There is no single reliable electricity-cost figure for a Dell OptiPlex Micro running a 24/7 YouTube stream: the model, live-encoding workload, actual wall-power draw and electricity rate all matter. Measure the computer while it runs your intended stream, then calculate annual cost as average watts × 8.76 × your electricity price per kWh. For example, a continuous 13 W draw at €0.35/kWh works out to about €39.86 a year, or €3.32 a month. That is an illustration based on a third-party estimate and assumed rate—not a measurement of your computer streaming live.

Calculate your OptiPlex Micro’s electricity cost

Use the average power draw of the complete computer at the wall while it is doing the work you plan to leave running. The calculation is:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Annual energy: average watts × 24 hours × 365 days ÷ 1,000 = average watts × 8.76 kWh per year.
  • Annual electricity cost: annual kWh × your all-in electricity price per kWh.
  • Average monthly cost: annual cost ÷ 12.

Use the rate on your electricity bill, including applicable per-kWh charges. The example below uses €0.35/kWh as an assumption reported in a third-party estimate; it is not a current or universal electricity rate.

Average draw Energy per year Cost per year at €0.35/kWh Monthly average
13 W 113.88 kWh About €39.86 About €3.32

The arithmetic is based on continuous operation for 8,760 hours a year. It does not include other equipment, such as a router or display, unless you measure and add their consumption separately.

What published OptiPlex Micro power figures can—and cannot—tell you

The available figures refer to different models and workloads. None is a direct, long-duration wall-power measurement of the unspecified OptiPlex Micro in this title encoding a live YouTube stream.

Model and source Reported condition and figure What it means for your estimate
Dell OptiPlex Micro 7010 (D15U), ENERGY STAR certification record (accessed 2026) Source Category I1: 7.7 W short idle; 1.3 W long idle; 1.3 W sleep; 0.3 W off. Certification categories, not live-stream encoding measurements. Idle, sleep and off figures should not be substituted for the draw while encoding.
OptiPlex 5080 Micro i3/8GB/256GB, Beat&Win estimate (accessed 2026) Source 13 W active estimate; 118.1 kWh/year and €41.35/year at €0.35/kWh. A third-party estimate and continuous-use calculation, not a direct 24/7 live-encoding test. The 13 W illustration above applies the formula to 13 W.
OptiPlex 7040M, U-Labs review (accessed 2026) Source About 18 W average during 1080p YouTube playback in Firefox on Linux Mint, with draw varying. Local playback on that tested setup is not the same workload as encoding and sending a live stream.
OptiPlex 7090 Micro, ServeTheHome review (accessed 2026) Source About 12–14 W idle on 120 V in the tested configuration. An idle figure for a different model and setup, not a live-stream measurement.

These numbers should not be compared as if they were measured under the same conditions. Model generation, CPU, configuration, operating state and measurement method differ. The available evidence does not establish which Micro generation would use the least power for your live-encoding workload.

Measure the actual stream workload

  1. Set up the stream you intend to run. Use the OptiPlex, operating system, encoder, codec, resolution and frame rate you expect to use around the clock.
  2. Measure the complete computer at the wall. Use a suitable wall-power meter; no particular meter model is established here. Measure the computer’s input, not a software-reported processor draw.
  3. Run representative content and settings. Include the audio and movement typical of your stream. Let the system run long enough to capture normal variation in encoding and background activity, then use a representative average rather than a brief peak or idle reading.
  4. Apply the formula. Multiply average watts by 8.76 for annual kWh, then multiply by your all-in electricity rate. Divide the annual result by 12 for an average month.

For instance, if your measured average is 20 W, the annual energy is 175.2 kWh. Multiply 175.2 by your own per-kWh rate to get the annual electricity cost; this example does not assert that a particular OptiPlex Micro will draw 20 W while encoding.

Stream settings and connection needs that affect the setup

Encoding choices determine whether the computer can produce the stream you want and how much upload bandwidth it needs. A bitrate recommendation is not a measurement of computer power consumption.

Encoder settings

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1, supports frame rates up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate encoding, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. Its current recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution and frame rate; at 1080p30, for example, it lists 14 Mbps for H.264 and 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265. Choose settings suited to your quality target and the encoder’s capabilities rather than assuming one setting fits every system. YouTube encoder settings and bitrates

YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. It also advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with representative audio and movement, and monitor stream health while live. YouTube encoder setup guidance

Upload capacity and channel eligibility

  • Leave at least 20% upload-bandwidth headroom over the total stream bitrate, as YouTube recommends. Other users and devices sharing the connection can affect reliability. YouTube streaming tips
  • Your channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days. Set up and test ahead of time, then watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators. YouTube live-streaming requirements

These setup requirements help determine whether a 24/7 stream is viable; they do not change the electricity-cost formula.

Other costs and practical trade-offs

The computer’s electricity is only one part of running a stream from home. The calculation above excludes networking equipment, any display left on, replacement or maintenance costs, and the cost of keeping your home connection available. If you want a household-total estimate, measure other equipment that must remain powered and calculate its energy separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does leaving the OptiPlex on use 8,760 hours of electricity each year?

Only if it runs continuously all year; 8,760 hours is the calculation assumption, not a guarantee of uninterrupted operation.

Will a stream at 4K necessarily cost more in electricity than one at 1080p?

Not necessarily by a known amount. The available sources do not measure comparable OptiPlex Micro configurations encoding at different resolutions, so measure your intended settings.
