Budget for a 24/7 YouTube playlist by separating the cost of keeping source files from the cost of broadcasting them. A managed playlist service may bundle storage, looping and recovery into a per-stream plan; a self-managed setup adds separate bills for storage, requests, delivery, CDN and a continuously running encoder. Compare those workflows at the same stream count and quality rather than treating a cloud-storage GB-month quote as the total cost.
Start with the workflow, not the storage price
“Cloud storage” can mean two different things in this job:

- Managed YouTube playlist broadcaster: upload videos to a service that stores and loops them to YouTube. The plan may include storage, streaming and recovery.
- Self-managed delivery stack: store source files in object storage and use separate software or infrastructure to retrieve, encode and send the stream. Storage is only one part of the bill.
These are not interchangeable products. A storage provider’s price per GB-month does not include a live sender, while a managed broadcaster’s subscription should not be compared as though it were raw object storage.
Measure the library and set the streaming target
Calculate how much storage you need
Add the actual sizes of the files you will upload, including alternate versions, then estimate how many gigabytes of new material you add each month. Duration alone is not enough to estimate file size: codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate and number of versions all affect it. Ask a service what counts against its quota, whether storage is pooled across streams, and what happens if you exceed the limit.

Choose output settings separately
Your source library’s total size does not determine the outgoing stream bitrate. Choose the intended resolution, frame rate and codec, then budget for the sender or service that can deliver those settings. YouTube’s recommended H.264 input bitrate for 1080p at 60 fps is 17 Mbps; its AV1/H.265 column gives 12 Mbps for the same resolution and frame rate. These are codec-specific recommendations, not a universal bitrate. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
YouTube transcodes live input into multiple formats for viewers, so the encoder’s input settings are not the same as the quality options viewers receive. YouTube recommends testing the stream and monitoring its health. Its guidance also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; if you need a single uninterrupted archive of a longer broadcast, confirm how that limit affects your recording plan. Build a budget for a self-managed setup
For a DIY stack, estimate these costs independently rather than using storage as a proxy for the total:
- Retained source storage: library size plus monthly additions, multiplied by how long you keep files.
- Requests and operations: reads and other storage actions made by the encoder or delivery system.
- Delivery or egress: data sent from storage or an origin to downstream systems, including the YouTube ingest path where applicable.
- CDN: any service used to cache and deliver media, with its own pricing and cache behavior.
- Compute and sending: the continuously running encoder, server or managed sender that fetches files and keeps the live stream going.
- Monitoring and recovery: alerting, restart handling, replacement capacity and the people or support needed to restore a failed stream.
- Archive and backup: any separate copy you need to retain beyond the playlist service or YouTube’s archive behavior.
Google Cloud recommends a CDN for content-serving and livestream workloads. Caching can improve bandwidth efficiency and performance, while request coalescing can reduce reads against the origin. Do not apply a generic object-storage rate without specifying region, retention, requests, delivery architecture and destination. The actual storage and egress bill depends on those variables; obtain a current region-specific quote from the providers you are considering.
Compare managed options by what they actually do
Align the workflow before comparing prices. A managed YouTube broadcaster sends a playlist to YouTube; object storage retains files; a managed video-delivery service may serve video to viewers. Those jobs can have different billing meters and may not substitute for one another.

Turn the estimates into a monthly budget
- Count streams: identify how many playlists must be live simultaneously. Price per stream or slot can multiply even when the media library is shared.
- Set capacity: total the files and planned monthly additions. Check whether quota is per stream or pooled, and include growth headroom.
- Set output quality: settle resolution, frame rate and codec before comparing service limits or estimating sender capacity.
- Choose a run horizon: compare costs over the actual period you expect to run the channel, including restarts, archive retention and support.
- Price every DIY meter: add storage, requests, delivery/egress, CDN, compute and recovery. For a managed service, check included storage, quality limits, duration rules and overages.
- Verify checkout details: confirm current geographic pricing, currency, taxes, billing interval and any overage charges directly with each vendor.
No published study in the reviewed sources establishes an industry-average total cost for running a 24/7 YouTube playlist. Vendor plan prices are examples of vendor terms, not a benchmark for what every channel should pay.
