The class is not a particular product or connector: a flash drive is one familiar example of a device that can present storage to a host.
What USB MSC defines
USB MSC describes how a host interacts with storage exposed by a USB device. It belongs to the USB device-class specifications maintained by the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF), rather than identifying a specific kind of drive, filesystem, capacity, or performance level. The USB-IF Document Library lists a Mass Storage Class Specification Overview alongside related mass-storage documents.

In practical terms, the host can discover storage presented by the device and access it using the applicable class and transport rules. The exact behavior depends on the specifications and implementation in use.

Bulk-Only Transport (BOT) is one transport specification in the USB mass-storage family; it is not another name for every USB storage transport. USB-IF’s Bulk-Only Transport Revision 1.0 specifies carrying command, data, and status through bulk endpoints. It does not require an interrupt endpoint, and it uses the default control pipe for specified control actions.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
The USB-IF library also lists documents for CBI (Control/Bulk/Interrupt), the UFI command set, and UASP-related material. These documents concern distinct parts or approaches within mass storage. Their presence in the library does not, by itself, establish which transport a particular product uses or whether every host supports it.
What the host sees
A mass-storage implementation can present one or more logical units to the host. In the Linux kernel’s version 5.10 documentation, the Mass Storage Gadget is described as appearing to the host as a disk or a CD-ROM drive. Its backing storage for each logical unit can be a regular file or a block device. This is an implementation example, not a promise that all USB MSC devices behave identically.

- NEARLY 2X FASTER THAN OUR PREVIOUS GENERATION(8) – move 1,000 high-res photos in under 60 seconds(6) with up to 2000MB/s transfer speeds(2).
- IP65 RATING AND UP TO 3M DROP PROTECTION(3) – protects against spills and drops.
- POCKET-SIZED – fits easily in pockets and small bags.
- SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.
- 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.
In that Linux gadget, a CD-ROM logical unit implies read-only access. The host-visible form therefore depends on how the device is configured; “USB mass storage” alone does not tell you whether storage is writable.
What the term does not tell you
Knowing that a device uses USB MSC—or that it uses BOT—does not establish its filesystem, capacity, retail speed, practical transfer performance, or compatibility with every host. Those are separate product, implementation, and host-support details. For a particular device, check its specifications and the requirements of the computer or other host you intend to use.

Unplug storage safely
When a USB storage device is mounted by an operating system, unmount or safely eject it before disconnecting it when possible. The Linux 5.10 Mass Storage Gadget documentation warns that unplugging a USB-powered device without unmounting can cause data loss. The precise user interface differs by operating system, but the reason is the same: pending writes or filesystem activity may not have finished.

The USB-IF library lists its Mass Storage Class Specification Overview 1.4 as dated 2010-02-19, BOT 1.0 as 1999-09-30, CBI 1.1 as 2003-06-23, UFI Command Specification 1.0 as 1998-12-14, and Mass Storage Bootability Specification 1.0 as 2004-10-25. It lists UASP Bootability 1.0 with a 2013-03-04 date. These are the dates and revisions shown in the library, not a claim that each is the latest applicable specification today.
