A long, predictable workload may qualify for a lower compute rate through a usage commitment, but the total bill also depends on the exact VM, region, operating system, network transfer, storage, and commitment terms. A capacity reservation is a separate feature: it helps ensure capacity is available, not necessarily that the rate is lower.
What “reserved” means—and what it does not
Cloud providers use different commitment products, and the word “reserved” can blur two separate goals: lowering the price of usage and ensuring compute capacity is available.
- A usage commitment can discount eligible compute usage in exchange for a term commitment. AWS offers Savings Plans and Reserved Instances; Google Cloud offers committed use discounts. Their terms and how discounts apply differ.
- A capacity reservation holds compute capacity, typically in a specified location or zone. It is not, by itself, a promise of a lower rate.
Google Cloud says a commitment provides a discounted price agreement but does not reserve capacity in a specific zone. AWS says an unused EC2 Capacity Reservation is billed at the equivalent On-Demand rate, although qualifying Savings Plans or Regional Reserved Instance discounts may apply. How the commitment options compare

AWS’s EC2 Reserved Instance page advertises savings of up to 72% against On-Demand pricing; this is a published maximum, not a forecast for a particular stream. Google Cloud lists maximum discounts of up to 37% for eligible one-year resource-based commitments and up to 55% for three-year commitments on most listed machine types, with up to 70% for listed memory-optimized types. What determines whether your stream saves money
A 24/7 encoder can make compute usage steady enough to consider a commitment, but the stream’s duration alone does not identify the cheapest plan. Compare the same workload across options, and include costs outside VM compute.
- Fix the region and VM configuration. Choose the provider region, VM family and size, operating system, and any specialized encoding capability you actually need. Rates cannot be compared meaningfully if these differ.
- Describe the video workload. Specify resolution, frame rate, codec, target bitrate, and whether the encoder must run continuously or recover from interruptions. The video profile informs the required setup, but bitrate does not set the VM price by itself.
- Compare like-for-like billing terms. Check the current On-Demand rate against the specific one- or three-year commitment, including payment terms and the rules for applying discounts to your usage.
- Add the other billed components. Account for network transfer, storage, and any separately billed services. Their cost cannot be determined without your configuration and traffic assumptions; use the provider’s current calculator and pricing pages.
- Decide whether capacity assurance is needed. If the priority is a lower rate, assess a usage commitment. If the priority is having capacity available in a specific location, check capacity reservation terms separately.
The official pricing information does not establish an all-in total for an unspecified stream. A provider’s advertised maximum discount is not a substitute for pricing your selected configuration.

Check the stream’s bandwidth and continuity requirements
YouTube’s H.264 guidance recommends a video bitrate of 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. YouTube also advises leaving 20% bandwidth headroom and says the total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth. These figures guide encoder and connection planning; they do not determine a cloud VM’s price. See YouTube encoder settings and YouTube streaming tips.
- Test the encoder and stream before relying on a long-running broadcast, then monitor stream health. YouTube’s guidance recommends both.
- Plan recovery for a network interruption or encoder-process failure; a compute discount does not keep the stream healthy by itself.
- YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a multi-day uninterrupted stream receives the same automatic archive treatment. See YouTube live streaming encoder help.
- Treat the stream key as a password: YouTube describes it as the encoder’s credential and destination information for the feed. Reset it if it is exposed. See YouTube live streaming encoder help.
A practical decision rule
Estimate the required VM and all-in usage for your actual region and stream profile, then compare the current On-Demand price with the commitment options that apply to that workload. A commitment is worth considering when usage is stable and the expected discount justifies the term; do not commit solely because the stream runs continuously. Choose capacity reservation only if you need capacity assurance, and price that separately from the usage discount.

For a DIY cloud encoder, include the ongoing work of configuring the VM and encoder, keeping the stream monitored, and handling interruptions. An always-on local computer is another possible route, but it also depends on local power, connectivity, and recovery arrangements. The right comparison is the cost and operating burden of the complete setup, not just the compute rate.
