Yes, affiliate marketing can be worth testing in 2026—but market growth is not a forecast of your income. For a creator or publisher, it is most promising when useful content reaches an audience with relevant buying intent and the commissions can justify the work. For an advertiser, the question is whether affiliate sales are incremental and profitable. The U.S. market is substantial; whether the model works for you depends on your audience, offer, costs, program rules, and results.
What the 2026 market figures do—and don’t—tell you
The Performance Marketing Association’s 2025 study estimates U.S. affiliate-marketing spending at $13.62 billion in 2024, up 49.8% from $9.1 billion in 2021. It also reports that affiliate marketing investment generated $113 billion in U.S. ecommerce sales in 2024, or 9.4% of all U.S. ecommerce sales. These figures show a material channel at U.S. market scale, not what a new publisher will earn or whether a particular site will be profitable. Read the PMA Performance Marketing Industry Study 2025.

The study drew on eight leading affiliate networks and more than 50 publishers across major categories. Its aggregate totals cannot establish an individual’s likely traffic, conversion rate, commissions, or profit. Amazon’s U.S. operating agreement likewise says it makes no representation about the traffic or commission income an Associate can expect. No individual-income or success-rate estimate is established by these sources.

Is it worth it for a creator or publisher?
It may be worth a measured trial if you can reach people who are considering a purchase and can recommend relevant products or services credibly. Affiliate links monetize a recommendation; they do not remove the work of attracting an audience, producing useful content, or maintaining trust.
#1 Best Overall
- Audience and intent: Are people you reach likely to need the offer, or are they only browsing?
- Relevance and trust: Would you make the recommendation without a commission? A poor fit can undermine the value of your content.
- Costs and effort: Account for content production, site or channel upkeep, and any distribution costs—not just the possibility of a commission.
- Program terms: Check eligible locations and traffic sources, what counts as a qualifying purchase, attribution rules, commission and payout conditions, and reporting.
- Time to learn: Track qualified clicks and sales before relying on affiliate income. The cited market figures establish no universal earnings timeline.
Do not treat affiliate revenue as passive or guaranteed. A small test can help answer the practical question: do actual commissions cover the effort and costs for this audience and offer?
Is it worth it for an advertiser?
For advertisers, the relevant measure is not total affiliate-attributed sales alone. Assess whether the program reaches suitable customers and drives sales that would not otherwise have happened, while accounting for commissions, attribution, and campaign costs. The PMA’s $113 billion figure is a U.S. channel-level ecommerce sales estimate for 2024; it is not a return-on-investment promise for an advertiser or a publisher’s earnings.

- Set a clear goal and define which events count as qualifying conversions.
- Review attribution and reporting so you can distinguish credited sales from incremental results.
- Consider sector fit, payout exposure, and the effect of program rules on which referrals qualify.
How to test the economics before relying on commissions
- Start with your audience: Identify a real purchase need among people you already reach, or describe a credible plan for reaching them.
- Select relevant offers: Choose programs whose products or services fit the content and audience; do not let the commission alone determine the recommendation.
- Read the local program agreement: Verify allowed placements and traffic sources, qualifying events, attribution, payout conditions, and current policies for your country.
- Disclose the relationship: Put a clear disclosure close to the recommendation or link, then check any additional program-specific wording requirements.
- Measure a defined trial: Record the work and distribution costs alongside qualified clicks and sales. Continue, adjust, or stop based on the results rather than industry totals.
Disclosures and program rules are part of the work
The Federal Trade Commission says affiliate relationships should be disclosed clearly and conspicuously, close to the recommendation or link. Its guidance gives this example: “I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post.” It says “paid link” next to a link can be adequate, while “commissionable link” may not clearly communicate the relationship. For video and other non-text formats, disclosure should suit the medium; a notice hidden elsewhere may not be noticed. See the FTC’s Endorsement Guides: What People Are Asking.

Its U.S. Associates agreement covers properly tagged links or IDs on qualifying websites, social-media user-generated content, online software applications, and Alexa skills, and requires this statement on a participant’s site or another authorized location: “As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.” Its U.S. operating agreement and policies describe Amazon’s program, not every affiliate program.

Terms also vary by country and can change. Amazon UK’s summary of changes effective April 14, 2026 describes a 180-day limit for qualifying purchases to be shipped, streamed or downloaded, and paid; expanded exclusions involving customers referred through paid or boosted ads linking to Amazon, subject to exceptions; onsite commissions limited to direct qualifying purchases of the same ASIN variant as the linked product page; and an original-content requirement involving commentary, analysis, or transformation that adds value. These are UK-specific examples, not rules to assume apply to Amazon in other countries or to other programs. Check the agreement for your location. Amazon UK: What’s Changed.

When it may not be worth pursuing
- You do not have a relevant audience or a plausible, costed way to reach one.
- The available offers do not fit your readers’ needs or the content you can produce credibly.
- Program restrictions, payout conditions, or attribution make the economics unsuitable for your traffic source or location.
- The time and distribution costs outweigh the commissions observed in your own test.
