What one-click installation actually does
A one-click app is software and configuration packaged in a provider-prepared server image. DigitalOcean says its Marketplace 1-Click Apps are designed to minimize setup requirements (DigitalOcean Marketplace 1-Click Apps). The provider handles part of the initial provisioning; you should still check the app’s own instructions for what remains.

Some provider marketplaces also offer AI deployments. DigitalOcean describes 1-Click Models as a way to deploy third-party generative AI models on GPU Droplets without additional setup or configuration. That is a specific DigitalOcean offering, not a guarantee that any AI app on any host can be launched without further work (DigitalOcean Marketplace).

The available documentation does not establish a universal winner for cost, performance, reliability, or security. Those depend on the particular app, provider, and configuration.

Why a one-click AI app may still need SSH
DigitalOcean’s OpenCode 1-Click instructions illustrate the distinction: after provisioning, the user adds an SSH key, connects to the Droplet, and completes setup. The listing also documents how to configure model access and update the app. These are app-specific steps, not a universal checklist for every one-click deployment (DigitalOcean OpenCode instructions).
Before choosing an image, read its setup and maintenance instructions. Check whether it needs a model-provider key, which ports it exposes, how to update it, and whether configuration changes are made through a wizard, shell commands, or another documented method. DigitalOcean’s OpenCode listing says SSH is the only exposed port and that the app has no web interface; that detail applies to this listing, not to AI apps generally (DigitalOcean OpenCode listing).

When manual SSH installation makes sense
Manual installation is a reasonable fit if you want to choose or adjust more of the server and app configuration, and you are comfortable following the software’s installation, update, and security instructions. It also lets you work directly with the app’s documented setup rather than relying on a provider-prepared image. The trade-off is that you take on those installation and maintenance steps yourself; their exact scope varies by application.

For Droplets, DigitalOcean recommends SSH key authentication for a sudo-enabled non-root user, avoiding password-based root access, and a cloud firewall that restricts SSH. These are provider recommendations for Droplets, not a complete security review or universal instructions for other hosts; following them is not a guarantee that a server is secure (DigitalOcean: Set up a Production-Ready Droplet).

- Use the host provider’s documented access controls and firewall settings.
- Keep app credentials, including model-provider keys, configured and stored as the app’s documentation directs.
- Know how the app is updated and apply its documented maintenance steps.
- Check the app listing’s exposed ports rather than assuming another product has the same network setup.
A practical way to decide
- Choose one-click if your main priority is reducing installation work and the provider offers an image for the app you want.
- Read the app instructions before provisioning. Confirm the remaining SSH, credential, configuration, and update steps.
- Choose manual SSH installation if the prepared image does not offer the control you need and you can take responsibility for installation and maintenance.
- Apply host security practices in either case; the installation method does not replace access controls or firewall configuration.
If you are unsure, base the choice on the specific app’s documented steps and your willingness to administer the server—not on the “one-click” label alone. DigitalOcean’s OpenClaw documentation, for example, includes the question “How do I add this to an existing droplet?”; that is a product-specific setup concern, not evidence that all AI apps use the same process (DigitalOcean OpenClaw documentation).
