verify these details against the exact model documentation and the facility’s electrical design before selecting or installing a unit.
What monitoring and control features are available?
Eaton’s installation guide distinguishes HDX models by their monitoring and control capabilities. The family includes basic, in-line metered, metered input, metered outlet, switched, and managed configurations. The guide also says environmental sensor monitoring requires an Environmental Monitoring Probe; confirm probe compatibility with the chosen model before planning for that function.

These categories matter because “managed” or “metered” should not be assumed to mean that every model offers the same measurements or controls. Choose from the functions your operations team needs, then verify which are included on the specific SKU.
Is Eaton HDX designed for AI and GPU-intensive workloads?
Yes, according to Eaton’s product positioning. Eaton describes HDX PDU G4 as a high-density, high-power rack PDU family for GPU-intensive workloads, including AI and HPC. That establishes the manufacturer’s intended application; it is not independent performance testing, a review of an installed AI rack, or a guarantee that a given configuration will support a particular deployment.
For an AI rack, the practical question is whether the exact PDU matches the rack’s supply, connected equipment, load plan, outlets, mounting constraints, and management needs. Eaton’s workload description alone cannot answer that site-specific question.
Quick Recap
What to verify before treating a listing as an 81 kW PDU
- Obtain the exact Eaton catalog number and confirm that the product is HDX PDU G4—or determine what “HDXL” refers to in the listing.
- Find the model-specific Eaton documentation and check its rated capacity, voltage, current, input arrangement, and outlet configuration.
- Establish whether the stated 81 kW applies to one PDU or to multiple units or a rack-level system. Do not infer a single-unit rating from an aggregate figure.
- Have the facility supply and intended connected loads checked against the model’s specifications and applicable installation requirements.
