Is 5 GHz Wi-Fi Safe? What Health Guidance Actually Says

Is 5 GHz WiFi harmful? Current guidance from the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) does not find convincing or consistent evidence that ordinary Wi-Fi exposure causes adverse health effects. That is a reassuring conclusion, not proof that every radiofrequency exposure at every intensity is harmless: sufficiently strong exposure can heat tissue, while typical Wi-Fi exposure is low.

What does “5 GHz” mean?

It is a radio-frequency band used by Wi-Fi equipment, not a separate kind of ionizing radiation. UKHSA says Wi-Fi devices operate near 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz. These frequencies are part of the radiofrequency (RF) spectrum, which is non-ionizing; they do not have enough energy to ionize atoms in the way X-rays can.

“5 GHz Wi-Fi” also does not mean 5G cellular service. The names refer to different technologies, even though both use radio waves.

Can Wi-Fi from a router cause health problems?

WHO says there is no convincing scientific evidence that weak signals from wireless networks cause adverse health effects. ICNIRP’s overall evaluation finds RF exposure below the level that causes significant heating unlikely to be associated with adverse health effects. UKHSA says there is no consistent evidence of adverse health effects from Wi-Fi exposure in the general population. These conclusions concern the evidence and exposures considered in the guidance; they are not a claim that every possible RF exposure is risk-free.

The established RF effect relevant to health is heating: at sufficiently high exposure, radiofrequency energy can raise tissue temperature and potentially cause heat stress, burns or tissue damage. ICNIRP says Wi-Fi exposure is below the threshold at which body temperature is affected. Exposure guidelines are intended to protect against established effects; the existence of such limits does not mean ordinary Wi-Fi use is known to cause harm.

How much RF exposure does ordinary Wi-Fi involve?

UKHSA’s 2025 guidance gives 0.1 watt (100 milliwatts) as a typical power for both Wi-Fi user devices and routers. That is a typical equipment figure, not a guaranteed maximum for every device and not a direct measure of the energy absorbed by a person. Exposure varies with the device, how actively it transmits, distance and surroundings.

Measurements can help put exposure in context, but they are not personal health diagnoses. In a 2011 study of six primary and secondary schools, Khalid and colleagues measured an average duty factor—the proportion of time a device was transmitting—of 0.08% for 146 laptops, with a range of 0.02% to 0.91%. For seven access-point networks, the study average was 4.79%, ranging from 1.0% to 11.7%. These are results from that school sample, not universal figures for homes, routers or current devices. UKHSA’s review says the measured school exposures were small relative to ICNIRP guidelines.

A separate 2011 laboratory study by Peyman and colleagues measured integrated radiated power in particular devices: 5 to 17 mW for 15 tested laptops in the 2.45 GHz band, 1 to 16 mW for eight tested laptops in the 5 GHz band, and 3 to 29 mW for six tested 5 GHz access points. At 0.5 metres and farther, measured exposures were below ICNIRP reference levels. These historical test results describe those devices under laboratory conditions; they are not specifications for today’s routers or a prediction of an individual’s exposure.

Should you change bands, move the router or turn Wi-Fi off at night?

The reviewed health guidance does not recommend choosing one Wi-Fi band over another for health reasons. It also does not identify moving a router, switching bands or turning Wi-Fi off overnight as a necessary health measure. UKHSA says no additional communal or individual action to reduce Wi-Fi exposure is necessary.

If you prefer not to use wireless networking, you can disable Wi-Fi on a device or connect compatible equipment by Ethernet. That is a personal preference or connectivity choice, not a medically necessary precaution established by the evidence. A wired connection can be useful where it suits your setup, but it should not be treated as protection from a proven Wi-Fi hazard.

What if you feel symptoms near Wi-Fi equipment?

Symptoms that someone associates with Wi-Fi should be taken seriously as experiences, but that does not establish what caused them. WHO says reported diffuse symptoms have not been scientifically linked to electromagnetic-field exposure. If symptoms persist, worsen or concern you, discuss them with a healthcare professional, who can assess possible causes without assuming that Wi-Fi is responsible.

What do health agencies recommend?

UKHSA’s guidance, “Wi-Fi radio waves and health,” updated 19 February 2025, states: “UKHSA (UK Health Security Agency) sees no reason why Wi-Fi should not continue to be used, including in the education sector, and that no additional action is necessary communally or individually to reduce exposure further.” ICNIRP’s Wi-Fi guidance says: “A large number of studies have been undertaken on both acute and long-term effects from HF exposure, such as Wi-Fi, without showing any conclusive evidence of adverse health effects.”
