Yes. Samsung Galaxy smartphones are powered by Android, with Samsung’s One UI interface and software experience layered on top. One UI changes how Galaxy software looks and works; it does not replace Android or turn the phone into a Samsung-only operating system.

Android is the underlying operating system on a Samsung Galaxy smartphone. Samsung adds One UI, its own interface and software experience, on top of Android. Samsung describes One UI as software unique to Samsung that operates in addition to Android.

So when someone asks whether a Galaxy phone runs Android or Samsung software, the answer is both: Android is the foundation, and One UI is Samsung’s layer over it. A Galaxy phone remains an Android phone.
Can you install One UI on another Android phone?
Not as a standalone app. Samsung designs One UI for Galaxy devices; it is not an app that can be installed on a phone made by another manufacturer. Other Android phone makers may use their own interfaces, but that does not make those interfaces One UI.

Which Android and One UI version does a Galaxy phone have?
Version numbers depend on the device and when its software was last updated. As of October 7, 2026, Samsung UK’s One UI guide identifies One UI 9.0 as based on Android 17. Samsung says One UI 9.0 debuted in July 2026 with the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Flip8, then rolled out to the Galaxy S26 series in September 2026. That is Samsung UK’s version information at that date, not confirmation that every Galaxy owner has received the update.
Samsung’s 2026 first-quarter interim report lists the Galaxy S26 series platform as Android 16 and One UI 8.5. That report reflects the platform information at the time it was prepared; it should not be combined with the later UK guide as though both describe every S26 phone’s current installed software.

How to check your Galaxy phone’s software version
- Open Settings. On your phone, go to Settings and look for About phone or Software information to view the installed software details.
- Check for an update. In Settings, open Software update or System updates, then check whether an update is available. Menu wording can differ by device.
Samsung’s US support guide points users to these settings for update checks and software details. Availability and timing can differ by model, country or region, and carrier. Samsung’s Canadian support information also notes that settings and features can vary by model, carrier, and network connection, and that supported models and schedules may change.

No. Eligibility and rollout timing are not identical across the Galaxy range. Check the support information for the specific model, and check the phone’s update settings for availability in your region and on your carrier.

Samsung announced on February 9, 2022, that select Galaxy S, Z, A, and tablet devices would receive up to four generations of One UI and Android OS upgrades. That was a commitment for selected devices, not a universal promise for every Galaxy model. A support promise should be tied to the exact device and the relevant announcement date.
